Ta Prohm’s haunting ruins are also a 1,000-year-old climate change warning

- The temple was built in 1186, but has since merged with the jungle.

FYI: the bridge that "swayed with the wind" did fall down.
+Graham Jenson indeed!
Have to sway *better with the wind
+Graham Jenson All modern bridges sway with the wind. The problem was that bridge was not design to. Hence the nature overcome theme. Hence falling down.
+Graham Jenson They didn't know about resonance therefore didn't investigate the resonant frequency of the bridge, which happened to be matched by the wind and the rest is history. Thanks to Tacoma Narrows, resonance is something civil engineers learn about quite early.
+reaz mohmed According to Wikipedia it was not resonant frequency that caused the collapse (which I also was taught) but that the bridge didnt let the wind through the structure, causing lots of force en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tacoma_Narrows_Bridge_(1940)
It always amaze me how fragile our reality is.

+retroknuckles ME TOO

Other historians suspect a connection with the kings' adoption of Theravada Buddhism: they were therefore no longer considered "devarajas", and there was no need to erect huge temples to them, or rather to the gods under whose protection they stood. The retreat from the concept of the devaraja may also have led to a loss of royal authority and thereby to a lack of workers. The water-management apparatus also degenerated, meaning that harvests were reduced by floods or drought. While previously three rice harvests per year were possible - a substantial contribution to the prosperity and power of Kambuja - the declining harvests further weakened the empire. Not to mention the Bubonic plague hit around this time. There are a ton of factors to why the Khmer Empire failed and it should lead as an example but it doesn't really represent the effects of climate change that well.
+Granite I must admit I did find the link between what happened to that civilisation and climate change a bit weak. Floods and droughts may also be caused by inter-annual variations that do not necessarily reflect climate change. Thanks for your further explanations, that was really interesting!
you can read more or come and research this more and more in angkor wat temple
what i know because situation in country and 1 more point by War between other tribal Khmer empire that under control fight back to khmer empire.

+Chhemsok samnang i cringe at the way he pronounced "Khmer"
Haha
At least we understand him
+Chhemsok samnang lol yea and when people pronounce Angkor Thom as Angkor "Tom".
+Michael Sórm LOL 😅
:')
You guys and "in a nutshell" should do a cross over
I agree wholeheartedly, the two both release videos that are put together extremely well.
I like how broad the topics of these videos are. Good stuff all around
I'm gonna be pedantic: Khmer is pronounced "k-MAI" in the Khmer language or, for English speakers, kuh-MAIR, because of the roman spelling/American accent. It is never pronounced kemer, as the narrator does here.
That's not how it's pronounced. English doesn't have the syllable that we use. Therefore, Kuh-mair is as close as they can get! (:
maybe k-m-a-e would be a better more accurate
Thank you! I lived in Cambodia for 2 years and that was killing me😅
Khmer is Cambodian. We need to protect those temples 😔 That's my culture ❤
He was a hindu king 😊😁
Khmer is Cambodian??? Does that make any sense?
Danissa Irwin yes sir. Google it!!
Brian Irwin it cambodia but some people call it khmer
Brian Irwin People lives in Cambodia called Khmer
This is such a Vox hidden gem.
The beauty of nature taking back that which man has built. When I look at this place I think it is more lovely now with the huge trees and massive amount of vegetation than it was new and filled with inhabitants.
Thank you.
Its more beautiful in person because of the parrots chirping. It sounds like you're in a jungle.
Just found this out and gosh it is a great video. Thank you.
I'm Cambodian great to hear from you.
"nature eats what we build"
Beautiful word choice. I think Im going to write that down and put it on my wall to remember. Great video!
Very cool. Excellent work, Vox
That was such a great video. Beautifully narrated and great information...thank you :)

Nathan Warrington French people helped Cambodia a lot.
amazing place, i visited Siem reap in Cambodia a few months ago. made a lasting impression that i will never forgoet
This one was well done. I thought it might spark controversy in the comments when I saw the title, but it does a good job of patiently explaining it's point.
visit there many times .. but can't stake enough of it.
Just visited Angkor wat, ta prohm and other temples in the Angkor archeological park. In one temple you see huge detailed stone cravings of everyday life of the Khmer people. Merchants selling goods on markets, kids playing with dogs in small alleys, kings and queens watching dance performances. One place was dedicated for huge festivities that could hold up to a million people with a big central stage. Now it’s like you see in the video, a mysterious place reclaimed by the jungle - like from a fairytale. Seriously one of the most incredible things I have ever seen.
Been here last July and it's fascinating. ❤ A day pass is not enough to explore all the temples.
Great video Vox! Quality's gone way up in the past while, keep it up :)
You guys are just awesome
This is so beautiful.
Most underrated Vox video.
i appreciate the informative nature of this video, but yikes @ that pronunciation

Awesome video

I love vox videos
Wow, Ta Prohm is so enchanting and beautiful
Great video!!! I only thought that more awe should be added when speaking about these water works - its WAYYY more complicated and advanced than how it sounded... although you did have some images.. it sort of flattens the mystery THAT IS
good video. will be on Reddit soon I'm sure
The bridge shown was over the Tacoma Narrows. That bridge was nicknamed Galloping Gerty. It did not collapse due to weather. It collapsed because it was unable to withstand the winds that sometimes blow through the Narrows.
isn't the wind considered weather?
Beautiful.
I'm from Cambodia and it makes me sad to think that one day, all these temples that we built would eventually collapse just like some few temples already
Эти грандиозные сооружение построили не вы, а великие люди прошлой цивилизации. То была совершенно другая раса и культура.
Why will it collapse, we Hindus in India still can make and renovate such temples even after 1000yers of islamic colonisation, Indian government is renovating angkor wat, temples in Thailand, Vietnam and other southeast Asian countries
Amazing Angkor !
The highlighting was really bad. He went way too fast and missed most of the letters.
Angkor Wat should have been one of the official 7 wonders of the world! #New7Wonders
Much, much superior to the uninspiring and insipid Christ the Redeemer statue in Brazil.
Wait, it's not?
Sameer N wow that's surprising. And Angkor Wat was in the 7 wonders right?
@@lethearith It was among the 21 semi finalists but never made the final 7
Nice Video

Fascinating
I built Angkor Wat in Civ 5 lol.

really moving
*It was ruined and submerged by very long heavy rains which flooded the city and the surroundings for so long that they abandoned it because they lost hope for not knowing when the high-rise flooded water would go away.*
ayyy khmer represent
Good video about Khmer Temples. Climate change may be one of many factors that contributed to the decline of my Khmer Empire. We used to learn other factors at school such as war with Thailand and Champa and internal conflict between the Khmer kings that led to the fall of the Khmer empire. Religion change may be another case, but I believe it is highly unlikely due to the fact that Buddhism had been in Cambodia and followed by Khmer Kings in pre and during Angkor period since the 2nd A.D. For example, in the 2nd A.D, the Khmer Capital was located in Phnom Da, Angkor Borey, (Nokor Phnom period) which is now in Takeo province and many stone carvings were found to be written in two languages; Sanskrit and Khmer worshiping both Hindu and Buddhism. The most famous Khmer king, king Jayavaraman the VII was also a Buddhist, yet he built many temples and his compared to his predecessors. His land was also huge. In addition, Bayon is a Buddhist temple that built in the Angkorian period by the Jayavaraman. Well, we will find new things as more information emerges and technologies are advancing. Cheers.
Interesting video.
It is beautiful clip
The name of the music is wrong, the name is Noctilucent - The Illuminated Diary
