One of my favourite PF songs, never see David Gilmour play it yet his solo was fantastic! Guess he didn’t want to pay Roger the royalties! Thanks for posting.

Well, he did like >50% Roger songs on Delicate Sound of Thunder, Pulse, and his solo live albums, so I don't think royalties are the reason.

If it were me I would have changed the key to suit my own voice. I actually think Roger has an extremely passionate angsty voice and totally get that he regrets using another vocalist. When you put your heart into writing a song you kinda wanna be the one that sings it first so you can put your heart into it as you deliver it to your fans.
It's strange that you feel that you've lost something if you give a song away but feel flattered when someone else covers your version (if its a good cover of course) ;-)

Roger Waters did not sing this on the album, it was Roy Harper. This is probably why they didn't play it at concerts much or at all. There is a video with Gilmour discussing the recording and he stated Waters couldn't reach the notes needed to sing the song.

If you watched the video in full you’d see that Roy is discussed and Roger talks about the difficulty of the high notes. The video you mention of David is also on this channel.

If he said that he is surely lying. If Roger could reach those notes in 2011, he could certainly do so in 1974 (say what you want about Roger's voice, but he had an insane range in the 70s-80s). Plus there are lots of live recordings of Roger singing this song, also with Pink Floyd back in the days, and Roger did hit the notes (Gilmour on the other hand struggled with high notes).

I like the edgy, angsty attitude of Roy's vocal because it IS a pastiche -the whole thing
OUR story is a pastiche the whole song; the whole idea it's not just about advertising it's about evolution and the story we sell ourselves "in the name of progress
a deceptively deep song maybe Roger just needed to the time to grow into it👍

Surely, given the theme, it was supposed to sound "cynical" as opposed to "vulnerable"?

He was never a good singer or musician he was the driver & the writer, Gilmour and the others couldn't write to save themselves but they added the colour to his ideas, you don't have to be a great musician or a singer to write music Bob Dylan would be busking for his daily bread if you did.
