hemelvaart=ascension, pinksteren (pinksterdag)=pentecost. Also, we actually have very few holidays compared to other countries. Easter, Ascension, Pentecost and Queen's Day (now King's Day) come in short succession after each other but then nothing for the rest of the year until Christmas.

Quite some tourists still come to The Netherlands to celebrate Koninginnedag (April 30), because they own an old tourist guide book. Too bad, since the celebrations for Koningsdag (King's Day) are on April 27.

Myeah King's day is when the whole country has a party. And everyone is invited. It's all day too, the things for kids start early. Bike decorating contest, building things from pallets, a raffle. Getting a good spot to put your "junk" at the market can be so hard in places they set out the kids before dawn to reserve a spot. Many free concerts.

I once wanted to celebrate kingsday in eindhoven, and I needed to take the bus but I couldn't take the first one becouse is was full. then came the next bus. only there where so many people in a line that I also couldn't get in that bus before it was full. so I decided not to go to eindhoven.
either way either way I find it way to busy in the big citys so I just celebrate it in my hometown.

I have to nuance something here.
The Netherlands has eight official national holidays: New Year's Day, Good Friday, Easter, King's Day, Liberation Day, Ascension Day, Whitsun and Christmas. Neighboring countries Germany and Belgium have nine and ten public holidays respectively. Finland stands out with the most public holidays in Europe: fifteen public holidays!
Number of public holidays per country in Western Europe:
    Finland: 15
    Spain: 14
    Greece: 12
    Denmark: 11
    France: 11
    Italy: 11
    Sweden: 11
    Belgium: 10
    Luxembourg: 10
    Portugal: 10
    Germany: 9
    Ireland: 9
    Great Britain: 8
    Netherlands: 8
In the Netherlands you do not automatically have a day off on a public holiday. There is no law stipulating that employees are free on certain holidays. Schools and government services are often closed, but businesses are not. It is determined per sector which public holidays count as days off.

The official reason that it became the birthday of the queen mother was to honour her . The unofficial reason but more important reason is economic. January 31st is mid winter and the streets will not get crowed with beer buying folks. It's expected that the next queen will also do something similar.

    • @miranda4848

True indeed queen Beatrix was born on january 31st... not a great day for an outdoor party.. And our crownprinces Amalia was born december 7th. In the midst of winter... not a good day either.. so she will probably hang on to her fathers birthday in April too !

I wish for you that you could have experienced Queensday as it was before it became Kingsday.. Back then it was sooooo much better. The whole country used to go nuts, now it's a watered down affair.. Amsterdam used to be amazing, free(!) parties from one end of the city centre to another, couple million people f-ed up having fun.. just heavenly! Now it's all outside the city at some venue where they charge stupid money for each party organized with overpriced drinks (no ducking into an "Albert Heijn" for supermarket prices) and all is heavily policed. The atmosphere of the day has taken a nosedive unfortunately (even before covid)... But then.. it could all just be me getting old and whistfull and sour talking about back in my day 🤔🤪

It all has to do with religion and we dont have the most holidays in The Netherlands. Germany, our neighbourcountry, have many more holidays. Just an example. Queen's day was on the birthday of the fomer queen because the daughter who was queen, her birthday was on Jan 30th and everybody prefers nice weather to celebrate it. Thats why it was that way. Now we have King's Day and this time it really is on his birthday.

I'm not very fond of queen's/king's day. It's mostly a tideous walk behind lots of other people pretending the weather is not that bad getting bombarded with electronic 'dance' music watching people getting more drunk on lukewarm beer by the hour. It's too much like shopping for stuff you need an extremely busy saturday, but with all the discomforts of a night out on the town.
I never really enjoyed it in the past either. Most of my friends tended to be anti monarchy and were ostentatiously indifferent about they day, but got drunk anyway. I often went to Amsterdam to sell stuff and when that went well it was a fun day working/making money. If you have a good product and a good spot you could easily make 500 that day. I also had great fun once when Queen's night went a bit out of hand and we bought a whole stand with other people's stuff to show off our intoxicated sales skills.
I like the phenomenon, I like kids trying to make a buck, but it's mostly people mitigating boredom by keep on moving.
