As the city crumbled around him, Governor Henson hurried to the spaceport. He dragged his bulbous body along with the odious tapestry and bling that adorned it.
"Hurry, you fools!" he shouted at the serfs behind him. They carried his prized collections of wines and golden chronometers.
A piece of rockcrete fell from the ornate ceiling and onto the people in the hall. Henson cared not. He felt no pity for them. If anything, he felt anger. Anger that his priceless cloak was now ruined by dust and blood.
"Useless," he hissed as he kept running.
Soon, he reached the spaceport. But it was strangely empty. Only one dark green Thunderhawk was left and it was taking off.
"Wait!" he shouted, "Hold it! Stop!"
The ship didn't stop. It did, however, slow down. Its back end opened as the pilot rotated the large vessel. Henson saw people inside. Peasants. Low lives. Beggars, prostitutes, and low-ranking guards. And one other far larger figure.
"Space marine!" the governor yelled as he wheezed for air, "Lower the ship! The xenos are nearly here!"
The Astarte didn't flinch. The Thunderhawk slowly began ascending and its back end was closing.
"What do you think you're doing?! Get back here and do your duty!"
"We are doing our duty, governor," the marine said calmly, "The people are safe. Our mission is complete."
"You cannot be serious! What about me!?"
Just before the Thunderhawk's doors closed, the marine turned and gave one last glance at Henson.
"What about you?" he said coldly.
The vessel left. The force of its engines pushed the bulbous governor onto his back. His robes were now soaked in rainwater and blood.
"Get back here!" he shouted at the top of his lungs, "Get back here you damned-"
A low growl stole his words from his throat. Slowly, Henson turned around and saw a pair of red eyes staring at him from the darkness. Then another pair. Then another and then another. And then...
    "No."
... the empty streets of the dead city were filled with one final scream.

Reminds me of an Ultramarine novel of a tyrannid invasion. A selfish wealthy man deactivated part of the city's AA guns so his ship could escape. Just at that moment the Ultramarine captain and a squad in a Thunderhawk were flying back while being chased by a massive swarm of gargoyles. The SM pilot was wondering why the AA guns weren't firing then quickly banked to avoid the rich ahole's ship. That ship then flew head-first into the gargoyles. The cockpit canopy was shattered, the pilot torn apart in seconds and a mass of claws and flesh came scrambling down the cabin towards the guy.
He didn't even have time to scream as his ship plummeted down and laughably crashed into one of his own factory districts.
Always loved that moment of instant karma.

He had hid behind his walls, his towers, and his spires. He had hid behind his men and his entourage and his status. At first, he had distance. Even the largest of mountains were small if viewed from afar. How small the Space Marines seemed then. They were few. His men were many. And even the largest of mountains would fall to a thousand charges.
How large, then, did the Space Marine in front of him seem. And he remembered the litanies and prayers from his childhood, long ago, long before his ascension. They were not just 'Space Marines'. They were not merely genetically modified transhuman supersoldiers. No. They were His Angels. And they brought death.
The yellow visor was silent. His Chapter was fire clad, and his visor brought calm light. But there was no warmth today. Not from the Salamanders, not from his people, not toward him. The governor, he who proclaimed himself lord of the land, who saw his authority above that of the Adeptus Astartes, felt small then.
His guards had thrown down their arms, crying and weeping in regret. Those who had been careless enough to fire upon the approaching party by the governor's words were cut down without mercy, a far cry from the gentleness the previous party displayed during their first interaction. The rest of the nobles, their sharp tongues and poison spit lost in their throats, some voiding their bowels, their so called dignity abandoned, huddled fearfully in their corners.
Next to the Space Marine was a girl. Some random girl from some poor sector of the world, dirty, raggaed... enraged. Her name was Stephanie, a nobody, and yet something allowed her to not only stand beside one of the Emperor's own with her back straight, and also allowed her to carry the heavy, weighted standard of the Second Company without question.
    -
When there was no response on the Vox and the Augur scans returned null results for life signals, they had felt saddened but understanding. Space Marines fought. Space Marines died. So long as they had accomplished their duties.
But the air was different. There was no welcoming party to greet them, the gate firmly closed, the bodies of their brothers strewn about like garbage. When they entered the walls, they saw a flood of people kneeling around a girl, the girl kneeing around a flag. A standard. Their Standard.
There was confusion, of course, and mistrust, for a Standard should stay with those that had carried it into battle, always. But there were always exceptions. The girl, (Stephanie, my Lord, she said through tears), was questioned and a clear picture was borne. One of cowardness. Of greed. Of a man that did not know his place.
And the simmering flames of sadness rose to an inferno of rage.
    -
Salamanders. They who embodied the warmth of fire, the hope it represented. A campfire in the darkness of void, welcome to all who make seek asylum from the horrors beyond. But fire was dual visaged. Fire was not just for heat or for power. Fire burned. Fire raged.
    Fire represented the Emperor's Light.
    The Emperor's Light was hope.
    The Emperor's Light was Wrath.
"I-" the governor tried, stammering. "I-"
"For the lives you have acosted," the Captain said, and he was referring to the civilians that had perished outside those walls; he would morn his brothers separate, for they died a warrior's death. "For the dishonor you sow at the highest levels. In the Emperor's name, and in that of our Father, Vulkan, I sentence you to death."
    "W-wai-ahhhh~!"
The governor, so fanciful of his geothermal baths, bathed down in the purest of flames: promethium, which cleanses all.
The body fell, charring and smoking, still wreathed in holy fire. The prayers loudened. As if the Emperor would forgive them for their sins.
The Captain knelt down, one hand on Stephanie's shoulders. "You have the spirit of a dragon," he whispered. "Thank you for keeping this safe." He took the banner's staff into his hands. "My brother would be proud."
Stephanie nodded as the Salamander rose. Then they turned and left.
An in their smouldering hearts echoed one word:
    Fools.

I read many comments which say the Salamanders' sacrifice was a waste. Why to throw away valuable equipment, relics and whatnot.
Well, here's why: every Space Marine chapter has a different combat doctrine. The Templars would have used the civilians as improvised close combat weapons if they would have ran out of ammo.
Blood Angels would either disregard civvies or request them to fight by their side...until the black rage hits in, then everyone becomes a target.
Raven Guard would try to instruct them to fight the enemy.
Salamanders on the other hand do not view Imperial citizens as resources. They treat humans as the future of the Imperium. In the eyes of a Salamander, that little girl might become a great leader, a Canoness, or maybe a living saint somewhere along her life. One of the women could give birth to the next great hero of the Imperium. A guardsman's life spared is a dead enemy in the next battle.
That is why they are willing to give their lives, sacrifice a dreadnought, potentially losing irreplaceable relics and weapons. Might seem like a waste. But a handful of space marines in return for the future of the Imperium is well worth it in their eyes.

In my final hour, in my darkest moment, when the night surrounds me and the teeth and claws anticipate my flesh, I only raise my head to ask one last time, give me the strength to save one more my Lord, give me the opportunity to bring them closer to you...at the cost of my life, at the cost of everything!

To be fair they barely got civilians inside in time. Still that is pretty brave..or foolish from the governor. There might be some heavy talks when rest of the chapter arrives

They mentioned the rest of the fleet coming meaning there is an above zero percent chance of the governor getting pasted by a space marine or executed for heresy due to flipping of the emperors angles.

I wish someone would make a comic like this, only dedicated to honoring the sacrifices of the Lamenters Chapter, such as their heroic actions during the Siege of Corillia or the liberation of Slaughterhouse III....oh well, time to go head over to A Vox in the Void and destroy my feels for a second time today

God damn it... It's my favorite comic from WH40k community. I literally tear up when Zul'ra called girl by her name. Some folks like to argue, that Salamanders are no better than other Space Marines. I know, they did and probably are still doing horrible things. But, the difference is, when given a chance, Salamanders will act like real heroes. Brother Gora is perfect exaple of that. You think, that dreadnoughts from chapters, would give a shit about civilians? To step and block gates, with their body? No. To remember the name, of one, young girl and give her company standard? No. Salamanders are the real protectors of humanity in grimdark 40th millenium
(Yes, I'm fanboying a little, how did you know? Also: Gora is very similiar to polish "góra" which means "mountain".)
