About Cecilia:
Cecilia Blomdahl is originally from Sweden and moved to Svalbard 6.5 years ago. She works as a photographer and videographer in Longyearbyen, and with her social media channels. Check her out on tiktok and instagram under her handle @sejsejlija! Here on youtube she posts videos about her daily life in her cabin with her boyfriend Christoffer and her dog Grim, living just outside of Longyearbyen. Christoffers Fishcake recipe:
1600g fish (50/50 cod and haddock)
8dl cream and milk (half of each)
20g salt
Approx 0.6dl flour (originally potato but plain flour works as well)
Mix it all and pan sear! Enjoy âĄ
I love fresh fish. Now I'm hungry đ
I live in Georgia, USA, and when we go fishing it's nothing like your fishing. Anyway, we love to fish at the lake and then fry them up and enjoy. I absolutely love the ocean and seeing the whales, they're beautiful đ
Thank you, I will try it. It looked delicious.
Thank you for the recipe! This is awesome! Need to try this!
They look sooooooooo good!
Thank you for sharing this!
Iâm from Alaska, USA and living off the land is a huge part of our life. We hung, fish and forage for berries and mushrooms. Our freezer is full of salmon and caribou, even a little moose we got from a friend. Beekeeping for honey and gardening are also popular but just not my thing. We use every part of the animal and treat it very respectfully when we harvest it.
Is a very responsible fishing, smaller fishes are released, the quantity is only what is necessary to pass the winter and has a positive impact on the environment as you rely less from food coming mainland.
Here in the U.S., states set regulations as to what species can be caught along with a minimum size that can be kept. It's all part of managing the fisheries.
Watching Ceciliaâs videos always make me want to move to Svalbard. I keep having to remind myself that 1) Iâm not outdoorsy, 2) I donât like being cold, and 3) I get hardcore SAD. Now I can add reason 4 why not everyone should live on Svalbard: Iâm allergic to fish.
You just need the right company to not mind the cold and not get hardcore sad. đ
@@alejandromacias7609 no, the SAD was capitalized for a reason. people don't counteract seasons for us. thank you.
For those of us with reverse SAD, it would be ideal. Except that I'm 67 and disabled.. lol
I believe we would all love to see more of Christopher, boating, fishing and his cooking skills. Does Grim get to enjoy the fish?
Absolutely!
I think he has a cooking channel? I'm not sure.
@@gwynnmccallan8856 He's really camera-shy, so I doubt it. Maybe you're thinking of one of the videos on this channel where he prepares a meal, cooking channel-style?
Become a patron ... he has cooking segments there.
I'm jealous and envious, I wish I could be there
I have been binge watching all of your videos Cecilia (found your channel recently) and it has been amazing. Your lifestyle is such a diffrent from mine (I commute for three hours every day) and rignt now I stare at a big boring skyscraper while eating my tasteless take away lunch in a tiny, way to expensive, apartment. Thanks for letting me, and your other viewers, have a glimpse of the GOOD life. The scenery is amazing at Svalbard (especially the view from your living room) and I have become a big fan of Grim who must be strong contender for the 'happiest dog alive' award.

You Need to START LIVING and STOP EXISTING!! Get the Hell Out of that Over Polluted, Over Crowded, Dirt and Smog Breathing Rat Hole You Live In. Make a LIFE CHANGE Back to Nature. @@gailcurl8663 have you taken your own advice?
@@gailcurl8663 Great advice!
@@juliesterkel1248 I would think she probably has......
I absolutely love watching your videos. You and Christoffer truly are blessed with living away from this rat race we are stuck in in America. Thank you for your efforts to teach us your culture on Svalbard and the beauty you portray in your videography.
I love the whales; I once went on a trip off the Coast of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, and we saw hundreds of whales, as far as you could see all directions, I burst into tears when one jumped up right beside our boat, close enough to reach out and touch it felt, so moved by the experience. Christoffer is one of those natural chefs, so relaxing to watch him. Have a beautiful week in Svalbard!
That must have been amazing! I would have been emotional too. Heck I was tearing up at the whales on this video! â€ïž đ đ đł
We love whale watches. They are amazing and come right up to you. I live here.
@@acp8760 How wonderful!
Such an interesting video again, Cecilia! I was wondering if the island could produce more food if they had their own greenhouses? In Iceland they also have plenty of them.
Actually, they could start micro farms. Inside with UV ligths, can produce a lot of vegetables. Problem is, not sure how it works legally to transport dirt there.
but in Iceland they have energy from Volcanos or like hot springs so I donât think itâs sustainable on Svalbard you donât even have light in winter in the arctic
Former Arctic farmer in Longyearbyen, there is very little incentive on the island for these microfarms. We grew microgreens and herbs (tried other crops too) but it was still cheaper to buy from the mainland, so local businesses are not incentivised to support it. With the current legislation it would be nearly impossible, hopefully a large company such as Hurtigruten can start the conversation again since they are most likely to succeed and be within the governments interests.
@@allie1313 Iâve always wondered this exact thing, thank you for this response.
@@mareike2802 I know, I lived there before. But there are more ways to produce clean energy, from windmills, water movement, etc. But maybe it's harder because Svalbard has a low population. I saw that the university in Svalbard is doing research about geothermal energy, so maybe there are more possibilities in the future.
What an adventure today! Iâm a vegan, but can appreciate sourcing your own food locally. And Christoffer does a wonderful job cooking. Extra kudos for the shot you got near the end of the boat trip of the mountain reflected in Christofferâs image!
Fellow vegan here! I donât like hunting or fishing but itâs certainly preferable to getting fish and meat from supermarkets and what happens to the animals before they get there.
tbh i dont think its realistic being a vegan when u live in a place so remote
@@todayiglowup4286 I would find a way. As you can see from Ceilia's videos they have oatly (oat milk) there in the supermarket so they probably have a whole host of other vegan products as well.
I have seen reviews from other vegan travellers on Happy Cow (app for vegan restaurants) that the restaurant in Svalbard will customise the curry for you to make it vegan so you can even eat out there.
This isn't a comment about converting anyone to veganism, just saying what I would do. I wouldn't live in Svalbard as they don't allow cats and my cats are my family members, but I could do Tromso.
TBH I've been to places in England (my country) that don't even have any plant milk - Longyearbyen seems better stocked up than that!
Oh my gosh, the drone shots of the whales & the water were so beautiful! You live in such a gorgeous area, thank you for sharing your life with usâ€ïž
I've to say, watching your videos is pure relaxation for me đ I stop everything that I'm doing and just watch.. I LOVE your videos! â€ïž
đ„°đ„°đ„°đ„°
Those flowers look like little Dr Seuss trees đ! I definitely want to know more about the little bit of flora there is on the island! đ đ±
Iâm sure youâre referring to the genus Truffulus, in the book Truffulus seussiensisâŠ..
The are used to make a thneed. And a thneed is something that everyone needs.
That food looks so delish, OMG! Christopher seems to be an amazing cook. I love your videos, you guys are meant for each other. Thanks for sharing. A big hug from Brazil!
I love watching your videos while I take a break for coffee but have never commented before. This was such an outstanding video. I love how simple your life is, and how you both enjoy every moment of what the place you call home brings you.
Aww thank you so so much! đ
I love eating fresh fish! I grew up near the ocean in many different places so fishing was part of life. Christofferâs cooking makes me so hungry! Looks delicious. And as always your photography skills make everything look even more enticing,Cecelia!
Same here. The big difference to me is to see that beautiful clean, clear and icy cold water to fish in⊠wow.
The dish up that far can hardly have any diseases right? Iâm thinking similar to Ciguatera which is common is warmer water.
Interesting also to see their set up, using winches. I inky use winches for cray pots because theyâre so heavy. Always in a rid and feel otherwise because we donât get those massive fish (we fish for black and blue Marlins however thatâs a sport only and theyâre all released.
Surely they have automatic winches to use to drag up the bigger fish, like what the neighboring boat caught?? Or do they âjustâ winch them up using their own muscles?? Or gaff them?? Looks so easy to drop a fish otherwise.
Are the boats layouts like that because of the danger of polar bears suddenly coming onboard? It doesnât look like the easiest way to fish, and also a risk of getting lines caught around the props.
Would be so cool if Christopher had a fishing / cooking channel (unless Cecilia is interested in it).
Thank you so much for taking us fishing with you. I love to see the different types of fish that people can catch in the different parts of the world. And let's hope it never comes to not being able to get food shipped in. Be well, stay safe, catch lots of fish, love from Texas.
I love that after years of living there you still get excited by the views around the island đ
I'm surprised no one is growing leafy greens indoors or anything hydroponically. LED grow light in a grow tent can get you a lot of produce. could help supplement the fish and provide a complete nutrient profile more locally. I love Cod, Haddock, and Pollock so I would be happy eating it year round.
Vertical farming for veggies would work there!!!
I once saw.a video, somebody actually tried, but it wasn't sustainable.
@@wmf831 , can you find a link to that video.? I would like to see the problems they encountered. It must require a high energy generating infrastructure.
@@wmf831 not true
Where does the energy to power the LEDs come from?

Hi Cecilia, I discovered your channel a few weeks ago and can't stop watching! I love the beautiful nature and your wonderful outlook on life. Thank you Cecilia for the amazing views and your joyous spirit not to mention the wonderful Cristofer who is just such a calm and chill person and the excited Grimm and loving Fenris.
It is nice to hear from Christopher. It took me a few views to appreciate your channel. The combination of music, photography and daily living is very relaxing to view on a Sunday. Thank you.

I am new to your channel and I love it. It is absolutely fascinating to see how you live and being invited into your life like friends visiting and sharing your adventures. Originating from South Arica , I cannot get enough of the landscape and how you adapt to make it work. Whale watching is a favorite pastime for us living on this island in SE Alaska. đ„° I never get tired of it. It is especially exciting in the Spring during the herring run. The waters here are teeming with life!
I'm a newer subscriber but have been watching your catalog quite a bit. This is one of my favorites so far. Your drone footage above the whale pod was very enjoyable. Thank you for a neat channel!
A great 'catch and cook' video guys. As a keen fisherman, really enjoyed. Thank you.
The quality of your videos and the drone shots are OUT OF THIS WORLD!!!!!! Thank you for sharing it with us
Awww thank you!
It would be cool if someone in Svalbard set up several large greenhouses and brought in a large amount of soil. Svalbard could start composting to add to the soil. During the spring, summer, and early fall you could grow a lot of vegetables right there.
I too was wondering why no one there does that.
I think it would be huge disruption in natural tundra
Do it in one of those crazy abandoned Russian towns
Absolutely great video! Love the fishing ("This isn't a big fish" - yes it bloody is :P) and what a day to be out, lovely and calm
My thoughts exactly. I'm thinking that fish is huge! đ€ŠđŒââïžđ (Compared to fish I catch in CA)
Thanks for sharing your day fishing and cooking. Really enjoyed it! Here in Newfoundland we are living on an island serviced by marine and air only. You are much better prepared than we are. While we do grow and farm the land we do rely heavily on marine and trucks to bring goods in and we would certainly not have a 3 month supply as you do!!
