  • Will the 43 year old kitchen machine from Kenwood keep up with it´s almost brand new big brother!? We test an old Kenwood Major against a new Kenwood Chef XL Titanium to see if you can save some money and buy a used, older machine instead of a brand new one.

    I still prefer the older mixer because it managed to last for more than 40 years which clearly demonstrates that planned obsolescence was not a thing when the machine was built - and that we could actually live in a much better world without it. Most of the stuff we buy now is probably going to end up in a massive pile of garbage in a couple of years which does a lot of harm to the environment (especially here in Russia). So, I’m totally standing for the sustainable approach. Thanks for the great video!💚

      I've seen people talk about the new model lasting them since it was released, so I think the newer one is also pretty good if you don't overload it.

    • @Iisakkiik
      @Iisakkiik Před 2 lety +2

      I'm pretty sure the new one will last just as well, not everything today is made to break. The fact alone, that the new machine's attachments still fit the 40 year old one inspire s lot of confidence in this company if you ask me.

    I am on my third Kenwood! The first one I had to give up when I moved from Sweden to Canada. About 37 years ago I bought the Kenwood Chef. Couldn’t get a Major then. A few years ago I finally bought the Major I always wanted. Love the larger stainless steel bowl. Still keeping the old Chef as I have accessories you can’t get for the Major. Love the machines!

      HI there. When you bought your Kenwood in Canada, did you get it at a department store? I remember when both Eaton's and Simpson's carried them, and then the Bay had lots of them when the Cooking Chef and KMix mixers came out. But now, none of the stores have them (at least, in Toronto). Costco.ca carries the 7-quart Titanium, which I hope to get some day. Thanks!

      @@ansabulfone6940 Thanks. I was surprised when I visited the newly-redesigned housewares section at the Bay store on Queen Street in Toronto a couple of years ago (the old Simpsons store). They no longer had any Kenwoods. When they were up on the 7th floor, they had all kinds of them, almost as many at KitchenAid mixers. Are you happy with your mixer? They look to be very strong. I'm thinking of getting a Kenwood Titanium 7-quart or the KitchenAid Commercial 8-quart as I want stainless steel tools (beater, dough hook).

    • @ansabulfone6940
      @ansabulfone6940 Před 3 lety +1

      Sashine B. The new Kenwood Major has all stainless steel accessories. Much nicer than the old aluminium dough hook and beater. I just checked Costco.ca and you can not beat their price, as long as it is the same machine. They are known to have a version all of their own. I love the machine, got most attachments when I git it. Some are hard to find. Kenwood has a website you can order from. Major no longer available there.

      @@ansabulfone6940 Thank you. Costco.ca had the Titanium on sale in May, down to about $439, but they were out of stock, probably due to the pandemic and lack of stock. It gets good reviews. • @user-lm4mn3yr2h
    @user-lm4mn3yr2h Před 10 měsíci +2

    I think you might need to remove the top casing from the old A707A by undoing the 3 screws around the liquidiser attachment base and removing the front slow speed outlet cover, it should then lift off. Then tighten the bolts which attach the horizontal gearbox to the vertical motor casing, which I suspect have loosened up. This should stop the head wobble.
    It's also worth slowing the lowest speed of the motor by turning the 2 screws clockwise on the motor unit. These can be accessed through the air vents on the underside of the motor unit whith the head raised and the machine upturned. But, disconnect the machine from the mains supply first because these are 1960's technology and have exposed electrical components⚠☠ Then turn the screws one notch each at time, before plugging in again to check the minimum speed. It's a step by step process which you should repeat until the planetary hub rotates at around 60 RPM on minimum speed, with the machine having been warmed up for a minute, or so, on a higher speed.
    If this works you'll likely find that you'll have a superior machine compared to the new model.

    Hey, I'm currently restoring my own Kenwood A707A and I just want to point out that the internals (gearbox and such) of the arm might be loose, which is why it appears to tilt when you look through the juice extractor outlet. To fix this you'll need to unscrew the screws in the high speed outlet (back), and detach the slow speed outlet cover (front). I don't think you'll need to remove the blue lower gear box cover. Then you can simply lift off the top cover, revealing the gearbox, belt, and such. The arm mechanism is attached to the base by 4 screws, i reckon some have loosened or dislodged due to vibrations.
    While you're there you should check for flour or grease residue that might've accumulated over the year, just clean it off with wet paper or cloth. It's not too important, but I at least had residue fall into the bowl when i first tried it. If you're experiencing a grinding or grainy noise it could be one of many things, the gearbox or hub assembly missing grease, something wrong with or loose in the motor, loose screws, uncalibrated controls, etc. You may have to tinker and troubleshoot to figure out why, but it probably won't spoil the integrity of the machine in the short run.
    Hope this helps :)

    Try to rub the enameld pan with some regular oil, rub it off with paper towels, and wash the pan with dish soap. That might work. It work for blackened aluminium, and it is the best and easiest way to get off that black residue on aluminium after it have accidentaly been in the dishwasher. Maybe it works for the white stuff on enamel as well, or maybe not, I don't know. But it is worth trying.

    Something is loose inside the red Major - it shouldn't be moving around like that. The motor is mounted on rubber bushings - maybe they have disintegrated due to age?

    Totally unrelated, but thought I had to mention it; I sat down with my P3 the other day to see if I could do the middle finger flick. Never thought it was practical to do anything but thumb or index finger flick before. Hate to break it to you, but after seeing how you struggled in that previous video, it feels kind of bad to say that I flicked it open with all five fingers within a few minutes. Not sure I can do them all in 10 seconds yet, but certainly seems to be within reach. Haven't watched videos of anyone else do it yet, but it seems to me like starting with the pinky gives the smoothest and fastest transitions. Hope to see your challenge video soon ;-)

    Old mixer machines will eventually need the grease replaced. I believe there’s a food grade/food safe grease that I used for repairing my Kitchen Aid Mixer; that was 12 years old when I bought mine used and repaired it.

      I've thought of having my 31 year old KitchenAid K5 mixer re-greased, but I don't know where to take it. I've seen the home videos where people do it themselves, not sure about doing it myself, though.

      Skære brænder bør være en fast del i alle køkkener, jeg er også opvokset med lyden af en Kenwood i mit barndomshjem, købte en chef kW 300 for bare 300 og er igang med at købe en del tilbehør har food processoren ( den er et must have hvis man skal lave store posoner. ) Har lige købt kødhakkeren da hakkekød i Danmark i supermarkederne er blevet virkelig dårligt pakket i gas. ( Man kan. Tilpasse en gammel mixer og ny hakker med en adapter og omvendt). Det cool ved de gamle Kenwood maskiner er at alt kan skiftes alt kan laves og udskiftes. Så det er maskinen for livet. Man kan ikke stilles fra sin Kenwood... Den holder nærmest evigt
