  • What happens when a coworker knows you love trains, and his dad is selling an RS3L? You end up setting foot into the hobby of horn collecting! Here is my first horn, an ex-Santa Fe RS3L! I ran this horn on about 23 gallons of air at 140PSI with half inch air lines. She sure sounds great, and it was mighty fun waking up Joshua Tree with the voice of the Santa Fe. I'm not sure what type of loco this horn came off of, but I have found traces of silver paint on it, so my best guesses would be that it came off of either a warbonnet Dash-8 of some sort, an early Dash-9, or maybe one of the Super Fleet FP45s (How cool would that be!). Being an RS horn, that means it would have been made after 1979. My guess is that it was made in the mid to late 1990s. However, if anybody can give me a better idea as to when this horn was made, feel free to let me know. Enjoy the voice of the ATSF! A sound that was once so common here in the southwest. Please rate and comment, Thanx! :-)

When I was growing up, I had a neighbor who worked at the San Bernardino shops, and he took a horn off of a U33C for me. I have it installed in my Kenworth now.

Thanks, Mike! Yeah, I was thrilled to get ahold of this horn. I agree, sounds pretty good for having been mounted under an RV for many years!

The sound of the Santa Fe. I grew up on the El Paso sub...you even put some cord flare into it, like the local engineers in GP-3(0,5,8-2,9-2)'s back in the day 😅

Yeah I am, LOL! I'd love to put it and my giant air supply on my car, if I could figure out how too. Haha! I will say though, it is possible, and other people have done it.

this was the sound of a generation. i miss how trains used to sound like this. most noteably the transfer train scenes in downtown areas used to sound like this till recently.

Thanks Ron! I got a good deal on the horn so I jumped on it. I never impulse-buy anything, but the price for this and a lot of the hardware for it was just to good to pass up.

On the manifold look at the base of it, usually it'll have the last 2 numbers of a year to give you an idea of its age. As long as it isn't a parts horn.
