    Got my portable oxygen system from www.mhoxygen.com
    Today's flight I've recruited my friend once again to come along on a cross country flight to North Carolina. The mission? pick up my oxygen tank system shipped from Mountain High Oxygen. Also learn some pilotage and how to use my autopilot. The autopilot in the Sling TSi works amazingly. Once set in place, the airplane practically fly itself. As the pilot in command, just worry about looking out for traffic, and staying on top of your engine and airspace.

    There will be lots of uncertainty as you learn new things, but there's one thing you MUST do immediately... speak loudly, clearly and with confidence when on the radio. Even if you're wrong! You speak loudly to your CFI, then significantly lower your voice when you get on the radio. There's nothing more irritating to ATC than to constantly asking Pilots to restate their communication.
    You also want to minimize your communication time, especially in busy airspace. Speak loudly, quickly and get off the MIC. A good way to get better is to recite, to yourself, exactly what you need to say. Say it a couple times until it sounds right. Once you feel ready to communicate, take a deep breath, squeeze the MIC and let it fly... loudly, clearly, confidently. Remember, there's nothing wrong with learning... everyone started new at some point. Good luck and fly safely.

      I was fortunate to learn at a very busy towered field with an instructor who taught exactly what this poster says. Don’t mumble, don’t talk too fast, don’t talk too long. Repeat back instructions in the order they were given. Don’t use short call sign for your a/c until the controller does.

    Mike, there are many back seat drivers commenting who don’t know your total experience level not to mention that you are super low time in your brand new Sling TSI. As a result, that you are taking it easy and have a CFI with you as you build time, experience, and confidence is not only admirable, but appropriate. I don’t know if you are instrument rated but getting an instrument rating will help you a great deal in your radio phraseology and confidence using the radios and nav equipment. Fly safe and never let anyone intimidate you into doing what you are uncomfortable doing. Enjoy your plane and fly safely!

      As you stated... it's mostly lack of confidence. He'll get better over time, but he will need to take some initiative and seek out experience Pilots and read lots of learning material. Everyone started at the bottom, he too can work his way up. He'll have to establish a hunger for knowledge and perfection.

      I feel you. I’m comfortable with the radio call outs (thanks to some good instructors) but she needs to slow down and or she needs to enunciate. I’ve had controllers do this to me and typically what I’ve done that works s to speak clearly at normal speeds. Basically, do not respond at the same crazy speeds. Most controllers will eventually catch themselves. Now, there are some pilots that try to speak super fast too, maybe to show off, I don’t know. But they bug me too because they perpetuate the fast talking from the controllers. Note: I can tell she eventually slowed down which is good.

      @Heathfx5 Před 2 lety +1

      usually there's a small handful of things you'll expect to hear from atc when VFR, once you get used to the most common calls (cleared into xx, fly heading xx, contact zz on xx), its not that bad. most of my readbacks will be simply the heading told to fly or the runway told to land, otherwise i usually reply with wilco, roger or if I need to be really brief I'll just say the last 3 of my callsign in response, I usually avoid the "click click" as a response. My favorite way to get into a class B is to get flight following so I'm already on frequency with center or approach, often they will clear me into the bravo without me even needing to ask them. My comfort level with atc benefited a lot from training at a class D airport and always asking approach for traffic advisories in the training area. The only way to cure your "sweaty palms" when using the radio, is to use the radio more!

    When calling up for FF a good cold intro would be "Atlanta Approach N661MG VFR Request" when they say "N661MG go ahead" you would reply back "N661MG, state location, would like to pick up FF to KXXX at "cruising altitude" we are a XXX type of plane". Also, I think someone else mentioned it, saying "with you" is akin to "anyone else in the pattern say position", just bad radio etiquette. When getting a handoff to a new controller on FF or and IFR flight plan say "Atlanta Approach N661MG "then say altitude" instead of with you.
    I worked through all these little radio intricacies myself and got corrected by old timers haha, it just takes time and experience! Good job, Mike. Love your content, keep it up!

      I think it's mostly lack of confidence. You can tell by the way he lowers his voice and speak as if he's trying not to say the words (Mumbling), when communicating with ATC. Radio communication, to include listening, is a skill and his CFI needs to hold him to a higher standard. We learn by getting corrected many times, as in the Military. There are lots of publications out there on effective communication with ATC. He can also learn from other experience Pilots, such as yourself, but MUST be open to objective criticism. He'll get there... he simply have to remind himself that everyone started at some point and got better over time, with hard work and a hunger for learning.

    • @gmonnig
      @gmonnig Před 3 lety

      Definitely this. I normally don’t have a pen, or as I call it “crayon” to jot down the request. You will certainly repeat everything blurted out in one transmission. State your call sign with a VFR request. It’ll give the controller a few seconds to scan the scope to make sure it’s not someone already on frequency, or someone popping off an airfield VFR looking for an IFR clearance.

Yeah safety first,, but......... I think the best advice I can give is this.. Stop all the chit-chat in the cockpit.. Pay attention to the radio traffic.. Quickly grab a pen and write down everything ATC says.. Think about what you're going to say, before you say it.. Twice he requested clearance over the Bravo... Obviously no clearance is required OVER the Bravo, and he had no intention of flying OVER the Bravo to begin with.. Again, needs to just start thinking about what he is saying.. On a cold call to ATC, it makes no sense to say "I'm with you.." Stuff like that... I think he knows better, but the constant chit-chat and lack of focus is really making things difficult...

First - I never said that I wanted him to be or that he was my mentor, I said "I'm just learning and I try to follow what you're saying to ATC". Second - I can learn something from everyone, even if it's what not to do (not that this is the case in this instance). I am new to the idea of becoming a pilot (and to be honest talking to ATC and all that entails is a bit overwhelming to me), but I am not new to aviation. I've been working on aircraft since 1983. When I listen to someone talk to ATC or the CFI that I don't understand (in this case he wanted to be cleared through the class Bravo) so I looked up what a Class Bravo was and also Alpha, Charlie and Delta. I also looked up what Echo X-ray X-ray (or KEXX) to see where he was going. For the first time in over 10 years I am excited about learning something new and I wanted to encourage someone who took the time to share his adventure. I hope that clears things up

    Hey Mike. New pilot here (just got my ASEL back in December). Thanks for sharing. I’m curious while you were cruising you mentioned you were burning 6.8gph, but the setting was on “climb.” Is this preferred over the “cruise” setting on the blue knob? Thanks.

    • @mojogrip
      @mojogrip  Před 3 lety +4

      That is correct. I now only use the Climb setting in cruise because I realize I burn 1-2 gallons less per hour compared to the cruise setting. At climb, you get a higher RPM but you apply less power/manifold. That combination gets you better fuel economy.

    Nice video Mike. I do miss flying around North Carolina! The Sling looks like a sweet ride. Good move bringing your CFI friend. Pilot rust is real, (and frustrating) and I've been there before! Please feel free to reach out if you ever have questions and want a CFI's constructive advice. I'm happy to help. As a youtuber, I know very well the pressures that filming can add to flying, and it can be a CRAZY amount of extra pressure. I have found that filming and rust can be bad juju and leave you feeling behind the airplane and your mind stretched in too many directions. You don't owe anybody an apology if you decide you want to put the camera down for a few flights and focus on yourself and getting back up to speed--or even try filming strictly for yourself to review, with no intention of publishing a video. My two cents. Safe flying and congrats on the O2 system!!! I've been eyeing and drooling over the same system for several months now!

    Nice flight and beautiful plane. I got a chuckle out of your read back/question to your CFI “Squawk 01825?” Couple of problems there. 😜. Keep flying, keep making videos, and stay in the books. Challenge yourself and your instructor to show you where things are written. For example, traffic pattern entry and uncontrolled airport radio procedures are spelled out very clearly, in black and white, in the FAR/AIM and in FAA advisory circulars. Young CFIs, random old guys who hang around the airport, us middle age airline pilots, and worst of all, people on the internet, don’t know it all or have forgotten a thing or two. It’s best to go to the source rather than take someone’s word for it...

    Hey Mike, am enjoying the content and adore that plane but was wondering about this trip. Did you do it in one day, did you stop at all on the way over to NC? Because I watched Amy White's video yesterday crossing the country (albeit from east to west) and she stopped every 200-300 miles. Obviously she has a different plane, but is there THAT much difference in speed, fuel economy?! Cheers bud.

    This is the reason why I'm taking Sport Pilot training. I don't want to talk to the ATC. I would rather talk plane to plane, and land at nontowered airports, or like other pilots would say, uncontrolled airports. I believe there are 20,000 nontowered airports in the USA, as opposed to 500 towered. Fly in E and G airspace, up to 10,000 MSL or 2,000 feet above ground level. Daytime flying only, VFR and one passenger. Now if you want the advanced perks, you have to get the appropriate training and endorsements.
