Pianist Chick Corea has lived many lives as a musician, from post-bop wunderkind to free-jazz maverick to fusion explorer to chamber-jazz eminence. That imprecise tally leaves out a lot in an expansive career - but, more to the point, it creates the false impression that Corea compartmentalizes his musical output, when the truth suggests something far more holistic.
Jazz Night in America caught up with Corea during a recent gig at Scullers in Boston - just across the river from Chelsea, Mass., where he was born and raised. He was on tour with a new trio he calls Vigilette, with Carlitos Del Puerto on bass and Marcus Gilmore on drums. The set list combined songbook standards like "On Green Dolphin Street" with originals like "Rhumba Flamenco," each number delivered with Corea's brand of articulate flair.
A few days after the performance, Corea sat down with Christian McBride - our host, and his longtime musical collaborator - for a collegial and far-ranging conversation. They discuss the first time Corea saw Miles Davis, an experience that changed his life, and one he recalls with absolute detail. Corea also reflects on the role of an artist: "We have a mission to go out there and be an antidote to war, and all of the dark side of what happens on Planet Earth," he says. "We're the ones that go in and remind people about their creativity."

This performance was recorded live by Antonio Oliart at Scullers Jazz Club in Boston, MA, on Sept. 19, 2018.

I will tell my Chick Corea story here: It happened in 1974 in Brockport, NY where he and the original Return to Forever gave a concert at the exposition hall near the college I was attending. I was fortunate enough to be standing in the right place when the band exited. Chick and Lenny White came out first and waited for their vehicle. I suddenly got brave, walked up to him and said, _"Excuse me, Mr. Corea, what advice can you give someone who wants to be as good at what you do?"_ He grinned at me and said, _"You've got to love it like it was your child. Good luck."_ Waved, turned on his heel and off they went.
sounds like Chick for sure

Pure gold advice. Thank you for sharing. ❤️🙏🏼
Another jazz genius has left us. RIP, Chick.
😊
RIP Chick Corea, was so lucky to be in consert with you, best show in my life so i raise my glass to you, and thank you for all the incredible music you have given me! ❤ ❤ ❤
Long live Chick!

There is a young pianist from Ukraine, a bright successor of Chick Corea's style, I advise him to all lovers of Chick Corea's music. czcams.com/video/c3m62pHjcGI/video.html&lc=Ugxu--yR5FUgDILMmi94AaABAg.9lHjcuc_jSz9lHp-274y_u
RIP Chick Corea. I discovered Jazz many years ago because of him.
A Single Red Balloon - nice reference - loved that movie. And loved Chick.
I discovered his music because he died
@@jansonad Kind of unfortunate if you would ask me
THIS IS HOW YOU PLAY THE DRUMS! Seriously Marcus, serving the music, never over playing,Insane dynamic control and contrast when it counts!
thought the same!
any idea what model cymbal he's riding on in the center?
@@ryanthornton1629 Custom man, most of his pieces are custom made either from the zildjian sound lab, stuff he's found or getting an obscure cymbal start with and getting someone outside of zildjian to add hammerings
Well, he is the grandson of Roy Haynes.
This was great, I have been researching "learning powerful methods to build your Chi energy" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you ever come across - Fellmeroni Rudimentary Chi - (do a search on google ) ? Ive heard some amazing things about it and my brother in law got cool success with it.
Today is a sad day in our music world.
The legend has transcended to another realm where he returns to forever...
but the legend’s legacy will never end.
See you Chick.
We'll meet, I know. Chick.
Chick is the buddah. He will be back.
Watching this video is so different now... RIP Chick
Chick Corea didn't die, he just Returned to Forever...
Beautiful comment thank you ❤️
Chick Corea is one of the pillars that modern jazz rests on. His disjointed phrasing is like a filming at a busy street corner: taking it all in but not following any passer-by in their daily toils. It is like Antonioni's Blowup.
Great comment,
chick corea is a living jazz musician icon giving players like carlitos del puerto and marcus gilmore the opportunity to share the concert stage with him. success to his trio vigilette.
"I want to thank all of those along my journey who have helped keep the music fires burning bright. It is my hope that those who have an inkling to play, write, perform or otherwise, do so. If not for yourself then for the rest of us" - Chick Corea's last words - the most beautiful ever written. The man, the music , the legacy - Chick Forever . RIP
R.I.P.
That really hit home tonight. Maybe i should brush the dust of my ol`guitar after standing there taunting me for years. Thanks!
His band sitting there with a big smile each time he does anything solo, and rightfully so!
Rest in Peace to a true pioneer and legend! We love you Chick.
RIP
The bass solo in the last song, Fingerprints, was one of the most enthralling Jazz bass and drum solos I've seen.
Yep, we have not one but three beasts here ...
R.I.P Chick Corea. One of the most amazing musicians I have ever had the pleasure of listening to.
Maestro de maestros Chick Corea, RIP. He's now gone but his music and memorable shows like this one will live and stay with us forever
Favoloso
The pure joy this brings me to watch is remarkable. The musicianship behind this, the chemistry is absolutely beautiful to see. Just unbelievable
Pure magic. Pure love.💖🎶🎶🎶🌠
CHICK COREA, A CLASS ACT FROM THOSE JAZZ ERA YEARS! GOD BLESS YOU ALWAYS! THANKS FOR GIVING US YOUR JOY FOR MUSIC! WE LOVE AND LOVE YOU IN RETURN! GOD BLESS IN MUSICAL HEAVEN!!!
Wow!!! Sir Chick Corea's musical genius was/is so effortlessly, flawlessly, intricate and timeless that...I literally thought of him being physically present gracing us all forever....RIP MAESTRO!!!

Thinking its a blessing to play with Chick Corea, but I think Chick is happy to be playing with this drummer and Bass player.
He has lived many lives indeed, and will live many more.
RIP to creator of the fusion of Jazz with Rock, the Master Chic Corea.
One of his masterpieces is “Spain” which he wrote in 1971.
A great loss for Jazz
RIP THE MASTER OF JAZZ-ROCK. THANK YOU FOR YOUR WORK
Sorry man, but if I'm right, "Sketches of Spain" is a composition from Joaquín Rodrigo ("Concierto de Aranjuez").
But for sure, Chick Coreas interpretation is stunning beautiful.
@@cucuucuuu You’re right. But I meant his classic that became an standard “Spain” that he released on his album Light As A Feather” with his band Return To Forever in 1972
Regards.
Everything he wrote was a masterpiece, but nothing was greater than "500 Miles High" on the same album. I listened to it everyday the first and only time I fell in love and nothing spoke to me more directly.
Rest in peace to this legend. The influence that he and his music had on people, including myself, is out of this world. 🕊
marcus' playing feels so relaxed
Magical! Imagine, 77 years old and never as on fire as he is now! Not to mention Carlitos Del Puerto and Marcus Gilmore, young musicians taking jazz to another level (beyond forever ;-) )
Sublime. I'll miss him. I never got to see him play and I love his touch. A friend said he dropped in with Bobby McFerrin and he started playing drums. He was amazing and it changed my friends life too. He moved from classical to jazz but still loves his classical music. Shout out to Dave Lane and Gary Walker for inspiring me to play jazz and Gary Walker for GIVING me 'Light As A Feather' on vinyl. I couldnt believe it. Love you both.
Rest in Power, hermano. You will always remain a legend of the piano, and a hallmark of Jazz to me.
Chick - I will never forget hearing The Solo Improvs for the first time- I didn't know such music existed. It changed me. You gave so much to this world!
No words left in praise of this great Jazz star pianist, God of improvisation, awesome artist and a great teacher, all of us Jazz lovers will miss your unique music, charisma, and this huge heritage of your music you have left us and future generations, RIP chick God bless you wherever you are, miss you sir, Sennen Antonio Dourado.
Chick fought for jazz forever , till his last breath. Pls continue his legacy, whatever music I listened in life. My home is always Jazz. May it always be your home as we all grow old together.
Rest Forever in our hearts.. thank you for the amazing music... RIP Chick Corea ❤️️
My Chick story... I saw his show with Bela Fleck way back in 2007, bought the Enchantment CD and waited afterward for them to sign it. They were both very gracious - I told Chick I admired his fearlessness. He laughed and said, "It's just the fun of it, man!" It sounds simple, but that moment really helped unlock my improvisation. It was like he was giving me permission to just go for it and trust the music. And I'm no kid - I had just turned 40, and I feel like I've been growing ever since. Thank you, Maestro, and godspeed!
The Vigilette trio with Marcus Gilmore and Carlitos Del Puerto is quite possibly the most exciting rhythm section that has ever been assembled since the Akoustic Band combination of Dave Weckl and John Patitucci, they exude so much youth and vibrance and it really shows in their playing, Chick Corea has always had an eye for great talent and he has done it once again by choosing two of the best young prospects on the scene today. One of the finest trios led by one of the greatest musicians of all time who just keeps on getting better and better.
Yes.
Thank you so much for posting this!
Thank you, thank you, thank you, dear Maestro! 🙏 RIP!!!
Decías que la música, la de verdad, no tiene nombre.
Hasta siempre, Chick Corea❤️
Si tiene.Se llama three quartets, friends, mad hatter....etc.Saludos RIP CHICK COREA.
Amazing pianist. Wow! I never get tired of listening to Chick Corea and always discover something new, a new little details in something he does. Astonishing also that nobody in the audience knew who Scarlatti was. One must admire Chick Corea for "splaining" the audience by calling Scarlatti "his thing"... The Scarlatti piece is breathtaking. What a treasure this jazz musician is. He's made my life richer.
Saw him at the Village Vanguard years back with Miroslav Vitous on Bass and Roy Haines on Drums. They played Monk from the album Trio Music. You could hear a pin drop during Chick's solos! A memorable show indeed. Julliard students spent over an hour prior to Chick's appearance tuning the Bossendorfer upright.
Bösendorfer 😀😊
A Giant of jazz has left us RIP.
Q.e.p.d. chic corea desde el sur del mundo los que te admiramos y seguimos a través de los años te volveremos a escuchar..en el camino al silencio....

Wow, this is amazing. Thanks!
how good is it that we all get to see this !!
I love this concert so much!
RIP Chick. You will be missed. My love for Jazz began with "Light As A Feather", the first album I ever owned, and continued to grow with you, and those you have influenced.
Chick Corea showing his respect for Scarlatti shows that all true musical innovators have a respect for tradition.
This is incredible musicianship ! fabulous trio ! thanks Chick Corea
I find new things in this every time i listen to it, absolute gem!
I haven't been able to stop listening to Maestro Chick Corea's music since learning of his recent passing. I wish I had a chance to see him live in concert. Thanks for the amazingly expansive repetoire of music and the legacy you've left behind. Rest well, and peacefully, Maestro.
What makes this music so much more interesting and soulful is their pure joy to stand on stage, and of course their communication not just between themselves but also with the audience. Amazing.
I am so exiced and now i go to play the drums! Wonderful concert!
MY HEART IS CRYING BUT MY SOUL IS EXTREMELY THANKFUL THAT I HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO LIVE IN THIS TIME WITH MUSICAL INFLUENCES LIKE ALL THESE KATZ. ESPECIALLY CHICK WHO WE ALL WILL MISS GREATLY.

Magnificent! From Havana, Cuba (we're waiting for the next jazz wave at Zorro and Cuervo!) Love you Chick.
This is not a question of taste (I love it!!!) . It's pure class and wonderful , high level art.
Marcus is Roy Haynes' grandson, Chick's long-time music partner. Chick introduced many young talents to the world. RIP, maestro
Didn't know that.....Haynes is really pushing to see that Century mark....dude is 97yrs old....long Live Haynes..✌
Great Trio. I love the harmonic that comes from them, filling the entire space.
This is perfectly recorded. I LOVE THE AUDIO QUALITY!!!
Oh to be one of these two young men that get to make music with this legend! I can almost see the brain waves that are flying around in the air between them! Such intent listening to each other! Communicating on a totally metaphysical level!
I love it. Especially this flamenco piece.
Con los años el sonido de éste hombre ha crecido en calidad y sentimiento. Excelente.
Maestro inolvidable Chick Corea. Todos los ritmos se hacían mágicos en su piano. Hasta siempre Genio de la música mundial!!

I just started to listen to jazz and I owe it all to Chick Corea because since I heard about his going I started to investigate more about him and he opened a new world to me with this fantastic genre that I had never dared to listen before, I will always be grateful to him
Chick looks so relaxed! Well, I'd be relaxed as well if I had these two playing with me ;)

Se divertiram muito fazendo beleza.
Thanks for that great upload
Such a timeless interpretation of all these tunes, and I loved the colors you used in Zyryab. It was cool to hear this piece again after I learned it three years ago.
Chick is awesome, just found this! Love it and I saw him perform in Boulder, CO. We were right up front in a very small club!! 40 years ago and he is still so smooth!
So very talented! RIP to a Master at his craft. ❤
There's so much love in this music that the only way to truly feel it is to try and play it yourself, and realising that the only way to truly express to others is by sharing it through performance
RIP to this beautiful musician. Will forever appreciate listening -
Thanks for sharing.
Sentiremos saudades Chick 😢. Seu legado estará sempre em nossos corações e ouvidos..
Just when i think I've heard the best from Chick.....he tops it. Wow. And, Marcus Gilmor?!....wow, I love the way he speaks through his kit, effortlessly.
on my job in a second hand store one of Mr. Corea's albums was purchased. The buyer raved his skills and talent...so here I am... IN AWE...how awesome!! I love this!
