According to the game Avatar Generations, the Before/After Genocide dating system is used in at least some contexts. Though that might be a result of some writer desperately needing a calendar and picking the least bad option.
Most Avatar media doesn't mention calendars or anything, but there are passing references to a few systems; Wan Shi Tong's eras (no one knows how they work), a traditional calendar counting the number of days in the current Avatar's life (no one wants to use it because it's impractical), and possibly the Chinese zodiac (listed on the wiki with no citations explaining its relevance).

At best Ozai seems rather ambivalent towards spirits; he's certainly willing to genocide multiple entire cultures and a race of spiritual dragons to get his way, but we don't know if his blatant disrespect of life extends to the Spirit World or if he's more worried about projecting power and might have some idea that invading the spirits would open yet another front to his war.
Most likely, Zhao needed a secret move to debilitate the water benders, and Zhao being a raving narcissist was willing to literally destroy one of the two most important celestial bodies on earth to get an advantage and solidify his legacy.
While the Fire Nation does often have war room meetings that involves Ozai directly, and they do have their own network of Messenger Hawks which seems pretty unique to the Fire Nation, all of the generals and admirals would have to operate on some level of autonomy from Ozai's oversight. Zhao seems to keep the entire Spirit Oasis thing a secret even from Iroh up until just before he executes his plan, so I doubt Ozai knew about the Spirit Oasis or ordered Zhao to kill them.

Entering 100% fanfic territory: what if Iroh's son also could see the situation being really dire, and volunteered for, if not an outright suicide mission, some kind of highly risky gambit to turn the tide in Fire Nation's favour? Imho, it would fit almost perfectly with the guilt that Iroh feels - he could've deemed the mission too risky and apply that to the siege as whole. Instead his son had to die for Iroh to come to his senses.

Honestly an army of earth benders is waaay more terrifying to deal than an army of firebenders, the fire nation did all the damage they did because of Sozin comet for the first strike and their highly advanced tech, ships and weapons, and the fact the Dai Li screwed big time by alienating the Earth King and the entirety of the capital city basically leaving every province fighting by itself
Realistically speaking, earth bend is way overpowered in war periods, creating entire landscapes, walls, fortifications while every individual of your army being an walking trebuchet is just OP, the fact is Azula pretty much defeated the Earth Kingdom when she took control of the Dai Li, just because the earthbend they had
Kuvira had an army of earth benders herself, the support of the people, and the fact the entirety of the earth kingdom was basically dismantled and not united at all, also she IS from there, she knows every hint and trick necessary, being from terrain knowledge or millitery info, to defeat and subdue every other province

    More info
Camilla-Peony war, essentially a royal succession crisis in the fire nation from the crowning of Zoryu to the 290s BG.
Yellow neck rebellion - the entire rebellion was held by some cultist who wanted to make a nation that only existed in his mind or on paper. Members of the revolt grew erratic, going on killing sprees before the revolt would be crushed.
War of Chin the Conqueror - Chin was a governor presumably in the Northwest, during his governorship, the 46th king, who was corrupt, ascended to the throne, the 46th emperor's incompetence, failures, and corruption led to him starting an uprising presumably with popular support. Despite the military estimates being unknown, it can be infered that either Chin had a large army from the start or Earth Kingdom troops defected. The rebellion collapsed after Chin's confrontation with Kyoshi.
Era of peace - the Pax Britannica of this world, lasted a century and was started by Kyoshi.
Water Tribe - Earth Kingdom naval standoff - caused by a dispute over naval boundaries, lasted from 14 BG to the beginning of the Airbender Genocide.
The Hundred-year war - A war that lasted exactly 100 years that encompassed the globe. The war was marked by the Fire Nation invading a large part of the world and subduing certain areas, EX: Southern Water Tribe. The war ended in an allied coalition victory after the battle at wulong forest.
Dai Li Coup - Earth King Kuei had arrested City Secretariat, Long Feng, and shortly after, the "Kyoshi Warriors" (in truth, Azula, Mai, and Ty Lee) would arrive and, after finding out about the arrest of Long Feng, decided to make a deal with him and became essentially the leadership of the Dai Li in all but name, Azula would forge a plan that would be orchestrated as a 1-by-1 takeout mission that goes from the council of 5 to the Earth King himself. Azula crowned herself as Queen of the Earth Kingdom and the Dai Li would tear down part of the wall shortly after, letting the Fire Nation in. The fate of the rest of the lands that the Earth Kingdom controlled before the Dai Li coup is unknown, but one of the Dai Li Officers in one episode mentioned "The Council of 5 and the Military remain loyal to the Earth King" so it can be assumed that Azula only ruled in Ba Sing Se and had to deal with a civil war after the coup.
Collapse of the Earth Kingdom - occurred after the death of the queen to anarchists. The entire nation quickly collapsed into either full anarchy or warlords, being united by an Interim Government which would turn into a Nazi-Like Dictatorship.

Wasn't the Southern Watertribe basically occupied? I mean all water benders were kidnapped, and Zuko sailed there with impunity. Also, the Air nomads were completely wiped out, assuming that all Air Temples were conquered?

The Fire Nation was more focused on managing the Earth Kingdom. He sent troops to the Southern Water Tribe just to kill/capture the waterbenders. Zuko could have just sailed into Wolf Cove because the Water Tribe was already too depleted to put up any meaningful resistance.

Great video! The world of Avatar was and still an interesting fantasy world to this day. Haven't been watching this series for a very long time and I enjoyed both the last airbender and legend of korra. When Aang was still the Avatar, the Fire Nation was at the peak of its empire, almost everything under their control except the Northern Water tribe.
But when Korra became his successor, many things and events changed. Though I know her own homeland in the South had a rebellion, didn't realized it became a separate independent state contrast to its northern part even though they share the same element after the defeat of the Vaatu (Unalaq). Korra's reign was also what the Air Nation was revived due to the miracle of Air bending has returned to the world, but that also means unexpectedly another villain will appear; Zaheer, a terrorist leader (Red Lotus) whom recently acquired it as well, quickly learned and used his skill to escape from prison. His forces later sacked Ba Sing Se and assassinated the Queen, leaving Earth Kingdom into anarchy and disintegrated between separate factions. He also managed to defeat Korra though failed to kill her, but in the end his effort of bringing an end to the Avatar cycle was ruined when she rose and strike back. Even after defeating Zaheer, Korra felt useless and hopeless, isolating herself much from involving herself in the world affairs. Her isolation was what Kuvira, Earth general, rose to power. She managed to reunify the Earth Kingdom & eventually usurped authority from the useless Kid-King to become a Dictator. She almost conquered the Republic's capital but was disturbed and defeated by Korra when she gained herself confidence and hope. Thus, the Avatar restored the Earth Kingdom though the King no longer has the authority to rule, more less he becomes a symbolic one.
Amongst all these nations around Korra, only the Fire Nation was peaceful and had no incident.
Though IMO, you could have make some descriptions regarding the Avatars and events that happened. Once again, great video and I enjoyed it!

Yeah the South and the North officially split and became their own states at the end of Korra Book 2, it's mentioned in the speech Korra gives at the end. Though really for the most part the South was mostly autonomous for the longest time anyway with their own chieftian and all who just served "officially" under the Northern one.

It’s crazy how the Earth kingdom was losing to the fire nation, and that the Earth Kings had no idea that there was even a war going on.

I disagree with the notion that Omashu was unique in its degree of autonomy. Personally, I believe that the entire Earth Kingdom was incredibly decentralized and that there were dozens of Omashu-like kingdoms that were largelly independent but recognized Ba-sing-se's unique status. Something analogous to Spring and Autumn period in china.
