Nothing major, but I found it interesting that in the movie poster at the end, the only two people looking directly at you (us) is Chef Slowick and Margot. The others are so self-absorbed that they are focused only on themselves. Could be a subtle wink as to why Chef Slowick wanted to kill them and why he allowed Margot to live, a hint showing the outcome in plain sight.

It seemed to me that Lillian, though facing forward, was giving the side eye to Chef Slowick while she and her minion covertly gossip about him. His hand is raised in that "Guess what I heard?" kind of way, and when someone does that, you almost always sneak a quick peek at the person being discussed.
But, your opinion about how you see it is just as valid as my mine. That's the beauty of this channel. She gives us the recap and central theme while providing a platform for us to share our thoughts as well.
So you're right, Lillian may be looking at the camera too, which would make my original comment invalid. Either way, it was still a great movie.🙂

What Erin/Margot did in the end was genius. She reminded him for a moment of his passion for cooking and his probably first job in the industry, which sparked a fleeting moment of his former love for cooking again. You can see the young, passionate chef peeking through in this whole scene (Ralph Fiennes has the most brilliant use of subtle facial expressions). She asked for food that is served on bread, which he had earlier said was food for the common man, which is why none was being served to the elite people that he had chosen to punish. That is why he gives her the price that he does; $9.95. A diner price. That reminded him that Erin was not in the target group that he wanted to have revenge against; she was just a normal person working in the service industry, like he had been. Finally, she asked for a to-go bag, something that none of the other patrons in the Hawthorne would have done. That emphasized the point that she did not belong there. Erin and Chef Sloik were the only two people in that entire room playing chess.

An emulsion is two things mixed together that don’t usually mix. IE an oil and a water. It’s hard to get those two things to mix seamlessly, hence they typically break apart. So the critic is criticizing that the Chef wasn’t able to accomplish this elite technique, and as a response he sends over a GIANT bowl of the “broken” emulsion to emphasize that no matter what you do, oil and water don’t mix. He’s calling her stupid for not getting it and the giant bowl is him trying to throw the obvious in her face. He’s saying, Even if you force the disparate ingredients together, they will eventually break apart. Because they are incapable. It mirrors his theme of the night of the divide between the guests and the kitchen staff. Chef started as a nobody, and was thrust into the elite and he suffered from severe imposter syndrome.

  • @jameslereaux5395

    Hi Liv,
Not to be critical but he said it's a broken emulsion. Emulsions are sauces that have ingredients that typically don't hold together (think oil and water) but are suspended together through manual agitation. For instance, balsamic vinaigrette is a water oil emulsion. However, i love your commentary on the rest of the video.

I loved your breakdown and critique of this movie, well done. Except for a couple of little things. One has already been brought up a few times in the comments. The other is that it seems like no one noticed the plating of the chicken was on a wrapped phone chord, which pairs again with the story he mentioned about his father.
It seemed to me that with almost every plating the chef was offering a way out: a rock, a chord, a gun dropped on the floor, a glass teapot, the opportunity to flee, sharp sticks. Their ego and self-deprecation sealed their fate.

OH GOD URE RIGHT... i think this could be another critique on how the rich expect everything to be handed to them instead of doing things themselves in exchange for money, including freedom or a chance to stay alive -- which could be why they offered to pay julian/the staff off to let them go even if they couldve easily fought their way out with the tools you mentioned.
which is also why margot ended up being able to leave, bc as a service worker, she actually did something herself instead of waiting for something to be handed to her -- a way to leave.

I liked the movie. I thought Chef gave Margo more deference because she was also in the service industry. That's one of the lines of dichotomy that I think the movie plays to. Maybe the customer is not always right. As an artist Chef has sold himself to the consumer for wealth, fame etc. and he is sick about it. His customers weren't just buying food they were buying him. He was owned. I find a quirky parallel to YT content creators. Comment sections provide some element of tension that shows in videos. What do you want to see becomes you should do it this way or that way. It is an interesting dynamic.
Another dichotomy is wealth. The wealthy use their money and influence to buy the working class but they will never be a part of them. Chef is led to believe he is a god in the food world but he really only uses that power over his workers and in his restaurant. Gordon Ramsay and company give that boot camp persona to head chefs. It's bullshit but clearly these worker are willing to die for their platoon commander. in the end Chef used that power to literally hold these people right down to the end. It's sad that he had to sacrifice himself to make those points.

I thought that maybe margo died too, in the end. At the beginning of the movie, during the tour, they stop at the smoke house in which they smoke the meat of dairy cows. Elsa explains that they age the meat for no longer than 152 days, as when served on the 153th day the bacteria would introduce itself to the consumers bloodstream and spread into their spinal membrane after which point he or she would become incapacitated and shortly therafter expire. At the end of the movie, Elsa asks for a cheeseburger, which is made with beef, the overaged dairy cow meat from the smoke house. When she´s eating the burger after she has ´escaped´, thinking she´s safe, we still hear the eerie music playing in the background and the focus of the camera slightly blurring just as she takes a bite. I interpreted this as the movie telling us she in fact isn´t safe and thus hasn´t excaped death. But maybe she did escape idk

Im not sure it's intentional or not, but I think the costuming may have had a symbolic role? Intentional or not, it sorta stands out. Spoilers, obv.
To start, most of the guests are wearing dark clothes.
--The Leibbrandts, the wealthy couple, both wear gray and blue, with the exception of Mr. Leibbrandt's tie, which has red and white stripes
--Lilian Bloom, the critic, wears a jacket that, though decorated with red, pink, and gold floral embroidery/print, is dark. Her Editor Ted's jacket is as well.
--George Diaz is in dark business atire, with a dark grey scarf. His secretary Felicity wears a black dress with white polka-dots.
--Soren, Bryce, and Dave, the stock bros, are all in darker greys, with the exception of Soren, the one who tried to break the window, whose shirt is a dark sand-tan.
--Even Doug Verrick, though somewhat underdressed, is in dark colors, his dress shirt a kind of slate blue color.
--Tyler, of course, is done up in various greys, mainly blue and burgundy, though the light sometimes makes them appear tan.
--Ms. Slowik, Julian's mother, is dressed in a blue similar to the restaurant, but brighter. Many of the floor staff, including the sommelier, are also dressed to match the restaurant.
The main group not dressed darkly are the kitchen staff, with their bright white coats. They are contrasted, however, by their black pants and grey aprons. Elsa's outfit, notably, features additional black elements, as well as frills and ruffles.
The only one fully dressed in a lighter color is Margot/Erin, in her lavender-pink dress, hidden at first under a black leather jacket.
    From what I can tell, there is an apparent dichotomy of light versus dark, where darker colors are indicative of flaws and lighter ones of virtues, following the lines of the film's satirical themes around consumer culture. Notably, darker colors seem to indicate selfish or self-serving actions, and their role as consumers. Each patron is dressed in dark colors as symbols of their consumption, each different color suggesting a different way they try to pick Slowik apart;
--Lilian's red's and pinks might mean some form of self-preservation or possibly unintentional misuse or mistreatment of their position, while her and Soren's gold/tan suggest success, wealth, power, and ambition. Lilian also features green accents as part of the floral pattern, likely idicating ego.
--The Leibbrandt's blues could suggest simply a boredness or dullness, without necessarily being bad people. Doug Verrik also sports grey and blue.
--Similarly, Ms. Slowik's outfit is predominantly a lighter blue than the Leibbrandts, with a white undershirt and light gray sweats, possibly suggesting that she may have once cared but has now given it up to booze. It is, notably, a sea-blue.
--The other stock bros are in greys, blue and grey-green, as well as the sycophantic Ted with a deep blue and burgundy plaid pattern and deep navy blue undershirt and Tyler with his burgundy jacket and slate grey dress shirt and tie, perhaps indicating a search for status in different ways: Ted, perhaps unintentionally, leeching off of Lilian's fame by feeding her ego, Tyler abusing his foreknowledge and foodie mindset to try and make friends with Slowik, and the stock bros simply looking for another wealth-person thing they, as wealth-people themselves, can say they've done, with various levels of ego, ambition, and non-chalance.
--George Diaz is dressed in almost full black, suggesting his purely selfish reasons for being there, mirroring Slowik's purely selfish reason's for killing him; Felicity's white polka-dots suggest what could be a slightly more selfless or hopeful outlook, but still very self-centered. In fact, the darker the color, the more selfish or self-serving the character's wearing them are.
The Hawthorne staff are all dressed in Slowik's black and white worldview, and are also the only ones to wear the Hawthorne-grey aprons from beginning to end, likely symbolizing the odd militant cult of personality Hawthorne displays: Slowik only dons an apron at the end, perhaps suggesting his capitulation to or revolt against his own obsession, but removes it once Margot has left. The main exception to this is Elsa, whose outfit features more frills and black colors, perhaps indicating her devotion to Slowik or some situation similar to Margot's. The colors of the restaurant themselves, a low slate sea-grey, could be emblematic of the delusion Slowik has slid into, having become trapped by the service he offers, and has enforced on his staff. It's worth noting that his obsession seems to accompany some form of this sea-grey, whether as green in the bathroom or pale yellows and blues tinged with green in the kitchen. The only part of Hawthorne that toes this line is the Silver Door, where Slowik's personal belongings are kept, seemingly symbollic of Slowik's ideal and lost passion.
Margot's outfit, by contrast, is a light pink with mauve lace. The red tones tie her thematically to Lilian via her red jacket pattern, but the lightness and shine set her apart. Although Slowik tries to bring her into his militant fold, her displacement is immediately clear: not only is her dress light and thin, it is appearance-focused, and shows a lack of brassiere-straps, speaking to her job as well as to her skillset. She is more emotionally perceptive than the kitchen staff and, though there is comradery in their shared service role, it would be impossible for her to buy their same delusion; they may share light colors, but they still have dark undertones. The color of the fabrics also sets them apart, perhaps alluding to her emotional intelligence or some other more worldy presience that allows her to appeal to Slowik by the end of the film. Though a parallel is made somewhat between Margot and Elsa, her dress is really more comparable to the silver door than any of the other outfits. It's also worth noting that she covers her dress with her _black_ leather jacket, presumably to maintain appearances.
She is also, like Slowik, marked with blood by the end, possibly also tying her to Mr Leibbrandt, a previous client of hers; however, Slowik is only marked with his own blood, while Margot is additionaly marked by Elsa's, with notably more coverage.
I can't really say anything about jewelry or other more finicky articles, but yeah. Just my thoughts.

I saw this movie in theaters and loved every morsel of it, pun VERY much intended. However, from my own experience; I saw this as more of a thriller and saw very little comically satirical elements in it. Then again, I'm not all that familiar with satire or satirical comedy; so, it's no wonder I saw such things.
More to the point, I loved all the recipes presented and Ralph Fiennes' character of Chef Slowik. He was like...like a more fiendishly intense version of Gordon Ramsey (if Ramsey were a REAL world class chef and not some hack on a stale reality TV contest.) I especially loved how he was able to call out all those rich pricks on their hypocritical personalities and lifestyles.
The movie gives a whole new level of meaning to the phrase "eat the rich," if ya catch my drift.
However...even now, after all this time; I'm left scratching my head in thoughtful confusion about the film's ending. Was Slowik insulted by Margot's request for a simple cheeseburger and fries or did he actually love being a simple fry cook more than his current position and spared her life as a token of thanks for reminding him of his love for cooking?

Plus the photo of him smiling plus the little smiles he gave show he really enjoyed that kind of cooking. How much worse would it have been for her to ask for the togo box and instead of letting her leave he told her something like "But you haven't had desert yet." IT would have been crushing but she wasn't his target and she didn't deserve to die like the rich, or want to die like him orhis staff.

I knew something was important about the previous so I was looking for that bearded chef the rest of the time. Also, what was with the crazed look from Erin/Margeaux in the end?

It's interesting how Slowick insisted that Margot needed to eat everything he was serving. She really didn't eat much of anything from the menu as far as I can recall. So I'm wondering if the food contained drugs to make the guests more susceptible to suggestion, and maybe that's why they were so docile and accepting in the end. Where as Margot didn't really eat the menu, so maybe that's what allowed her to function at a high level and come up with her plan to counter Slowick and escape.

The sauce Elsa keeps giving the food critic isn't called a "broken emotion" it's a broken _emulsion_. When you mix something water based with something oil based, you have to emulsify it to keep it from separating again. If it isn't completely emulsified and separates only a little, that's called a broken emulsion. The critic has a history of being very harsh in her reviews when a restaurant has a sauce with a broken emulsion.

So many workers and peasantry throughout history have revolted due to bread shortages etc, and the fact that the wealthy guests are unable to have it sort of references that their work doesn’t matter. They haven’t been hard working.

Just watched the movie and this video immediately after. I had fun with the film. Like, I’m one for shows like Hannibal, so food x horror is a fun combo for me. I do also wish it had waited to show its hand, but I liked watching the rich people grapple with it all… and how they’re so used to things happening FOR them that they’re incapable of switching the script, even when their lives depend on it.

    • @ShiftingFixations
      @ShiftingFixations Před rokem

Rambling time: I have yet to formulate my thoughts on the matter fully, but building off this initial take… I think they didn’t fight harder because they felt they’d used their arsenal of options. That, and they’re so bound by the “rules” of high society that they can’t let it all go. Their options list, in their minds, seemed to be:
      1) “Do you know who I am”/“I can get you fired”/“I know the owner” (the Karen approach) - you saw how they looked COMPLETELY disarmed by Elsa having the upper hand against this question.
      2) Begging/Bartering - because the first option didn’t work, they had to go to “I’ll pay you, any amount, just stop this!” And begging for their lives in other ways. Rich people tend to do a lot of “closing” (in a sales sense) and negotiating, so this is another second-nature approach to conflict resolution.
      3) Appeasement - the thought of “maybe if I follow the rules, I will stand out to Chef and I’ll be granted a pass!” Tyler’s a great show of this. Being one of the last to run during Man’s Folly, pushing for approval, etc.
      4) The Chair - slamming the chair into the glass was the only physical fight any of these guys had in them. Because the rich don’t HAVE to fight like the rest of us. They wave money around and their wish is granted. When the chair didn’t work the first time… everyone just gave up.
They only ran when they were allowed to run. In a way, I think seeing them fail to fight for themselves and these reactions is WHY the film shows its hand early. There’s also a side of them being forced to confront that they’re objectively shitty people that makes them give up sooner. Also contributes to that final acceptance of fate that is the last “yes, chef!”
Might change my opinions with time, but that’s my “saw this movie an hour ago” thoughts.”
