      Please do! I teach actuary students and it's hard for me to give an honest assessment of the job (day to day) as someone who does NOT have industry experience (planned to be an actuary for a short time but landed an academic job instead).
      In particular I find myself (based on many previous discussions) "warning" students that it's a "boring" business/desk job and I'm always wondering if I'm being a bit too harsh in that assessment. I do also tell them that it pays well, it's relatively stress free, you get paid study time, and the hours are good... Come to think of it, maybe grass really is greener on the other side! :p

    Can you do a video on how covid 19 will affect your work, the insurance industry, and the demand for actuaries if people trying to become an actuary?

    • @Actuaryelle
      @Actuaryelle  Před 4 lety +2

      I dont think it hurts the demand for actuaries. Just had an announcement at work today that one of my teammates is going to another company- so people are definitely still hiring!

    Contrary to popular conception, actuaries do not calculate risk of disaster, they set it themselves. Actuaries are the societal arbiters of life and death, choosing how often they want catastrophes to occur and to whom

    haha
    Also, I am looking for a job right now. It is hard to get an interview opportunity for internships. Do you have any recommendations for me to apply for other related jobs? Would it be good to apply only to an insurance company to become an actuary?

    • @Actuaryelle
      @Actuaryelle  Před 4 lety +1

      I'm so sorry. I know how much time and energy goes in to studying for these exams.
      I cant tell you how to live your life, but personally I would do the following:
      1. Give yourself permission to feel sad/annoyed/angry/bummed.. whatever it is that you're feeling. Yes, other people have bigger problems than a cancelled exam, but this exam was important to you and you're allowed to grieve it.
      2. Try to acknowledge and express gratitude for all the good that you still have in your life. I dont know your personal situation, but I hope you're healthy and safe
      3. Personally, I wouldn't keep studying. I might keep a formula sheet near me and try to glance over that every day or two just so I dont completely forget what's on the syllabus, but definitely wouldn't try to full-on study. That's too much pressure
      4. Try to fill your time with positive things that you didnt have time for when you were studying. For me, its yoga. (Also watching too much CZcams!)
      Stay safe. Hope this helped a tiny bit.

    Great video! You requested our request for videos. Do you have or can make a video on how you chose CAS vs SOA? Also could you provide the steps required to study outside of University? Were there certain resources you used? I recently took courses by following a different program undergraduate because mine was AgEcon, so I took courses as non degree seeking from U of MN's actuarial science program. However I am stuck finding the resources I need to understand how to be prepared for my exams. Where did you go to get the information you needed when sitting your first exam in University?
    Thank you!
