    For crop sensors like MFT you can get focal reducers with a lens in the adapter that squeezes the image onto the sensor and removes crop factor. You get the original focal length plus an extra f stop.

    I own a Helios 44-2 and I can confirm that it is a great lens! I picked mine up for £20 and paid and additional £10 for an adapter. Great price for a 50mm prime setup. The manual focusing on this lens is so nice and I have used it for various projects. Id really recommend getting on of these as for the price, you cant go wrong.

      @NetTubeUser Před 2 lety

      I also have a Helios 44-2. The Helios 44 is also great, but it's more blurry or soft. And, of course, the swirly bokeh and the background are great!

    Awesome video I've got a Fuji x10, which I've bought an adapter and super wide and telephoto converter lenses for. I've never thought I could buy vintage lenses, but as they are screw fit I guess that they would fit straight on the 52mm adapter ring.

    • @ronhonhola
      @ronhonhola Před 4 lety

      Nooo way! Fuji X10 has a fixed zoom lens, and a tiny tiny sensor. It's a point a shoot on steroids basically (great camera thought)
      You can't adapt any lens, since it's own lens is fixed. And because of the small sensor, a 50mm vintage lens would become something like 170mm. (If it was by any chance possible).
      Just buy an xe1,or any other removable lens X series camera. They're can be found for 150-200 euros. Plus a 40 euros lens/adapter combo and Voila

    Great list I have a few of these lenses. I’m in two minds about my Jupiter 12 so I bought a 7artisans modern Russian replica style. Was extremely disappointed it was so badly made didn’t fit my fuji mount so I’m back to my Jupiter 12 getting a close focus helicoid to extend the function and usability.

    I have that Helios lens and it's wonderful, but the focusing issue you mentioned in the text on your video is a huge problem on my D5200; it doesn't just struggle at infinity, but at a few metres range too. The bokeh is really neat though and behaves unlike any lens I've used before; it doesn't just blur, it behaves a little like a kaleidescope.

  • @SudoTech

  • @jb678901
    @jb678901 Před 6 lety

    Not really magnification, is it? More like a crop. The MFT sensor is 1/4 the size of the full frame so it is only capturing the middle of the image projected by the lens onto the sensor. The rest of the light and image information is lost as it is outside the border of the MFT sensor. A focal reducer compresses the lens image projection so that less of the image information is lost, reducing the amount of crop from 2 to approx. 1.45, making it act very close to that of the APSC sensor crop. A MFT sensor has a much higher concetration of pixel bins than an average full or even APSC sensor. So it can take advatnage of the focal reducer project image information.

  • @EdHunter55
    @EdHunter55 Před 5 lety

    a 50mm always remains a 50mm regardless of sensor size(you'd have to fisically allter the internals of the lens to change that). The only thing that happens is that part of the image the 50mm creates falls outside your crop sensor(So the image gets cropped)
    So it stays 50mm but the view angle becomes more comparable with a higher mm lens.

    Hi.
    I do not think that suggesting to buy a Jupiter-8M (i.e. the version for Contax RF) for 10$ is a good idea, when you have to buy an adapter with helicoid for about 400$ to mount and be able to focus manually this lens on your mirrorless camera...The simple alternative, a Jupiter-8 for M39, solves the problem for 15-20$

I don't see why they can't do this and make all the buttons work with simple modifications and clever design. There are so many great old cameras that could regain their usefulness.

    One thing that we must keep in mind is that most of these old lenses made in the USSR were, where in fact, copied from the German's Carl Zeiss lenses after world war 2. Not all of them, but many of them. So, back then, the USSR didn't create all their lenses from scratch but copied them, which is sad, but yeah.

    One way to minimize the huge crop on Mirco 4/3rds cameras like the GH4/GH5 is to use a focal reducer. Mitikon makes an excellent one that works with these old screw mount lenses. You also get the bonus of an extra stop of light when you use it. www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1218445-REG/mitakon_zhongyi_mtkltm2m42m43_m42_lens_to_micro.html

    I appreciate that you are trying to spread the good word here but you are spreading a lot of miss information. Lenses generally get softer the more open they get "f2". Also the reason you would get some of these lenses is not because they are cheap. It would be because they are fantastic quality lenses at any price. Not all things are about how sharp it is and how much contrast it produces. In almost all cases I would take a Helios or a Jupiter over a Samyang. Just take a look at this page www.flickr.com/search/?text=jupiter%203
    That lens is the Jupiter 3 the cheapest lens I own. It is capable of some of the best pictures I have ever taken and I own lenses that cost with no exaggeration 60 times as much! Stop making excuses go buy a canon 5D for $400 Or a 5D Mark II for $600 and spend $300 on some Russian Primes (Jupiter 37AM, Helios 44M4, the best 35mm that is cheap at the time, and a set of M42 macro tubes) then go take a hundred thousand photos.

    The Russians saw the factory and took the tools? Not strictly true. The Russians were allowed to take the factory/machinery by agreement as a contribution for reparations after the war had ended. I am in the UK...... Don't forget the Russians, along with the US were our allies during the war. Aside from that, I have an old (1974) broken Zorki 4 camera with a good 50mm Jupiter 8 lens. Having adapted it to my Olympus MFT cameras, making it a 100mm lens, it makes an excellent lens it for portraits. With the renewed interest, these lenses are going up in price.

      if speak, then speak correctly. These are not Ukrainian lenses either. These are Soviet lenses! It's just that the plant was built on the territory of ukraine. In Soviet times, no one paid attention to the borders, they built factories where it was more convenient
