    I'm sold. Especially the "not facing the public" reason. Seemed like a job that would have clients or customers, but since it doesn't I'm on board.
    Btw, the past few weeks all the major CZcamsrs have been bitching about the logarithms changing and screwing up theirs channels. Solve that issue and make a video on it and I'm sure that video would hit millions of views easy. You just seemed better equipped to do so than anyone else I watch.

      The reason that big youtubers are claiming there was an algorithm change is because they are seeing changes in the way that their videos are being viewed. They may be 100% right, but I wouldn't be able to say what the algorithm changes are without seeing the algorithm.
      My personal analytics would not provide enough insight, because I just don't get enough views. Anything that I could say on the subject would be regurgitating something that i read online.
      I do agree... if I knew the answer, it would make a great video ;)

Have you heard people talk about - Charlottenon Property Packtrain - (Have a quick look on google cant remember the place now ) ? Hey, I love your videos. This one in particular one resonated with me, as you mentioned Engineering. I am an engineering student, and I picked it because I liked math. I did not know about the actuarial profession until about a year ago. I have started to get very unenthusiastic about engineering after doing internships and seeing how little maths and theory there is on the job. You mentioned that there is a lot in the actuarial profession. My one question is whether a career in actuary can offer a good variety in day to day work? I would hate to do the same thing every day. Your videos are awesome, you are awesome, thank you :)

    • @Ellellevlog
      @Ellellevlog  Před 7 lety

      When you're an actuary, your goal is to predict the future. There is no formula that allows you to predict the future (if there was, that'd be pretty cool though). There are acceptable techniques, but it's the actuary's job to use critical thinking and creativity to find the best methods for the current problem.
      Obviously the level of creativity will vary depending on the type of actuary that you are, and the role that you're in

  • @CFMARAIS88

    I agree with you, actuaries are not replaced... yet... however, with the rise of data science and all that goes with it, if actuaries (at least P&C actuaries) doesn't keep up with the trend, our jobs will disappear in 10-20 years.

    • @Ellellevlog
      @Ellellevlog  Před 7 lety +1

      Sure, but redefining what it means to be an actuary does not mean that actuaries will disappear. It just means that actuaries will exist in a different form. I think it's cool to be "part of the evolution"

    • @CFMARAIS88
      @CFMARAIS88 Před 7 lety

      Fully agree! My point is just that we need to indeed be part of the evolution... Honestly, I see many of my fellow actuaries that lack the desire to change. I have been to many conferences where the speakers kind of reinforced what I see, and perhaps made me biased. Nevertheless, your videos are pretty cool! You give solid advice for graduates - keep it up!

    • @Ellellevlog
      @Ellellevlog  Před 7 lety

      +FemtoBlaster1234 I think that, the "new generation of actuaries" will trend in the direction of data scientists / programmers... but no, I don't think we're replaceable in the near future.
      Of course, that's my own opinion. Others may disagree with me.

      I know many many people in upper management who started off as actuaries. Definitely a possibility.
      As for it becoming tedious, I imagine it could. I haven't been working that long so I can't speak to that.

    • @Ellellevlog
      @Ellellevlog  Před 7 lety +1

      I'm not fully informed on the matter, but from what I know:
      -if you want to become an fsa, the soa doesn't recognize it
      -the cas does recognize it, but they just released their new 2018 exam structure yesterday, and I imagine the new exams won't be accredited
      If you want to go cas, crediting the couple exams that you can doesn't seem like a bad idea, but be sure to use the time that you save on those exams to do something that looks good on a resume (ie writing other exams or doing an extra curricular with transferable skills)

    some kind of mega algorithm has been incepted for actuarial science?
    If it has or is to be, its quiet exhilarating a thought for the amount to live data consumption and processing it thought dynamically evolving models. I am visualising this to be an Atom Collider of the Actuarial Universe. Hhhuuufffff !!

      UCSB has an Actuarial Degree program, that includes a Masters program. Their bachelors program has you ready to take the 5th test after graduation. Their program is structured in a way that has you taking your exams while you are still in school for them. They were the first university in the states to offer a degree in Actuarial Sciences. I am currently starting at CSU Channel Islands to pursue a Math degree with a concentration in Actuarial Sciences. In my research, I found some Universities in Florida that offer Actuarial Science degrees

  • @wryed
    @wryed Před 7 lety

    Not 100% sure on this, but I recall you saying that it's the exams that are what make one become an actuary. If true, do you think it would be beneficial to take another major such as business or finance? (+ the off chance that I might decide to pursue a different career) Or would it just be better to major in actuarial science because maybe that makes it easier to pass the exams? I know this is kind of a loaded question so if you can't answer it that's perfectly fine c: I loved the video by the way!

    • @Ellellevlog
      @Ellellevlog  Před 7 lety

      +Eilferan I found it helpful to major in actuarial science, as it definitely helped me prepare for the exams... but being well rounded is also helpful.
      You'll definitely learn some finance as part of an actuarial degree. There's no perfect answer. And there's no wrong answer.
      Don't you hate that about life? Making decisions is hard
