    DISCLAIMERS ON FORMATS COVERED:
    Notice I said POPULAR formats, meaning a format where there is a significant amount of people who compete in it for tournaments and so on and so forth. Now Popular does not mean official even though two of the formats I will be covering were official formats being Japan Nintendo Cup and VGC, but it is an indicator of what a good portion of competitive players thought was “optimal” at the time. Also sometimes the Pokemon Battle Historia doesn't provide enough information to talk about certain Pokemon so I add Smogon analysis to make sense of it. This is pretty rare though.
    To the people asking why I don't cover Smogon Singles for Gens 1 and 2: It wouldn't really be a history video if I covered those because online Smogon gen 1 meta to my knowledge wasn't actually played until late 2000s. I wanted to cover tournaments/competitive battling that was actually played during the early years of Pokemon (late 90s).
    To the people asking why I cover Smogon at all for singles: To my knowledge, Smogon was the most popular format for Gens 3-5 and held a number of tournaments throughout the years. As for Gen 6, I am not covering Battle Spot Singles because there is more information and explanations about sets being used relative to their own meta on Smogon. In other words, there are few written analyses about Battle Spot Pokemon besides the Top tiers and I would like to avoid theorycrafting because it may have a hint of bias (though I theorycraft if I REALLY couldn't find information on a certain Pokemon). The keyword here is explanations. Though I did find statistics of most Pokemon used and most moves used, there wasn't really any explanations on why. Also the few Pokemon I did find analysis of for Top Tier Battle Spot Singles had very similar move sets to the Smogon OU sets anyway.
    For the record, I do not care what rules or formats people play their battles by nor am I saying these formats are the only formats that should be played. The way you play Pokemon is between you and your opponent and I will not fault you for using evasion or whatever, I just like examining popular tournament formats.

    The Aron line seems to be more intended to be a nigh-unstoppable tank for much of the _single player_ journey rather than competitive. The loads of Normal type moves you'll face makes its Steel/Rock typing, along with its extreme Defense stat, absolutely ideal for that purpose.

    When you think about it, Aggron is one of the healthiest Pokemons in terms of game design :
    He's an educative pokémon, as a concept (reminds me of HunterXhunter's Greed Island)
    Not only does he have this typical huge gap between Def and SpeDef that makes you realize about physical and special moves when you're a noob, but his weaknesses are doubled so that you basically have to hit a weak spot in order to beat him, which forces you to search for the weak spots and thus get smarter about the game !
    We need more things like that to encourage casual players towards competitive play.

Two powerful Pokémon used by the champion who’s first forms were found hidden in cave basement levels and were supposed to be early game investment Pokémon who both grew up for great power late game, but then they put their NFEs in victory road or close by so you just caught it there and didn’t have to bother with the other cave. I’m a little salty they gutted the gimmick but I’m also not complaining about free garchomp/aggron for the elite 4.

    To this day, mega aggron is still one of my favorites. I'm probably in the minority, but I prefer beefing up his physical defense up to 252 ev's, along with his HP. He can tank just about any hit well, regardless if it's super effective or not. I like to combo him with sylveon, building the sylveon up for special defense to allow swaps between the two, using wish/heal bell, and allowing both to cover one another's weaknesses. It also allowed me to cause opponents to second guess using poison moves on sylveon, as swapping back to aggron would result in no damage, making them overall a decent pair together.

    Poor aggron, being a rock steel type really hurts, and if you aren't named Stakataka you are in NU or PU. Having only above average atk and high HP can't distract you from the fact that he is weak to almost every Mon in the OU metagame. (Greninja, LANDO, Keldeo, etc.) But it still was decent in the lower tiers being an offensive rocker or a choice band abuser. Its mega did save it with a great ability AND removing the terrible rock type it had... I wish they did that in the beginning tbh.

      I think the reason why Staka is in RU is because it has a strong niche in trick room teams. Even when it was in UU, it has a very strong base attack and defense which let's it hold a lot of common threats in early USUM. However due to him not being able to break waters/ground types which is common is balanced teams, he dropped in usage and is in RU. And there he is a havoc. I think that aagron can work in some trick room teams but then why not just use staka

    Mega Aggron is one of my favorite megas because of my memories using it in gen 7 UU. That team was one of my favorites. Not the most viable, but the most fun. It featured heavy slam-EQ- rest talk M Aggron, special defense Togekiss with both wish to heal in a pinch, and heal bell to wake up Aggron after a sleep talk. Another wacky set was a Zoroark pretending to be Chanderlure and spamming specs flamethrowers and trick, and since my Chandelure was scarfed and also had trick, it made for some serious mind games.

    Generation 8 Update.
    Aggron's Mega is gone and it dropped all the way down to PU where its one of the best in the tier. Despite a new tool in Body Press, it doesn't use it all that much. It just Choice Bands and bashes everything to death with Head Smash. Common targets are Charizard, Ribombee, and Galarian Articuno.
    For the first time however, Aggron became specially defensive. By beefing up its Special Defense, it can sponge hit from the special attackers and scare them away. Aggron is actually pretty good in PU.

  • @determineddaaf3
    @determineddaaf3 Před 5 lety +49

    The rock type should get a recovery move, it's by far the worst type right now and it would really help some of the rock types. But it is realistic that it doesn't. I mean look at real life rocks, when a piece breaks of you'll have to melt the entire rock to get it on again...

      Not really, the Ice type is the worst

    • @determineddaaf3
      @determineddaaf3 Před 5 lety +20

      @@kazoorion7993 Opinions differ, but the ice type is only horrible defensively, it's offense and attacks are actually quite good.
      The rock type has bad weaknesses and a couple of resistances that don't matter much, it's moves (except for stealth rocks, but other types can use that as well) are bad with the ones with good or even just okay power having low accuracy. The amount of types it's good against is actually okay, but that doesn't matter when none of your moves can hit the target in the first place.

    • @kazoorion7993
      @kazoorion7993 Před 5 lety +5

      Really sherlock? I already know that. That was why I was disagreeing with you.
      Back to the topic, the reason why I consider the Ice type to be the worst It is because it is one of the most fragile types, it is only resistant to attacks of its own type, if a Pokemon has the Ice type as their secondary type, then it can have a lot of weaknesses, including 4x. It is needless to say that the majority of pokemons of this type tends to be quite slow, they lack moves that raise their stats, added to the fact they have low or decent offensive states, and too many weaknesses making it a really weak type, and those who are quick, still have low attack and can't raise their low offensive stats. The only Ice Pokemon that are actually strong are Kyurem, Weavile, Cloyster and Mamoswine, since Kyurem can be used in the Overused category as it's black form, just in Ubers with it's white form, Weavile is a fast attacking mon that can increase it's attack with Sword Dance, Cloyster has Shell Smash, Skill Link and can be a mix fast attacker and Mamoswine has a decent resistence and one of the most powerful Ice Shard. It also has some underrated decent mons like Lapras, Mega Abomasnow and even Mega Glalie, not even their inmunity to being frozen save them because there aren't any attack that will just freeze the opponent and those who already exist has low chances.
      Another bad thing is it's weather Hail, meaning that if you use a Pokemon like Abomasnow or any Ice mon that triggers hail, you're forced to just use Ice mons or having a non-ice mon that holds Leftovers to overcome the damage, because no other type are inmune to hail other than the Ice mons themselves since at least the Sandstorm prevents damage to Rock, Ground and Steel types as well as boosting the Sp. defense of Rock mons by a 50%, but Hail doesn't boost any stat to the ice mons and just two attacks are boosted with the Hail and they are Blizzard with it's accuracy being boosted and Weather Ball becomes Ice type but Wheather ball isn't seen in the current competitive, they don't even have good abilities that could benefit them with Hail, because Ice Body just doesn't heal you enough HP and Snow Cloak doesn't boost your evasion compared to Minimise, they should made Hail to boost the Sp defense or Attack AND Sp. Attack by 50% to make up for all the cons the Ice type has, or make them resistent to Fire moves. The ONLY actual useful the ice type is, is for offensive, because it's the most used to beat Dragon mons with Ice beam, but most of the Pokemon can learn this attack without being as weak as the Ice type mons, like most of the Water type mons.

    Ah, HERE we go.. I am now content.
    Aggron's always been niche, I'll definitely agree on that, but there's really no arguing with that head smash.. by which I mean *don't* argue with that head smash because unless you're rolling a tank to hell, you will regret. Add in the rock polish and type coverage it has (seriously, go look at the moveset on this monster, it's nuts. He glossed over Ice Beam, why does it even learn Ice Beam? And that's just barely scratching the surface.) and sure, it's probably not winning VGC, but you'll dominate the games in general pretty well when you run it. It's practically a staple by endgame when I'm running it, and far from a slouch in that department, too.
    Though I don't actually like the Mega's design much.

    Aggron is my number one favorite pokemon. My first pokemon I owned was an Aron that my older sister caught with me teaching me how to catch pokemon. I held on to that Aggron for years and years, got it transferred to Soul Silver then.... lost that game at a hotel. I had every contest ribbon, every obtainable 4th gen ribbon for it, all of the elite 4's completed with it, and was a monster at defeating Red atop mt. Silver. When I get my urge to go back into competitive play the first mon I think of using is Aggron even though it is rough to build for.
    I'll always miss you, Dino Dude.
