They got ONE THOUSAND musicians to play that perfectly in-sync, when my orchestra class of 30 couldn't handle that...
Be patient.
If im correct, this is during the competition? So all the houses/clans know 100% what they are doing. Not your ave players, they are THE top notch in the world :)
There probably are a lot playing just the drones. The humming sound. I play in a bagpipeband and atleast 20% of our pipers play on the drones when we have to perform.
@@garethsutherland9649 No, this is like the awards ceremony they dont practice for it - also it contains a varying level of player.
The Scotts are a different breed
Bagpipes are just about the only instrument that sounds better in an open field, rather then in an acoustics room. And a recording simply can't convey the true sound they produce, nor the feeling in your chest as 30 pipes ring through you
how about a huge church organ?
@@MrJakson112 nah. i don't think it'd sound better in an open field. but they sound so majestic in a dome though.
Idk, cannons sound pretty good in open field, I think Tchaikovsky agrees with me
@@MrJakson112 No a pipe organ needs the acoustic space to process the sound. Without the reverb it is very dry. The room is part of the instrument. Possibly in a valley or basin.
They sound beautiful in a church-will never forget my cousin playing the skye boat song for the song I went up the aisle to
Grandpa used to blast bagpipes in his car, to announce his arrival, was awesome everytime.

Brilliant story , I'm Scottish and live in Thailand the pipes always bring tears.
I love this story! I can imagine the excitement when you hear the echoing sounds of bagpipes knowing your grandpa is arriving. But I wonder how he plays the bagpipes while driving though. 🤔
I'm not even remotely Scottish, but this gave me a true chill..
I lived along a large river and we used to fish in the evenings. A big guy with a beard, kilt, the whole outfit would play his pipes in the park while we fished on the river. It was the most perfect place! I been in love with bagpipes and guys in kilts ever since. And, fishing, of course!😉
I love it!
As it should.
I'm not Scottish either and I find this amazing.
I am an American of Scots-Irish ancestry and every time I hear the skirl of the pipes a shiver always goes up and down my wee spine! Scotland forever! Never conquered by foreigners! Not even the Romans!
RIP William Millin who played this tune as the troops of Lord Lovat advanced on the beach at Normandy.
Along with All the Blue Bonnets and Road To The Isles. Sad, in the movie "Longest Day" all they played was Black Bear over and over.
I happen to know this name. Billy Millin is the hero of the song My Head Was Filled with Music by The Real McKenzies.
Should have stayed home, after Dunkirk!
I read that the Germans said they didn't shoot him as he marched up the beach as they assumed he was crazy.

I used to live a half mile from the festival, it was a nightmare. My dog nearly killed herself with stress.

@Barry on D Day, there was a piper walking up and down the beach, encouraging his troops playing the pipes. After the battle, he learned that several german soldiers had him literally in their sights, but, couldn't shoot "the poor bastard."
@Barry Just change your name to Dominic Cummings.
@Gavin MacNeish Simply naming some Scottish victories neither proves Rambos' ignorance or rebutts his question, as someone else could clearly name the same number of battles where the English won. To make a valid point you'll need to state an approximate number of battles (with reasons why you are including or excluding minor conflicts), the timeframe (with reasons for your earliest and latest dates) and quantify your understanding of the word "nearly".

Yup. My best friend growing up has Scottish heritage on both sides and her cousin was a champion piper. I've always loved the pipes and they always make me cry like a baby. Once, during a parade in a big city, I was just walking down the street and along came a pipe band and I had to run into a phone booth so no one could see me blubbering away. I called my friend up and had her listen. She was laughing at me and crying at the same time. Pipes, kilts, the hills full of heather (I was lucky enough to get to go to Scotland for 10 days to work in 1998. . . in the highlands) - it's just all so gorgeous. I even love good hagus! - and my background is Italian/German - and the Lord knows what else since we're generally all so mixed up now. ;)
Totally, Edinburgh. The drums and pipes are deeply ingrained in our DNA and it's also primordial, I well up every time🤣

You're an English foot soldier, fighting the French in a pitched battle. The fight is going poorly, your unit is half dead or wounded and more French units are advancing on your position. All of a sudden, when all hope seems lost, you hear the sound of pipes and drums echo above the cannon fire playing this tune. You look to the East and see the Scots Guards appear over the brow of a hill, marching to your aid, their presence alone is enough to turn the tide of the battle.
EDIT: If you're arguing that the Scots usually fought for the French, please note that I just wrote this as a bit of fun because I was so moved by the music and it wasn't meant to represent any particular true event. That being said, you will see I said the Scots Guards, not the Scottish as a whole. There is evidence of some Scots Guards siding with King James II (an ally of the French) during the civil wars of the late 17th century but after this they fought united as part of the British Army and took part in numerous notable events such as The Peninsular War and The Battle of Waterloo. Even though they may hate their English counterparts, they DID fight side by side and I like to imagine this scenario may have happened at some point :)

One of the most magical sounds on the planet 💥
Well done everybody, that was brilliant
Thrilling! AMAZING! I’m happy in my Lifetime I was able to hear & see such a Spectacle! From the USA, Scots are in my blood!
I'm Scottish and Irish descent myself I wear my Kilz whenever I can my maternal grandmother and her family came from Scotland. I tried to learn to play the pipes but I was no good my younger sister is very good on the pipes though and I listen to pipes every chance I get. I heard this Silas video and listen to it I got chills this is awesome
As someone of mixed Scottish and English heritage I have a special place in my heart for the sound of the bagpipes. They will always remind me of my grandparents RIP and next to the sound of a full Murrayfield singing Flower of Scotland there is nothing quite like them to stir the blood.
I am of both North English and Scottish herritage too, Clann Dunn. Proud of both and love the skirl of the pipes.
Wonderful way for a large group of people to come together. More music needed like this around the world soon, when it’s safe. ❤️
At least 3 generations from Scotland and the pipes and drums still touch my soul
WOW, that made my hair stand up! I love the pipes.
