Fude Nib Fountain Pen Urban Sketching Tutorial // Sailor Fude Pen

- Here is a fun sketch with a fude pen - a really lovely bit of kit, designed for calligraphy, but brilliant for sketching and bringing all sorts of bold, fine and textured lines into our sketching.
When we are urban sketching, especially, getting out and about - what is more lightweight than one pen and a sketchbook??
You might have seen me use it in a few of my tutorials before as well. If you want to see exactly which pens I use, check out the supplies tab on my website - urbansketch.co.uk
Now, there are, of course, alternatives - such as using a felt pen, or a range of different fine liners. That said, these alternatives aren't not quite the same either.
In this sketch we'll look at how we can use outlines and shapes to create our image, and then a range of different textures and techniques to play with our fude pen.
We'll treat the image as a series of layers, and these different fude pen techniques will separate those layers out and give us a quirky and fun sketch.

I used this sketch done with my Sailor fude nib fountain pen for lesson four of the 10-day challenge on hatching. Thanks Toby from Toronto Ontario Canada 😊
Awesome!!
This could be the video that gets me to use my Sailor Fude de Mannen pen more. It's a pen that takes a bit of getting used to, but watching this video has shown me how it will definitely be worth the effort to use it more. It would be great for developing loosening up with lines and the hatching techniques can be used to make value study sketches. Thanks for this video.
Go for it!
My good man, it is pronounced Foo-day. We are told how to say it by its spelling: fudè. It's short for Ofuda, Meaning brush.
Love the video. love the information contained within.
From the Japanese fude calligraphy brush, so I've heard.
I literally had no idea hehe. Thanks for the info ☺️ like Nigella Lawson and 'mee-crow-wee-vay'
Great fun. And effective shading techniques. Thank you.
Thank you! Cheers!
Fine demonstration using fude pen. Thank you!
Thanks!
I recently purchased the Hongdian fude pen and, I have too say, so far i am really impressed.
Ooo not heard of that brand - enjoy it though!
@stellaball7289 I love my Hongdian!! It’s a little more expensive than the Sailor but totally worth it as I find the nib gives more line variations and has a way better ink flow!
Hi Toby, I got the fude pen this week after watching yours, and a few other artists recommend it it's so great .. I also did this sketch .loved it, thank you ✌️
Great to hear!
Those are cool, I'll Ck into them more, don't know if I want to give up my fine line fountain pen,but that would be a nice addition to my tool box,I have some space next to my felt tip fineliners..🚴
It's not my favourite thing , but great for minimalist sketching when you really don't feel like watercolor
Thanks for the video Toby.
No worries
Nice small tutorial to get the concepts across.
Glad you think so!
Love your videos. Come to Japan, lots of fu-de pens here to choose from.
I wish! It's actually where we're going to go on honeymoon next year!!

How did you make the decision to leave the front two bushes white? No marks at all?
A great question - hard to verbalise the answer, but really to give some more space to the image. It's just a sketch so doesn't need to be finished, and I feel that blank on a page has a powerful pushing affect on our vision/brains. It's also a love hate thing, so some people feel white is ugly - for me it's tension and interesting...
Hopefully that is an answer!
thanks that's great. are you using soluble ink?
I honestly can't remember - I suspect it's not. But if there is smudging, it's because a fude pen lays down a lot of ink so it take a while to dry.
Thanks for the video!! Really helpful. A question: do you use a 40 degree or a 55 degree nib?
I actually have no idea! Sorry 😔
The green color pen is a 55 degrees nib
Hi Toby. How would you incorporate watercolor to this type of sketch?
Good question - probably with only a few touches of bold colours, maybe picking out the red roof and a couple of trees for example
@@TobySketchLoose thank you so much!!!
I personally think that this type of sketch looks best in monochrome. But, if you can't resist color then try sketching it with a colored ink. Otherwise, let the hatching be the color. 😊
Or, maybe, a touch of cian in the sky... 🤔
Hi Toby, I have bought a flude pen, but after 2 days of not using it, it wont work. I usel Quink permanent ink. Any ideas? I've inblocked it so it writes but not upside down and yhen blocks up again. I am frustrated as I loved using it☹
Oh I'm sorry.
I'm not familiar with Quink permanent ink - googling it looks to be foutnain pen safe.
I'm really sorry that I don't have a clever solution other than trying to flush it a couple of times, then either trying different ink, or returning the pen for a new one. Sometimes the nibs are flawed and thus block - which is really frustrating.
After every use you must wash the pen and rinse it with a dry towel. Then let the pen rest upside down. Did you do that ? :)
@@10418 Hi there, no I did not do that , no idea I should. Have I ruined it?
@@sovereign142 if it's any consolation - I have never rinsed my pen, and it still works fine. I think Origano is right technically, but in practice I don't think many people do this. I think you've been unlucky :(
@@TobySketchLoose Yup, I think I have
I hear most people say Fude as "Food-EH"
I’ve lost mine 😮
