Hygge, I would define as a combination of
    1. that cozy feeling you get when you've been cold all day and finally get warm.
    2. chilling at home with a good book/movie/game, or friends.
    3. just feeling good/content/satisfied about life in general.
    4. leaving worries for another time.
Any Danes got a better way to describe it..?
Hygge is like the Matrix; You can't really be told what it is, you have to experience it. :P

'Hygge' can also be experienced at a party for example! It's really just that feeling of being comfortable and content with where you are, what you're doing and the people you're with; of feeling welcome and welcoming others in that moment😊

"Hygge" covers a lot of things. Be together with people or on your own.
Picture this: You're sitting in your favorite chair by the fireplace. Maybe having your favorite hot drink. (coffee, tea, coco etc.) and just enjoying the moment. Reading the paper, perhaps, playing with a deck of cards. Sewing, knitting....
Together, it could be playing a boardgame of some kind. One that makes the rest of you laugh together, or make you think a bit and challenge your knowledge...

Hygge is a state of mind then. The Chinese say be a good Confucian while you are out in public but be a good Taoist when you are home. Basically, pay attention to how you interact with others in public and be at peace, be calm, be one with nature and at ease when at home.

The Ikea thing is sort of funny because they're mainly so popular thanks to Scandinavian (including Danish) design. A lot of that minimalist stuff you see in their stores is basically cheap versions of Danish and Swedish designs. If you actually wanted the "real" thing, you'd be paying like $5000 for a chair etc.
So yeah, Ikea has a big influence but not really by "inventing" anything.. But by making a certain style affordable. :P

"Hygge" just means "cozyness". It is not just Danish, it is Norwegian too, only we use the word "kose", "Kom, nå skal vi kose oss", "Come, now we'll cozy up". We also often use the words "fredagskos" (= fredagstaco, Friday taco) and "lørdagskos" ("Saturday cozyness") as we usually make some favorite food these two days and people spend time with their family and friends. Much due to the climate, I guess, and during winter, such activities get very important for people in this part of the world.
