  • Doddy has been searching for his "do it all" bike since the late 90’s - He's gone through a whole heap of them including a Giant ATX 990s; Kona Stinkys; Santa Cruz Blur 4X; Commencal Meta 4 and 5s and in recent times his beloved Nukeproof Reactor, but his latest Canyon MTB might just tick all the boxes he's been looking for, but will changing the wheels & tyres to an XC wheelset finally seal the deal for him and prove the Canyon Spectral 125 really is his dream "do it all bike"?

Try DH wheels on XC bikes and see how it handles? I'm curious if more traction is more significant than less rolling resistance especially on a punchy climbs.

Doddy, I think you just discovered the long-travel Downcountry bike. I've got a 130/130mm travel Trailbike with progressive geo. I hadn't unlocked it's full potential until I put on 2.4 rear and 2.6 front Maxxis Rekons. The combination of light fast-rolling tires, progressive geo, and slightly longer than XC travel provides for a bike that is still fairly capable on the descents but also fast on the climbs and flats. Some other bikes that might do this well would be the Specialized Stumpjumper and Rocky Mountain Element (120-130mm rear and 130-140mm front travel bikes).

Whenever I watch this channel, I feel like a 35 year old kid who just learned to ride, listening to advice far out of my field of relevance. I'm sure this is helpful to many and I appreciate the effort. That said, I prefer to optimize my riding style to the terrain I'm flying over rather than modifying my bike. After all, the rider is the most high tech and most adaptable piece of machinery in the equation.

Great video! A slightly different variation for those in the xc/light trail is to go with heavier grippier tires and a light wheel set. I recently dropped 500g in wheel weight from the stock wheels and increased tire weight by 250g, getting a lighter overall setup but with more grip. I put the new tires on the old wheels first and could notice a massive difference in grip but also noticed the extra weight. Then got the lighter wheels set up and the bike is back to being a rocket ship but now with more grip!

Now I can take this bike for longer rides (using it more like gravel etc) and just swap the wheels for DT Swiss 1900 with DHR tyres and hit the bike park next day with the same bike. Back when I was a young fella, I used to put big, heavy wheels and tires on to train with, then swap them for the the super light wheels and tires for comp day. It wasn't a perfect setup, but it did have a remarkable psychological difference on the day of the race.
Side note - You still had to train with the light tires to get used to them. A straight swap on race day was not ideal.
This may not work for a lot of folk, but it worked well for me.

One wheelset is heavier duty DT-swiss wheels with enduro ready tires, while the other set is Mavic XC wheels with nice and light low rolling resistance tires. It’s great to have the 125 to get rowdy on more regular trails. I also love it as a back country bike to do but 30 mile days out in the alpine on trails that are still pretty rough and techy. It’s a great bike to take into the alpine in the Rocky Mountains or cascades.

I'm surprised you didn't talk about rolling resistance, which there is a considerable difference in the two tires that you were running. Was more so about finding out if he felt as comfortable on the same bike with xc wheels as he did trail wheels as the goal was to find a quiver killer. And really that all comes down to personal preference. I find my quiver killer to be 140 front and rear with trail/ Enduro tires and adjustable frame flip chip !

Run XC wheels and tyres for my local fairly tame trails on my Giant Trance 29, and change to the trail wheel and tyre set up for when I ride away on more challenging terrain. The trail wheel set up does get another use though - I also have an eMTB which is set up with gravity based wheels and tyres, but if I want to do a more XC loop on it, I’ll pop the trail wheels from my Trance onto it, which makes it a much more lively ride.

Have done the same recently on my Ripley, ups are fast as hell, downs are a riot. You definitely feel less in control on the XC set up, but it has its merits. I did this for a XC race, and took 3rd. I managed to have the top times for just about all the downhill segments that day, and fairly quick times for the uphill segments as well. The more aggressive geo still allows you to push the limit, the tires just aren’t going to save you when you make a critical mistake. Going to use. Less aggressive trail tire now and see if I can split the difference.

Love this idea! I'm custom building a "downcountry" style bike this winter to see if I can come up with a "do-it-all" kind of bike. I want a very light and capable climbing bike that can also descend 80-90% of my local trails without issue. The bike will be a size XL Santa Cruz Tallboy CC MY22 (140mm/120mm travel) that'll come in at 28.3lbs. It'll have carbon 30mm internal width wheels with Maxxis Forekaster 29x2.4WT 3C Maxx Terra tires. For better grip and puncture resistance on rougher terrain I can swap the tires to something heavier like Minion DHR II's at a 180 gram penalty (both F&R). This could be a "do it all" kind of bike. We shall see. At least it will be great for climbing at that weight. I also have an enduro bike with 160/150 travel that weighs in at 33lbs (fully loaded with tools/CO2/spare tube) but its a slog when climbing. Excited to see how this new build works out.

Why not try the lighter wheels with a lightweight rear tyre, and more of a trail front tyre? More front end grip, less overall mass and middle for diddle slightly better rolling? The back might skitter more but the front would be better at staying on course. Not better necessarily but perhaps a Jack of slightly more trades?

Tried a bike similar to the one you used with maxxis trail tyres on it had great grip but apart from a bumpy downhill sectio was not faster amazed at extra grip but most of time don’t need it just slugging against the extra inertia and rolling resistance.

Thats a neat idea, why not a worn down set of off road light weight knobby tires.
Less chsnces of a puncture, deflate for good traction, there light weight since alot of tread is missing, you can air them up too roll the hard pack, doesn't matter if you burn the knobbs off since there worn out tires, and they will offer better traction then gravel tires even though there worn out. You roll just as fast with worn out knobby tires at max pressure as new gravel tires and retain alot more traction on wet terrain with worn out knobby tires/ aired down when off roading. A pile of weight savings with wron out light weight knobby tires as well. Still moderately good traction too. Just throwing out ideas. Ain't no way id run gravel/ cross country tires on my bike.
