  • Have you wished you trusty old MagLite was a super powered flashlight? Adventure Sport Flashlights makes the brightest Maglites ever with a high tech mod process.
    If you thought Maglites weren’t bright anymore what if I told you a guy named Matt from a company called Adventure Sport Flashlights decided to take standard Maglites and make them as bright as possible? You probably never thought a Maglite could pump out nearly 5000 lumens, but this review of Matts awesome Maglites, using his custom Maglite Superbulb will prove Maglits are still the best, or whatever. But if you already have a Maglite, these bulbs will drop right in many current Maglites. So if you’d like to supercharge your Maglite and modify it for Maximum brightness- check out Adventure Sport Flashlights website. Using the coupon code: knifebro6

  • @RV-ardvark
    @RV-ardvark Před 7 lety +3

    I'm impressed. The modified Maglite performed very well. My sentiments mirrored your exactly, regarding Maglite failing to keep up with flashlight technology. The only concern I have with the modified Maglite is the heat dissipation and output reduction. I understand the thermal limitations for output vs. component life, but competitors with dedicated designs can keep the high output levels longer because of heatsinks designed into the flashlight casing. If Adventure Sport Flashlights can dissipate more heat by having a better thermal connection with the Maglite body, it would make a good product great. The throw of the modified Maglite is outstanding, in my opinion. There appeared to be an uniform spread of light in its throw. I prefer a floody light over a spot light for most applications. Thanks for the good review.

    • @AdvancedKnifeBro
      @AdvancedKnifeBro  Před 7 lety +2

      Well... I have found in all of my testing and all of my reviews- all the big guys have timed or thermal step downs at just a few minutes in. This Maglite performs no worse than say an Acebeam or Olight. It heats up quick... my Acebeam X45 gets almost too hot in 3 minutes. These lights can run with the best... and his drop in modules are a thick chunk of metal. Check out his video at the end. You can also set the thermal regulation to get hotter. Matt said he's let them run for 15 minutes before without issue- but that's too hot to hold. I'd estimate I only let the light get to about 100 degrees before I put in the timer.

    Magite did eventually come up with an LED D-maglite, and the led bulbs were dying like flies. Also they gave us that evil T8 torx set screw, so that we have to file down a torx screwdriver. And then the led assembly is proprietary and a different shape from the old one and from all the upgrades.

    I have a question. I have a 3D cell maglite. At present it has the standard LED upgrade everyone puts in their lights at first which is a pitiful 120 lumen (roughly) and it puts out a fairly crappy dim yellow light. What is the most powerful, reasonably priced LED upgrade I can stick in it where I’ll still be able to use D cells. Any help and amazon/eBay links with where to buy would be greatly appreciated.

    • @AdvancedKnifeBro
      @AdvancedKnifeBro  Před 5 lety

      That's a tough one. I bought an old LED drop in years ago, and it sucked. I know this is a cop out, but if I were you I'd consider keep the old maglite for nostalgia and less for use. The LED upgrade I bought a few years ago was $20, and it was ugly. My advice is to keep it incandescent, and maybe buy something small from the Emisar line, as a main light.

    Got a question about 18650 lithium ion batteries. Recently got a couple Taklite TA-50s (1080 lumen edc) and they use a single 18650 each. My question is simple: can you inadvertently shorten the battery's performance if you charge it when it's at let's say 30-40%? Or should you almost fully deplete it (10-20%) before charging?

Just remember it’s a very floody dispersed light. Most of my lights that pump out this much have more candela... It’s not for long distances but a lot of light close. I actually use it as a supplemental light I. My videos occasionally because of its floody nature.

I will say that the optics do a good job of focusing such a small amount of light into an impressive spot, but they are definitely tragically behind the times. It's a shame, It's the 7th maglite that I own and it definitely has its uses, but a $3 eBay light can just destroy it at everything except bludgeoning.

      It’s a camera thing. The black magic doesn’t have a good IR filter so in daylight in some of the blacks you get reds or browns. I usually fix it in color correction but not this time. You’re the first person to notice it. It’s especially apparent in the black maglite

    • @AdvancedKnifeBro
      @AdvancedKnifeBro  Před 7 lety +2

      Honestly... I don't have any floody big lumen lights like the 2D... it really helps to make it useful. Most of my light useage is in my backyard and smaller... and it's perfect for that. It's even, with a nice tint, and has very little of a hotspot. But I agree that maybe he could make a less floody option for people who don't want it. But that said... the 2D is a true flooder. After seeing this beam with the lumens... I can't call my Meteor or X7 flooders anymore.

      That's why I bought one here in Australia, you cannot carry anything for the express purpose of self defence.. but if it happens to be night, and I just happen to have a large flash light which I totally am not using to defend myself, and I happen to be attacked, well that's just all coincidence.

      I used to carry a 6 cell so I didn’t have to carry my night stick all the time. Served both purposes and sitting on my shoulder conveyed the message so I never had to whack anyone with it. Later working as as CO I carried a 5 C cell mag light. It would slide right into the front of my pants with the fat head keeping it there. Far better than those nasty plastic 2D that the government furnished. Definitely a no no to whack ant inmate with but since we didn’t carry nightsticks it served as a last ditch weapon if some nut decided to attack me. I never had to use that either except for the night time counts.

      Are they really ? I've been using Maglites for over 25 years. Couple years back I began search for a more "modern" and up to date technology. I was surprise that the more powerful 2-AA Mag was about 250+ lumens, and there was a lot of brands offering 500+ Lumens under $15. So I decided and try a couple of them. In one of the test it was the Mag vs other with 18650 battery and 500+ lumens. For my surprise at various distance you can see the 500+ was a little bit more intense, but too little to make a difference. I still have a few others, but my go to is the 262 lumens 2-AA MAg

    • @carlosmatos9848
      @carlosmatos9848 Před 4 lety

      @@happycamper9300 Yeah for most people 250 to 500 lumens is enough for most tasks, but there are several single 18650 LED flashlights that will blow the doors off a Maglite, like the Lumintop FW3A or Emisar D4. They'll do upwards of 3000 to 4000 lumens, at least until it burns your hand, a hole in your pocket, or the thermal mode kicks in, lol.

      I didn’t mix batteries. It has happened more often than not with batteries out of the same pack. Yes rechargeables or lithium are the way to go. I agree, which is why most of the lib reviews on this channel are lithium ion powered.

      The 6D is 178 Lumens which for it's time was amazing. There's also the 6V Halogen used in the older Magcharger (probably rare to find) which does about 200.
      Seems like the old school MAGLITE modders in 2007 on CPF would overdrive the bulbs (2 Cell Bulb in a 3 Cell MAGLITE) though you'd wanna use the Krypton bulbs and NiMH batteries. Heck, just running the OEM bulb with Lithium Primaries overdrives it.
      There are also more advanced mods using high wattage Halogen bulbs but you still need the time and money to do so. But LED is more efficient and brighter. I do prefer the Incandescent myself but it lacks punch especially when using Alkalines because the Voltage drops on a constant slope.
