  • While many people go to Siem Reap to visit Angkor Wat, no trip would be complete without a visit to The Bayon, which is part of the Angkor Thom temple complex. The complex is almost 1,000 years old and is known for its many gigantic smiling stone faces and for its bas reliefs. It was voted the #1 attraction in Siem Reap on TripAdvisor. My visit here is one I will always remember.

Revealed? Most Khmer I know understand that the Khmer Empire was started by hindus, Jayavarman II was a Shivist(sp), and much later adopted Buddhism. It's common knowledge, has been for over 50 years.

We must remember that the Khmer society was completely destroyed about 40 years ago. Education is not widespread, and higher education is down right rare. Most of the population is just happy the Khmer Rouge is gone and don't think beyond those times.

It is Buddhist temple first and foremost. Brahma is an important diety in Buddhism as well as Hinduism. His image made it easier to unite both Buddhist and Hindu believers. For primary Hindu temple, there is usually at least giant statue of Vishnu or Shiva.

@@Sahil-dz5ur There are over a thousand temples in the area. Over 1 thousands Lingas are in Phnom Kulen. There are temples built by Buddhist kings and Hindu kings. There is a giant Shiva statue in Koh Ker and a giant Vishnu Statue in Angkor Wat in their center respectively. (Built by Hindu Kings) Bayon had giant Brahma statues and a Buddha Statue in its center instead (Built by a Buddhist King). There are attempts of conversion by Hindu fanatics after his death which is unsuccessful. Angkor Wat slowly "converted" because as the populace became more Buddhists, Buddha statues were put there. The Hindu statues remained untouched. Again, you people clearly never been there.
Most of the wall carvings of the Buddhas from those times is found on the Bayon. They are connected to the other bas reliefs of the people' s lives, the armies and the dieties, which was the orginal parts of the temple and is difficult to modify. Bayon is a state temple made for unifying the populace. Since the populace are a hybrid of hindus and buddhists, icons of both religions are found there. Other state temples are similar. The king as the chief decision maker always want his prefered religion, to take precedents.

First & foremost It Is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Brahma who has 4 faces that gaze 4 different directions - very obvious considering it is the main architectural feature - the carvings of Buddha found there are small & of little significance (some believed were carved at a later date when Buddhism became more prevalent) compared to the megalithic proportions of the faces of Brahma - something that the Cambodians don’t tell others of for obvious reasons, but anybody with a little learning/understanding can easily work out🤨

This temple is Brahma Hindu temple intially the faces that you see from 4 sites is Brahma not Buddha, Buddha will not wear tall kreedham or tall hat, Buddhist believe in simplicity so the faces is wearing ornaments and big earrings clearly indicating it was initially built for purpose for Brahma and after few years where the Buddhist been introduced it was changed as Buddhist temple. This place is sacred as Angkor wat as well but the king Jayavarman as a great vision once. Hindu or buddist is not a important take the good and leave the bad.

this is a hindu temple and dedicated to lord shiva.. in hindu tradition brahma worship is prohibited.. i.e. there is only one or two temple r there in india dedicated to brahma. the faces on the temple tower are not of brahma. brahma have 4 faces but shiva the mahadeva cut of one of them so brahma shows with three faces... the second and most importatnt thing is that according to hindu icongraphy brahma always shown with beard.. here all faces are beardless. so it is not of brahma.. you can see there is a third eye on forehead of the stone face. that is a biggest sign of hindus supreme god i. e. mahadeva.. from jayvarman 1 there is big tradition of shiva worship in combodia.. from petra to shreelanka via combodia, vietenam, indonesia, india lots of country there is shiva worship is prime.. before ad and it started receding after 8 th century
