"My backstop is a mountain". I love it.
Underwood Extreme Defender in all calibers are #1 to my opinion.
The jury is in and the choice is clear; these fluted Underwood Xtreme Defenders are clearly superior to any JHP on all fronts.
For bear defense penetration is king. 115gr fluted all day. If you want a spicy carry round the 150gr JHP are nasty AF. Use case
I can't think of a single complaint I've had with Underwood ammo, they just make quality stuff
Yep, they load it right.😎👍
The controlled chaos thing was definitely a waste of time but apart from that iv had no complaints
I haven't had a single problem with any Underwood product in my .380 EZ. I like the coated hardcast 100 gr, the Extreme Defenders and the Extreme Penetrators. In that order.
You get what you pay for.
Price is good I bought a bunch of coated hardcast 200 gr in 40 for a buck each , nickle case and nearly 1020 fps from 4.5.
Holy cow the extreme defenders are really on another level compared to JHP's
Yeah, they never fail to impress.😎👍
Been using 174gr maximum expansion and 120gr xtreme defender in my G-21, really like the Underwood ammo.
Underwood seems to have their R&D department making some good, easy to get off the shelf stuff that actually performs pretty good. That Platinum Xtreme Defender is what a 10mm should perform like. Thanks for another great test!
Yessir. It's expensive but it's definitely miles above most common 10mm.
@@ToolsandTargets Exactly man!!!! And this is why i've stocked up on tons of ammo from Underwood from 9mm (some of it in its "+P" variant), .357 Magnum, .44 Magnum, and .460 Magnum. Their .44 Magnum rounds (in particular) are super-fuckin-spicy, as my Desert Eagle has literally cycled each and every round without a single malfunction or hiccup. and while my Ruger GP100 pretty much takes any and all .357 Magnum cartridges, but it seems to REALLY like the ones from Underwood the best, as it's a little more powerful and more accurate.
Its actually Lehigh Ammo. They just provide the powder and casings and then resell in their boxes.
@@dukewellington7050 are you saying Lehigh does all the work using powder provided by Underwood, or Underwood loads with Lehigh bullets?
Wilson combat bought Lehigh defense which makes the extreme defense bullets. Of course the prices went up cuz Bill Wilson is a scoundrel. Still love underwood though.
😎👍
Wow that Extreme Defender blasted a cave through the gel. It almost distracted me from the performance of the Nosler which was fantastic. Great test. 👏👏
🇺🇸👊
😂😂😂 Yeah, definitely some good stuff.😎👍
The Phillips screwdriver tip creates a vortex. Very similar to where you drain your kitchen sink and water swirls around the drain as it goes down the drain. Another example is if you were baking a cake and you use the beaters and they swirl around in the batter the batter will automatically be slung to the sides of the ball in the center is empty. That’s another created vortex. The ball is generally solid copper, and it creates a larger hole than almost any hollow point mainly because of the Vortx it creates. I have researched the Phillips screwdriver, bullet, and what it does makes a 380 as effective as a 9 mm and a 9 mm as effective as a 45. Oh, that is on wound diameter. If the Phillips screwdriver gets anywhere near the heart, it will blow the heart up. I use it on all of my carry handguns. I got pretty accurate to. Right now I am in search of the same cartridge and bullet shape for my 38 special snubnose. However, you performed a great demonstration and I enjoy watching you whenever you are on the air. Keep up the good work I especially love your southern accent. It is beautiful.
Virginian! 🇺🇸
That extreme defender is NASTY!! Great job on the test Tools
Yessir. Appreciate that!😎👊
UNDERWOOD IS AWESOME ... !!!!! THANK YOU FOR A GREAT VIDEO TOOL ...!!! DOUBLE G. HERE ..!!!!!
Thank you sir!😎👊
...Sees 10mm thumbnail, instantly must watch
Some good ones this time.😎👍
I saw some other flutet ammo on your channel. But this platinum rounds impressed me the most.
I'm in the process of converting my carry ammo to the Xtreme Defenders. I like them especially in my 1911's, which have a reputation of not always reliably cycling JHP's. I've been carrying them in my .38 Super 1911 for a few weeks now and after shooting a few boxes, am completely confident that they will do their job if I do mine. Gonna order a few 9mm boxes of it soon for my other carry guns.
You always know what you're gonna get with em.😎👍
The Underwood is a performer for sure, both rounds. Thanks for the video and have a great weekend 😊.
Appreciate that. Have a great weekend !
My 10mm 1911 doesn't like the plain copper xtreme defenders so I'll definitely give these a try. Those bullets are awesome for a copper solid. The way the smoke straight through level 3A soft panels definitely makes them a good projectiles keep on hand, and they seem to do a good amount of damage with the cavitation they create.
Ahh good to know. I don't have a 1911 in 10mm. Hopefully they make a difference.😎👍
Damn... those extreme defenders (and penetrators) are awesome rounds.
They really are.😎👍
Good test Tools. Finally we see a 10mm round that performs like a 10mm. I'd take the hollow point round if I had a 10mm, unless you're going up against a hard barrier then it's the extreme defender. Keep up the good work Tools. We appreciate all you do.
Be vigilant and always be safe my friend.
Thank you sir. Definitely nice to get what you pay for.😎👍
Double Tap has some good 10mm loads too
Another great test and great job keep them coming 👍
Thank you sir. Appreciate that.😎👊
Excellent content! You are my go to for 10mm data and review. Thank you, brother 🙏🏿🇺🇸
Underwood makes great ammo. Those extreme defenders are really impressive. Great job, buddy. Awesome video, as always, brother.
Thank you sir. Good to get what you pay for.😎👍
I love your videos, man....especially all the 10mm testing you do. Thanks!
Great report Tools! Results like you demonstrate with these two Underwood ammo choices, is what other ammo manufacturers should be striving for in 10MM defensive rounds.
Thank you sir. Good to see a few loading it right.😎👍
Another great miniature ammo documentary ! Note that Underwood rounds always perform as well or better than comparable loadings from more expensive competitors.
Thank you sir. Underwood outperforms most companies these days it seems.😎👍
I went with this ammunition for my .380acp in standard pressure, since 380+P is not SAMI specs AND not recommended for most .380's. (which I would love to see you test)
380 ACP 68GR. XTREME DEFENDER PLATINUM EDITION SOLID MONOLITHIC HUNTING & SELF DEFENSE AMMO. I went with this one because it should penetrate enough; and the shape of the bullet causes slightly more disruption than a round nose or flat nose in .380.
Another great test Tools ! 10mm is a beast and id carry both rounds , if i had to pick id go with the holler point because it expands huge and dumps all that energy in what you're trying to stop !
Thank you sir.😎👍
Thanks for the video Tools. Love me some more jelly time. Finally a 10mm that lives up to its name. Keep up the good work.
Thank you sir. It delivered the goods.😎👊
I'll be using the Underwood XD's in my CMMG Mk10 with an 8" barrel. I expect slightly better than advertised muzzle energy. Big fan of the Lehigh monolithic projectiles.
Those are some very intimidating rounds. Thanks for the tests.
They definitely deliver some power.😎👍
I finally was able to check this one out. The video I’ve been waiting to see on the 10mm XD and even with the coating. I “still” have that Underwood 200gr XTP in my edc but have this XD in the backup mags (and XP as well). I was hoping to see the penetration end up around 18”. But 22.5” really isn’t bad either. I’d consider them fine for edc imo. Great test!
Definitely some good stuff.😎👍
What a treat. 10mm, Underwood’s and a Xtreme Defender in the mix - almost can’t beat that.
Would be interesting to see if that coating has an impact on penetration
Good stuff 😎👍
I have these in 9mm 115gr +p+ at 1300fps I think the coating is more for helping go down the barrel more cleanly. And so they can call it platinum and charge more.
@@TheSecretSantaaThe 90 +p+ is cited at 1550 fps!
I absolutely love Underwood ammo... Man they make some good stuff... Cool video Tools
Yes indeed. Thank you sir.😎👊
Awesome video man, keep up the great work!!!
Thank you sir. Appreciate that!
Nice shooting on your part !!!! Great test sir.
Appreciate that!😎👍
I love this guys' ammo testing!!!!
Appreciate that.😎👊
Nice! Now that’s what 10mm is supposed to do. Might not have hit quite what the box said but like you said their test barrel was longer. Probably 5” or 5.25”. Awesome results from both. I would pick the defenders. Over penetration isn’t a huge worry for me. Can’t wait to see what else is up your sleeve. 👍🇺🇸
Definitely some good ones here.
Those were steppin on out, Underwood doesn't elaborate on the coating, but they are approaching the .357 Magnum realm, a couple years ago I asked my bro in law if he ever knew anyone that polished each cartridge with Brasso, and he said no, I said you have now! Thanks Brian. 👊 🇺🇲

No doubt about it. 💥🐻💥
Extreme defenders are a beast 💯 The nosler 150 gr are nice👍. I would carry the extreme defenders while I'm in the streets 👏
I like the Lehigh Defense bullets. Thanks for another great vid.
Good video as always! Buddy when you don’t do ammo hunt videos I completely forget what day it is for the rest of the week.
Thank you sir.😆😆😆
There is no denying it…the 10mm is at the extreme upper end of self defense power. And again, the fluted bullets produce the awesome wound channel with DEEP penetration. I wish underwood would offer a 125 grain solid copper wadcutter at 1300 fps for the 10mm. That would be a tremendous self defense round. Great test of a great caliber.
Absolutely. Love seeing good 10mm rounds.😎👍
I load 9mm that's spicier than 125 grain @ 1300 fps.
That's only 470 ish foot pounds and that right there is the precise problem with people who advocate for 10mm or .45
This is exactly the kind the round where you use it because you like the idea of 10mm but dislike actually shooting 10mm so you go with a round that's just the power of 9mm +P but you can still tell everyone you carry 10mm.
Jokes aside ya factory loaded 9mm tops out at about 550 fpe but I would be confident in reliability loading up to 600 especially if you're using a lighter projectile like the extreme defender.
As far as 10 mm factory loads go you're looking at a grand total of like 5 rounds that surpass 9mm and only 2 of them actually break 700 fpe.
Unless your 10mm is 650 + fpe the sooner you except reality and go buy a 9mm the happier you'll be.
Of course a bigger caliber will have more stopping power but only if you actually load more powerful rounds.
Wadcutters aren't tops for cycling Semis.
1300 fps? Why on Earth would you load 10mm to such an embarrassingly slow speed for such a light weight in 10mm? 357 Sig is 200 fps faster at the same bullet weight.
@@Lexicologist1971 wadcutters don't need super high velocity to do tremendous damage. For self defense, a wadcutter with reduced muzzle blast and recoil will get the job done. It doesn't take 700+ ft. Lbs. of energy to stop a human attacker.
Both are definitely successful. I would tend to stay with traditional lead core hollow point. Good options. Thanks
For whatever reason, I like the good ol lead stuff too.🤷♂️
The underwood extreme penetrator does a heck of a job on wild hogs.
💥🐗💥
I predicted the Underwood 10mm 115 gr. would stay intact with decent penetration, but not quite as much as you demonstrated, which made me smile. I too got my Glock (model 40) for the purpose of firing genuine 10 mm power, not the watered down stuff which I can match in my Glock model 23, .40 cal. loaded with 165 gr Hornady Critical Defense rounds that break the 500 ft. lb. barrier, averaging 1175 ft./sec. So out of my 10mm anything below 650 ft. lbs isn’t necessitating my carrying a 10mm hand canon. Thus, all three 10mm mags are loaded with the Underwood Extreme Defender meat mashers in wild hog and or bear country. Thanks much.
1:47 After watching the chrono bit, i bet it wouldve met what it said on the box out of like a Glock 40 or something, but yeah cant complain either way
Underwood knockin it outta the park yet again!
Yeah, it was right there.😎👍
I just purchased my Glock 29 about 3 weeks ago and you sir are such a life saver with all your great videos! Xtreme platinum defenders are on the way! Thanks so much for all your awesome videos!!! I must confess I watch them all, even calibers I don’t own lol
Nice! Appreciate that. I was looking at an FN510 at my local shop earlier. It was real tempting. If it would have been the FDE one, I probably wouldn't have been able to resist!😆
Good test. Thanks for the video
Appreciate that!😎👊
Great work as always 👍
I rock the 115 g from underwood in my 29 EDC. Love em
Great test, I really like underwood ammo i have it in 45 cal. now i have to get some in 10mm. Great video as always.
Thank you sir. Both of these are some winners.😎👍
@@ToolsandTargets Your welcome, and yes they are.
The underwood seems to be very good ammo. Thanks for the test you do for us to compare with Tool's.
Yessir. They load some great stuff. Appreciate that!😎👍
I am usually a heavy for caliber guy and I can't remember ever being impressed with "gimmicky" rounds, but that Defender looks straight up wicked. If that is typical of their performance in high velocity handgun cartridges like the 10mm, I might have to check them out.
It is, even their 9mm and .380 seem to perform amazingly (to the point that their better penetration and impressive wound cavity make .380 seem a bit more viable as a self defence round, even in the winter etc.)
Their XD loadings are what's up. Someone who works for them said that the 68gr +P version is the one to go with. 1800fps from a 4" barrel. My 5.75" Mete SFX Pro chronographs at 1940fps. That's amazing from a handgun. You need 3A to stop it. They do amazing against animals as per reports from hunters as well.
Same here. I've been pretty impressed with these Xtreme Defenders in all the calibers I've tested. very consistent.
I carry the Xtreme Defender in all of my carry and home defense handguns. The performance is incredible, having seen the results of a 125 lb pig that was shot with a 9mm 90gr XD (after being shot in neck & killed with a 300 black out). Everything between the entrance hole and where the bullet stopped under the skin of the off shoulder was basically mush! You just can't beat performance like that!
Cheers,
jc
Underwood is the real deal. So much demand that they're out of bonded Speer Gold Dots. Don't know if they'll be back ever.
That is couple of good rounds compared to some your previous test. Thanks .
Definitely 😎👍
I'd be very happy with either of these rounds, great video T! Have a good weekend Bro.
You too, my friend!😎👊
This is what a 10mm is supposed to do 🙏🙏
Yessir.😎👍
Great video! Very impressive. Didn't know what caliber it was to you measured it.
That Underwood ammo always impresses. Thinking about ordering some of that Underwood Nosler 9mm 124+P+. Tempted to try some extra spicy ammo lol. I have some of the 90gr extreme defender, never tested it in gel, just water jugs. What's your favorite Underwood loading these days? They seem to have narrowed it down a little bit, no longer offering the Gold Dots anymore, just looks like they are using the Nosler and XTP's now and the lehigh defense projectiles.
I think their +P+ stuff is the way to go. The speed pretty much guarantees success.😎👍
BEAST
YOU ATE THE ONLY ONE THAT IVE SEEN WITH THOSE.
🔥🔥🔥
Thank you now I know what to get for my Glock 20
They both performed well.
Yessir.😎👍
I got both but i love the platinum
That XD is my choice, I want to try them on one of my junk cars, just for a science project of course.
💥🚗💥
Like those both! Thanks! Beats a 4" .357 mag.
Nice ones for sure.😎👍
Another timely and interesting test, Brian! I've wondered about the Nosler bullet since it's a bit light (and fast!) In 10mm! I suspect it might just come apart in my test medium (ziplock bags filled with water). But the performance in jelly was near perfect. I will have to check on the coating? I wonder if it's an Underwood or Lehigh applied coating? I have thought about moly plating some of the Lehigh bullets because they do corrode pretty easily. Currently I just clean them up with Tarn-x or Brasso just because I'm pretty anal about keeping my ammo looking good. It certainly doesn't make any difference in the bullets performance!
While I carry the Underwood/Lehigh Xtreme Defender, I don't have a lot of them because of the cost. So I usually keep a couple hundred rounds of Gold Dots, which are currently "unobtainium" for some reason. I'd like to get some 165 gr but they simply are not (and have not been) available. I'm going to be testing the 180 XTP, too. If I get some at a reasonable price I may pick up some WW 175 gr. Silvertips, which seem to work ok. I'd rather find some components instead of loaded ammo. Right now that seems to be Nosler and Hornady, neither of which are bonded, which is my preferred style of bullet. Thanks, Speer!
Cheers,
jc
Yeah, some of the good ol reliable components seem to have vanished.😆
Just won a gunbroker CMMG 10mm banshee fir a fantastic price. I ordered a case of 10mm 180 gr for blasting but I also got the 115 gr for home defense .
Great comparison tools 👌
Thank you sir. Always love some good 10mm.😎👍
Finally, a outstanding 10mm test and results. That’s the way 10mm ammo should perform there. I’m like you wish the all the ammo would perform like those there. When you buy a 10mm you are buying to see a difference not a watered down version. Anyway good test and commentary thanks for sharing and be safe. ⭐️⭐️🇺🇸👍
Amen to that. Thank you sir.😎👊
@@ToolsandTargets 👍🫡
I would get a 10mm if ammo companies actually loaded them to spec.
Considering buying a 10mm. After seeing good HPs like Gold dots from Underwood not performing as intended because of the velocity and them being intended for .40 cal it made me hesitant, but these solid bullets and some of the "external hollow points" may have changed my mind. They won't fall apart!
Would of been nice to see a few more FPS but can’t argue with the results as both rounds performed nicely. No problem with the jacket separation or the shards creating secondary wound channels. Probably under most situations would choose the Nosler. Thanks for the test Tools!
Great stuff.😎👍
Good show Mr. Tools
Thank you sir.😎👍
Great performance!
Yessir😎👍
I'm pretty sure I've said it before. I'll say it again: Original spec for 10mm was a 180-grain projectile fired from a 5" barrel with a 50-meter impact velocity of at least 1,000 feet per second, which gives an impact energy of 444 energy foot pounds. Any ammunition marked 10mm Auto, regardless of projectile weight, that is making around 440 energy foot pounds at 50 meters is true 10mm Auto ammo.
Muzzle velocity can give you a hint, but unless you're measuring velocities at 50 meters, you don't *really* know if it's true 10mm ammo or just .40 S&W ammo in a long case.
I think it's safe to say most people are judging muzzle energy and then doing the math from there if they're concerned about that specific standard.😎👍
I tested some of the 150 grain Underwood Noslers in Clear ballistics gel and got similar results , to much fragmentation and jacket separation for SD use IMO. Ironically I tried the 180 Grain JHP Nosler from Underwood and had consistent failure to expand/overpenetration. I wish they would get the Gold dots back in stock!
Good test .
Thank you sir.😎👍
I live on an isolated farm. I occasionally encounter wild hogs. I carry an M1 Garand (30-06 with 150 gr bullets) for my safety. Been seriously considering a 10mm caliber pistol just because it would be easier to carry and keep ready for instant deployment. I do have a.357 magnum Taurus, but hogs can be tough customers.
Considering seeing some Texas friends and going hunting. Glad to know the Garand works. Only have a 9mm for a side arm, but with a FN hard cast or an extreme penetrator +P+ (not the extreme defender) I'm thinking it'll do fine.
You can run a ar10 if you wanna keep that battle rifle caliber
Too reuse gel blocks so often you should food color dye the already shot channels in the block.
Just one drop in each hole before you start your next session so you can track the new hits.
Love all your tests.
I've been a sub for a while now.
Wish I had a yard like yours to test on.
Appreciate that.😎👊
Underwood is great stuff! Not sure about pricing in your area, but I can usually get it for a few dollars less than Buffalo Bore, and I think it's every bit as good
I've never gotten ant Buffalo Bore locally. Have to order it.😆

They keep on doing it right.😎👍
Another great jelly test Brotha ..
Thank you, my friend!
Wow that's some power.
Yeah, a ton of force is no joke.😆
those extreme defender are the best option available in places like NJ who outlaw hollowpoints
Good point.😎👍
About to order a bunch of Underwood, thoroughly convinced with their loadings.
Fantastic stuff. I need to order a few things I'm out of for testing myself.
@Tools&Targets Tools, what's your opinion on the XD +P variants of the 68gr vs. 90gr? I live in SC, so heavy clothing, save for the two weeks of winter we get, usually isn't a concern. I'm curious about the deflection potential on having to shoot into a vehicle with the lighter loading. I'm leaning towards the 68gr though for the advantages of weight reduction and extra velocity that starts to defeat some lighter body armor.
Thanks!
Thank you sir. Really do appreciate that! Have a great weekend!😎👊
@@ToolsandTargets Always glad to support your channel. Thanks for replying to my questions like you do. Have a great weekend also

Thank you sir. Never thought about it honestly.
Imma have to check that out
I love your Videos man!! Whats not to love.

Underwood and America 🇺🇸 💙 ❤️
Both did really well. That Nosler is def at its peak velocity for its hardness. Anymore expansion and it will turn inside out. 🤣🇺🇸
Yeah, it was shedding skin like a snake.💥🐍💥
brother that's pretty impressive
Yessir. Good stuff.😎👍
I love 10mm, I'm interested in seeing the underwood 100gr xtreme defender against the liberty civil defense. I have a G40 coming in on Saturday and I already have a CMMG Banshee 10mm. Going to run both cartridges this weekend and check them out. 10mm out of a PCC has become one of my favorite ways to shoot
Nice. I need to pick up a 10mm PCC of some kind.
Underwood Extreme Defender or Extreme Penetrator (380 but not in 9mm) are all I use for self-defense rounds. I do plan to try some Extreme Hunters out of my 44 mag lever gun also.
That's the way to go if you ask me.
Impressed with these Underwood ammo. Only thing for me is. I don't have a 10mm handy 🤷
Alright, looks like it’s 115 Xtreme Defenders for the woods and 155 XTPs for the city. Thank you Underwood (and thank you Mr. Tools).
I use Underwood ammo, but I carry liberty civil defense in my glock 29. It Flys at 2400 fps and has 740 fpe at the muzzle.
Question for you. As you know, Underwood stopped using the Gold Dot bullet but now they are offering XTP. Have you ever compared the XTP with the Nosler? Nosler is what I'm using now but wonder if the XTP offers any advantage over it. Thanks as always. Love your channel
Thank you sir. Appreciate that. I think either one loaded in 10mm is as good as the other of the same weight. They both get the speed they seem to like from the load.😎👍
That Nosler looked like it was pushed above it's effective velocity, that's why it shed the jacket. But still, great performance. You can't go wrong with Underwood ammo. My perfect 10mm would be Underwood with HST 180gr going at 1400 fps. Thanks for another best mm video Sir. Godspeed 💪
That would be fantastic.😎👍
It really is amazing how much better an xtp is than a Nosler projectile, I mean you can run a 155 xtp against a 155 Nosler and visual differences I don't care if they are going the same speed it seems like the NOS come apart a lot easier
Good stuff!
Appreciate you checkin it out!😎👍
Oh great report did not know about these , I'm getting on that bandwagon, beautiful. That Nosler would open up good at 150 yds still, soft lead and short upper jacket.
Yessir. Both great rounds.😎👍
Underwood makes nice stuff
