  • A WABCO. Model E2-B1 3 chime. An early chime which is not likely to be seen anymore. I remember them on some first generation PRR. diesel's, and the 1950's experimental electric's. This one is from my collection.

    Nice! I can hear the E2 "honker" part of the horn. Overall this sounds similar to some of the marine vessels I've heard in the past.

    I like the sound of that horn!! I remember that the PRR used these onsome of their locomotives. Also in Duluth Mn their vertical lift bridge at the entrance to Duluth harbor has the E2B1 horns on it but it sounds like the large bell is not sounding.

    I just had to comment on this one. Normally I would prefer to hear the sounds of the mechanicals--prime mover, etc. rather than the horns. BUT I couldn't get enough of this horn!
    If I heard that coming at me, I'd certainly be paying it some attention!
    What a great catch!

    Was in New Ringold Pa yesterday 3-18-12 on other business, heard the E2-B1 and recalled your video at once. Looked like the same unit, sounded like a SD-50 or -60 turbine whine. There is about 20 grade and ped crossings in a congested ±1200ft stretch, plenty of whistle and bell in there. Really commands attention, amazing to hear it's echo through the valley and from hills very far off. People walking around didn't even blink. Crew was spotting cars for anthracite loads about 1300hrs. Best ~ CW

    Wow Ed, Ever since I heard your video I just couldn't get that sweet powerful sound out of my head. I wanted to buy one for myself until I realized that the price was out of reach for me. I did the next best thing and created my own and I hope to have it posted on the H&W board sometime next week. I bought an all aluminum E2 and two K1L Nathans and built my own manifold. I retuned one of the K1L's to blow 210hz (A flat), the other K1L already blew 255hz. (C flat) The E2 blows 156hz (E flat).

    • @leehuff2330
      @leehuff2330 Před 6 lety +2

      Nicholas Kung
      Precisely what it's for. If you noticed that the engineer sounded 2 short blasts before moving, he was warning anyone around that the train was going to move.
      The standard grade crossing warning is 2 long blasts, a short blast, and a long blast which is held as the lead locomotive enters the crossing. Back in the old days, the engineer could also signal for the hand brakes to be applied or released by signaling with the steam whistle, the predecessor of the modern air horn.
