    Never really thought about how much must go into an airshow display, so to have a sim hobbyist be the one to highlight it by going so deep is kind of mental.
    Super impressed, makes me want to try it rather than just shooting missiles at stuff - just have no idea where to start.

    The wistle on the P51 is the air blowing into the gun holes in the wing.

  • @Bo_Nidle
    @Bo_Nidle Před 2 lety +4

    Cool video.
    With regards to the P-51D whistle? It IS caused by the inner most gun tubes of the three guns in each wing.
    This tube is recessed into the leading edge of the wing by several inches back to the muzzle of the first gun, while the remaining outer guns have their muzzles just protruding from the leading edge.
    At high AoA the passage of air over the inner gun tube causes a resonance tone in exactly the same way as blowing air over the neck of a bottle. It only occurs during climbs, dives and turns and not in straight and level flight.
    Its easy to confirm this by watching a P-51D with guns perform and then watch a P-51D with the guns removed and with the ports faired over giving a clean leading edge, perform. ....The one with the guns will whistle while the one without the guns will not.
    In 2012 I visited Stallion51 in Florida and flew TF-51D (originally a P-51D) "Crazy Horse", it had no guns hence a clean leading edge; It did not whistle. Its stablemate "Crazy Horse 2", which is often seen at airshows, has guns and does whistle.
    Another thing to confirm this is that the Razorback P-51B/C's do not whistle in this way. The four guns in the Razorback wings are arranged in a different way to the D and have no inner blast tubes, thus there is nothing to cause the whistle.
    If the whistle was caused by the ventral air intake or the supercharger, as many mistakenly believe, then the Razorbacks would whistle in the same manner as the bubbletop D.....but they don't.

    • @CommandT
      @CommandT  Před 2 lety +1

      Aaaaaaaahhh! Super interesting! Thank you! And your argument is very logical so I do believe it! Makes me wonder who on earth would remove the guns and fair over the holes in this case! This is like the second best thing about a Mustang (after it's looks)! Thanks for the detailed explanation. That is much appreciated!! :)

The Thunderbirds train up there, so we got to see them daily in the off season. In my humble but biased-Marine opinion, they approach but don't come quite close to the Angels. Both sets of pilots are outstanding, but they literally do not come close enough to each other for the WOW factor the Angels generate.

    Back in 2004 a group of virtual pilots did something similar with I think at the time was Lockon. The only aircraft in Lockon was an F-15's and the Virtual Thunderbird as what they were calling them self's needed F-16's so they Masked the F-15's to look look like F-16's. I think you can still find there videos on CZcams. Go look and I think you'll enjoy them. Oh they also rented out a movie theater in Las Vegas and invited the Thunderbirds to come and join them and all of the pilots did.

    Only thing I’d change is the transition out of the High Alpha; instead of burner and levelling off, I’d go burner and just climb with the same AoA. I’ve seen that at air shows and it’s awesome!
    Have you done a demo that included the high performance climb? Always a highlight for me.

  • @LordViking396
    @LordViking396 Před 2 lety

    As for the whistling sound - the other possible explanation is the air ramming into itself around the outside and the gap of the air scoop. Considering that on airshow altitudes the supercharger is usually turned off. The gun ports are covered when not firing on Spits so that would mean the sound could not come from there, meaning that it has to be something else.

    • @LordViking396

      czcams.com/video/9LV12aeJBFE/video.html

    • @CommandT
      @CommandT  Před 2 lety

      I actually do think it's the gun ports. Spitfire is not an explanation as the aerodynamics of all gun ports are specific. Lots seem to show as proof that those without gun ports don't whistle and those that have gun ports do. Mustangs I mean. And the B versions don't whistle as they don't have gun ports at all.

  • @kablamoman
    @kablamoman Před 2 lety

    Interesting what you say about the roll damping. I don’t have the F-18 but in the Mirage module you can notice that it’s the FBW actuating a little opposite elevon to stop the roll on a dime. Maybe the FBW logic for the F-18 could be tightened up a bit if it’s a bit mushy in arresting the roll.

    Hi, Command T. You happen to be correct. The roll rate in a real Hornet is a bit faster and crisper than in DCS. However... There is some information sensitivity in portions of the Hornet's flight envelope, which, for security reasons, are not yet depicted with full fidelity in DCS.
    As for 'smashing her down', you are indeed supposed to thump a Hornet down on the runway hard enough to trip the WOW (weight on wheels) sensor.
    I hope this has been somewhat informative.😎
