Woodturning - I Think I Messed Up !!

  • In this woodturning video I turn a natural edge bowl from a Birch burl and finished it with Danish oil.. I think I'm usually pretty good at utilising a burl to its full potential, but I think I wasted to much of the burl on this piece. I got pretty much the look that I wanted to get and I do think its cool but if I had gone with some kind of vessel it would have showed off more of the burl rather than it being turned away.. what do you think ?

If you hasn't said "I think I messed up!" I would have never had the slightest doubt as to how this would come out. As I watched this be created I kept waiting for something bad to happen but it didn't. The real complexity of balance between what was there, what was removed and what was left amazes me. I like the rustic, rough edges but I'd never know where to start, where to stop or even how to start to get the balance and effect between man and nature you've achieved..

Hi Andy that's one gorgeous bowl ! If you'd done it differently you would have lost that wonderful rim and the contrast between the burl at the rim and the heartwood at the base . Yes you might have done something else as beautiful with more of the burl figure but I'd be surprised !

If you don't experiment you learn less! It's a nice looking piece even if you feel you wasted some of the burl. Maybe being able to keep as much as of bark as you did, you should consider it a compensation for the burl cut away; after all you still have a very successful finished article.
