Always enjoy coverage about Vampire Hunter D, which I feel doesn’t get enough love amongst other anime.
This was the first anime I’d ever seen, catching it in the early 90s on TBS, not even knowing what I was watching at the time, nor knowing the title (not that it would’ve mattered…googling wouldn’t be a thing for at least 15 years…). It was so mind blowing I couldn’t resist calling my friend and literally talking his ear off by recapping what I’d just watched. Moving from this to the Guyver series blew my 8 year old mind away…the gore, the animation style, the visuals…nothing compared to either at the time. Really takes me back.
Thank you for the nostalgia trip in covering such a classic.

I personally think the first volume of the Novel did an incredibly well job setting up the rich universe of VHD! It explains the entire history of how nearly every element of the world came about (why vampires rule the world, why they have renaissance aesthetic, why there are so many monsters, the different technologies, etc.) while also introducing many mysteries that are still unexplained. It also sets up what an incredibly mysterious character D is.
It is SUCH an excellent informative set up for a volume 1 that I tell people if you don’t like it by the end to not even bother with the rest.
With that said, I highly recommend the novels everyone! It is so mind blowingly better than the films and manga!!

Seeing "D" with its amazing designs and camera angles, very few repeated frames, not to mention early digital ink and paint even put the Disney Renaissance through the wringer in terms of comparable animation quality.

I actually rewatched Vampire Hunter D just yesterday before coming across this. I'll always remember my first time seeing it as it was the first Anime I ever saw. I saw it on HBO in the early 90s at a friend's house and the impact it had on me is immeasurable. This, Fist of the North Star and Akira were my first 3 (in that order). D in the two movies is one of the most perfect characters. I've only recently started reading the novels (on book 4 currently) and I love that the movies (and what I've read of the books so far) is that they just drop you in them like the old Weird Tales Pulp stories from the 20s and 30s. I could very easily see Vampire Hunter D in an old Pulp alongside something like Robert E Howard's Solomon Kane or Conan The Barbarian or even the works of H.P. Lovecraft. It has that same vibe. Because of that it's more about the story than D himself. I love how 4 decades later I still don't know anything definitive about him.

I loved this series along with many others over the years. My anime introduction came from none other than Leiji Matsumoto in the form of Galaxy Express 999. As a young child I had grown up with shows like Shogun Warriors but anime just hit differently for me. In 1993 as a young airman I had the pleasure of being stationed at Yokota AB and I was like a kid in a candy store. All the different manga and anime were literally everywhere. I was already familiar with Vampire Hunter D and enjoyed it immensely and searched almost voraciously for more. Iria and the Zieram series and Baoh were some of the other gems but I always came back to Captain Harlock and Vampire Hunter D. My teenage stepson's have now experienced the movies and enjoy them as much as I. It truly was a great experience and a great time!!

Great video man! Vampire Hunter D 1985 was my introduction to anime nearly 30 years ago and indeed I saw it on Cartoon Network's "Night of the Vampire Robots" special feature. You remark on the lower quality of this film a lot, which is fair to some degree, but despite its flaws it has been firmly in my top 10 anime of all time, alongside Akira, Fist of the North Star, and Golgo 13: The Professional (which I appreciated hearing a track of the OST in this video, haha) To me that whole late 80s bubble of gritty, dark, now vintage anime OVAs and films is unsurpassable and it still inspires to this day. And yeah, that Blu Ray of VHD 1985 is really incredible; it was the first Blu Ray I ever bought (figured it might as well be, since VHD 1985 was the first anime I ever saw) and I was floored by the detail, details which I had been missing on all my VHS and DVD versions of the film throughout the years. Although, I do wish they could have kept the original dub in as well because there were some audio features in it that I really loved. Anyways, thanks for making a video about one of my favorite classic anime films!

When I was in high school, every Sunday afternoon, Japan’s NHK news program This Week In Japan had a program about anime and how this medium gained in popularity in Japan. I was surprised to learn that there was anime for adults as well as for kids and families. It was eye opening and I was watching this program every Sunday afternoon when we got home from church.
Fast forward to a few years in the 80’s. AKIRA comes to America and it caused quite a stir with the manga and then the anime.
Fast forward to the early 90’s. Comic books were becoming more popular with their character driven plots and surprise endings. Television shows like The Flash was on Saturday nights, only to get canceled just when the writing was getting better. It was in 1991 when I purchased my first anime vhs tape . It was Arcadia Of My Youth(Waga Seishun No Arcadia). It was English subbed, but for me it was no problem reading the subtitles. It was the first time I learned how the Japanese used profanity. Other than that, it introduced me to the character of Captain Harlock.
In 1995, I saw Vampire Hunter D on TNT’s late show. I also saw the classic Robot Carnival on that network, as well.
When they were available on vhs, I had to get Vampire Hunter D. Second came Akira. Third came Wicked City. Followed by The Professional:Golgo 13 and 8-Man After.
Vampire Hunter D’s world is no place I want to live in. When the sun goes down, the terror comes out in search of victims.
D, I had once read was in reality, a 17 year old kid, who had lived for centuries as a Danpeil or Danpere , hunting vampires and other demons. Left Hand was the voice of his conscience, although he thinks D is contradicting himself and his nature. D made peace with who and what he is and walks a lonely road.
When Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust came out, it looked fantastic and iconic.
The closest thing to a live action adaptation was the film Van Helsing with Hugh Jackman, who was dressed as D but with more weaponry.

I'm a big fan of Hideyuki Kikuchi's VHD novels! I'm on volume 28, my goal is to catch up to his current books and read his new Greylancer books. It's been really, REALLY hard to find the books in their paperback format, so I've been reading them via the ebooks since volume 17 and slowly collecting the individual books as I can find them. Yoshitaka and Hideyuki are the PERFECT match as far as artist and author goes - the way Yoshitaka draws D is stunning. They're my favorite artist and author for sure. Thanks so much for the video, I hope more people can find out about D! :)

I caught this randomly on Sci-Fi channel during summer of 1993 when I was turning 13. It BLEW MY MIND!!! I already sort of new about Anime, but this made me a HUGE fan! I immediately rented or acquired every Streamlight Pictures release (who had the license for “V. H. D” and other films like the extremely under-rated hidden gem of “Golgo 13: The Professional”, the excellent “Akira”, “Wicked City”, and another personal favorite, “Fist of the North Star”!). And I was already a fan of Yoshitaka Amano from what I had seen of his “FF” art at that point. Still one of my favorite films, forget just in Anime or animation, of all time. The sequel, “VHD: Bloodlust”, is also very well done. Surprised we haven’t had more “VHD” films or series honestly.

I didn't even know this was a series - Thank you so much for enlightening me, I'll have to check it out :D
In my defence, I've only watched the (apparently) second movie which if I remember correctly didn't have the 'Bloodlust' in the title in my country and was just called 'Vampire Hunter D'. I remember watching the movie with my younger sister on VHS in the early 2000's with the English dub and Danish subtitles (I live in Denmark in Europe and here it's very common to watch things with subtitles - especially with movies like these) and enjoying it quite a lot (^-^) - my sister and I had a laugh at the end - and some of the tension at a very dramatic/emotional stabbing scene was ruined a little bit - because SPOILER (I guess) the translator apparently made a brain fart and mistranslated the sentence "Why did you miss my heart?" (or something along those lines) from what was supposed to be 'miss' as in "to not hit" into 'miss' as in "to long for/I miss you, darling, come back safe (I didn't feel like the other words my dictionary was suggesting for the translation were accurate enough so the last one was an example of the vibe)". I really hope I was able to get my point across at the end with English not being my native language. ^^''
Also Amano's art is fantastic - his and the works of Leiji Matsumoto really resonated with me as a kid and still do as an adult :)
I really enjoy your content and I've been introduced to so many new series thanks to your videos - I will be forever grateful for introducing me to Mononoke ;D Keep up the good work (^-^)

I also first saw Vampire Hunter D when it aired late at night on the Sci-fi channel in the 90's and I will never forget how it changed me. I was already watching a little anime, but it was basically just kid's stuff. I saw this movie and it blew my mind. I was in love with how creative, mature and graphic it was. It felt like there was so much thought put into the world and the setting. The writers didn't care to really explain things to the audience but I didn't care. I put together enough from the visual clues. This was an amazing blend of sci-fi, horror, dark fantasy. It's something that I haven't stopped looking for since my initial introduction but it's a difficult mix to find and most don't pull it off as well as VHD. Even though the 1985 movie may have had a low budget and a pretty subpar English dub, it still holds a special place in my heart.

I had this on VHS when I was a Kid; I absolutely loved this movie! I paid top dollar for My anime back then... we're talking 25-40 dollars in the mid to late 90's. I didn't have many but I had some of the best movies on VHS... Akira, Ninja Scroll, Wicked City. Perfect Blue to name a few. They were all lost when I was in the military and my Grandma sold her house. Since then I have replaced them with DVD & blu-ray! I just wish I had found this Chanel a week ago... because I definitely tried to get that D statue... I have never bought a statue like that, and I figured for my first I might as well go big and get something amazing & autographed! To bad they, sold out in 26 hours. I guess I'll just have to track down something more affordable and available... maybe I can find something from Berserk, for my first figurine🤔 Anyways, awesome video! I am now subscribed and belled up!
