    It's amazing how many timbres come out of that Matriarch and how orchestrally pure it sounds. It sounds like wooden clarinets, metal flute, bowed cello, warm brass... amazing sound out of analog oscillators and filters. I understand why you say your favorite thing about this synth is its sound. Agreed.

    The One is an entirely different beast of creative ambient possibilities; the Matriarch and its filters really harken back to the modular Moogs of Tomita in the 70's - they're different animals from the same zoo [have both]

    Nice video and demonstration !! I saw this Moog in another Ambient artist's studio setup and thought I'd check out other Ambient based demo's of the Matriarch. I do Ethereal Ambient, Atmospheric and SpaceMusic so this demo is right up my alley. I think I'll get this synth in the near future...definitely different sounding than everything else I currently have.

    Thanks for this video - I really appreciate your playing skill. I just bought a Matriarch - haven't even had it out of the box yet. Can't wait for the weekend!
    The thing I think you were looking for with the MonoPoly comparison is not only the 4-voice paraphony (as with DSI Pro 2 and [apparently] Arturia MicroFreak), but the available round-robin voice allocation of 4 independently-voiced oscillators. I believe the best current example of the capability is the Vermona PerFOURmer Mkii, which essentially has 4 completely separate synthesizers (osc, filter, amp and LFO) in 1 housing with available round-robin voice alloc, as well as FM and sync routings between oscillators. The Matriarch has enough going on in that vein (though with 2 shared filters, amps and LFOs) to make for compelling sonic opportunities. Cheers!

    @ConwayBob Před 4 lety

    Thank you for a great First Look, Tim. The Matriarch sings so beautifully in your capable hands. I can't help thinking of this instrument as an attractive alternative for those of us who want to make these gorgeous Moog sounds but cannot afford The One.

    • @TimShoebridge
      @TimShoebridge  Před 4 lety +1

      Bob Conway Thanks very much :) There’s definitely a huge range of applications for a 4 voice paraphonic synth, and the way the Matriarch allocates voices makes it very natural to play like a poly keyboard. While playing I sometimes find myself forgetting that this synth is not actually true polyphonic...

    There always seems to be something much more gratifying when you create a beautiful sound on an analog rather than just switching through presets on the modern digital? I’ve just been sent the summit to evaluate and while it has banks beautiful sounds, it just seems to me something that over a long period of time you might get a little bit bored with ? I have one of these Matriach’s on order, and although you say you’re just noodling, the type of sounds you are creating are exactly the type of sounds I would be looking for on this type of synthesiser. Great vid. I like how you combine the camera technics, the art in the sound and helpful infos in one video.
    I HAVE A QUESTION:
    The Dsi Pro 2 is also a beauty. I love the paraphonic mode, and still in a poly i would miss the round robin. Is there a poly except of the perfourmer and rev2 (gated sequencer) where you can treat each voice INDEPENDENT?
    In a choir, in a guitar and an organ- there are different sounding voices. In the case of the guitar its the different strings, some are thinner other are thicker. In an organ every pipe is different, in a choir there is every voice like no other. We need synths that can do that. I hope the polybrute will!!!!

    • @TimShoebridge
      @TimShoebridge  Před 4 lety

      con fuzz I never owned a Moog Model D so I don’t know how vintage the Behringer clone really sounds but I’ve never before owned a synth like it for the character of the sound it can make. I think the Matriarch is more than capable of generating that same warm creamy fuzziness that you can get from a Behringer Model D. But of course 4 VCO’s in unison can sound immense! I got to know the “boog” very well, ie. how to tweak the filter and envelope controls to get what I wanted, with the Matriarch I am really still in the learning stage and the filter is more complex being two filters in one...

In addition you can do cross modulations of the osc's so that is not only by definiton poly but also fully so. Dave Smith calls it polyphonic.
