  • I cannot believe how long I’ve been working on these ✨ FREE ✨Merton Gershun for American of Martinsville Bali hai nightstands. The amount of time, supplies and STRESS is crazy! Not the smartest business decision to keep working on these but… I’m determined 🤣
    Here’s how I did it! 👇🏼
    + stripped using stripper
+ used carbide scraper and wire brush to remove the paint with the help of some lacquer thinner
+ used kwikwook epoxy putty for veneer repairs
+ used @realmilkpaintco oxalic acid to remove water stains
+ sanded with 120 grit using my and (Use code FURNITUREDR10 for 10% off!) and
+ applied oil based pre conditioner
    + applied walnut gel stain
Now.. I know I was wrong to even try a dark stain on blonde mahogany but ya girl was desperate. So PLEASEESEE give me all your ideas on how to fix this!

When the wood is this badly stained i usually spray it with diluted white lacquer as a base to hide all the dark stains and then brush stain the gel coat without wiping with a rag. You have to work fast and use light coat of gel stain trying to spread it evenly not leaving to much stain on the surface. It basically like glazing but instead using a clear sealer i use white lacquer . I dont know if any other painters do it like this but Id practice and test this method out on another piece of wood first to get the hang of it. So diluted white lacquer followed by stain and then clear top coat. The white lacquer goes on semi transparent so that some of the wood grain still shows and kinda hides the dark stains. Hope this method helps. Keep up the great work love your videos❤👍

Maybe try an ebony stain? I would avoid gel since it can get trapped in those flutes, and go with a regular oil based stain. You can also try and blend those dark stains buy doing a light coat of oil stain around the dark areas and then feather the stain towards them before a 2nd coat to even it all out. Before the stain cures you should be able to blend certain areas together.

Hey. I do cabinetry and millwork, but I have to mess around with old furniture here and there. I use a very soft wire brush than I can put into a drill chuck for stuff like those fluted drawer fronts. It’s tough enough to remove paint after the stripper works and soft enough to safely use on hardwood veneer. It’s definitely something worth looking into. I don’t use it everyday, but every time I need it I’m glad I have it.

So far so good. It's not over, just keep going. Finish it. See what else you have in the house and harmonize with it.
(You can make the precision instruments yourself ).
If it's insects, put onion juice in the holes with a syringe (ecological) or insecticide and then necessarily clog to close the pores. Then paint dot by dot carefully in gold or another color you like. Then frame everything in a thin gold or linen border only at the top and bottom of the furniture. (Or glue green rhinestones). You have many solutions.
    Play, imagine, have fun!

I used to refinish furniture but stopped to care for my husband. Thinking about starting back up. One of the things I always kept was a 1in sponge with a good sander layer on it as well as a pointed blade with 2 wings on it. Both would have made the drawer fronts a whole lot easier. The blade should be available at an old fashioned hardware store that sales antique hand tools. The sponges can be had from any big box home improvement store (maybe the blade, too, mine was from the 1930’s or 40’s. Just and fyi. The blades are great for getting into router details. Calligraphy nibs with wide wings are also useful but you want to avoid gouging the wood. Wrapping a rag around it will soften it somewhat. The sponges work wonders getting into carved details but try to get the strongest one they have. The dollar sponges with sandpaper (maybe $2 with inflation) are not as stiff and will crumble or flatten with the paint stripper chemicals making them useless well before the job is done. Just an fyi.

180 grit isn't high enough.... I would say this, avoid gel stains altogether. I had an issue some time ago with a double Red Oak bookshelf that I built for two clients and it was not what I was expecting... I have had very good results in the past but something must have happened in the last 7-10 years to gel stains... they are extremely poor in quality.
Also, it really helps to know what kind of wood you're working with. Some woods are prone to "blotching" when you stain them... Cherry, Maple, and Pine are the greatest offenders in the blotching category... It really helps to use a wood conditioner like Charles Niel's Pre-Color wood conditioner... I used it on an awesome, large, mobile kitchen island I built and the top turned out fantastic.. No blotching. Strongly recommend this product... don't bother with anti-blotching/wood conditioners from Lowes or Home Depot... Charles Neil's is sincerely the best.

Good research for supplies and techniques. The uneven stain might be lightened by use of household bleach. But test always on sample. Perhaps brushing on paint thinner to thin stain or acetone for stronger action with rags to soak up? Good effort. Gotta go through the mistakes to get a better skill. Perhaps reading old finishing/restoration books and articles? Old issues of Fine Woodworking magazine.

How do u know they are decorative worm holes and not active wood worms?

You could do a lighter stain or paint them black

You need to learn about tinting! It will take your refinishing work to whole new level! Spraying tints changed my refinishing life! No blotching, just as durable, any color, any wood, and very simple!

There is a type of asian design that mends broken pottery with gold.... you could spot paint the holes with gold to work with not against the flaws!! Good luck ❤

@@thefurnituredoctor I’ve done this with a small saucer that I had. For pottery it’s called Kintsugi or kintsukuroi (golden repair). It’s based on the principle that some things are even more beautiful for having been broken. I could easily see it lending itself to your piece. Possibly something similar to gold leaf for the decorated parts. As for the stained top. Possibly refinishing again to bring everything up to the blond of the original piece, then top the pieces with mirror, possibly with a gold fleck or somesuch. There are kits available and some wood crafting info on CZcams

Would Soda blasting work for you. It's supposed to take paint off cars without damaging rubber or plastic trim so maybe it would be good for wood

The dark stains were not that bad and actually look like they’d work with a bamboo type stain for the finish.

Try leaving it in the sun in spurts, it will wash the stain lighter and youll have a nice look imo

I actually really like it! They remind me of deer spots. They would look great in a setting with alot of greenery

Try using a brass vegetable brush on the decorative areas.

Actually, the holes give them character! Not bad at all!

You always do a great job. The only thing is that I wonder about is the ethics of taking free items in good repair. Do you have a time a period ypu wait before taking them so people in need have a chance at them or is it every person for themselves?
