  • When you buy that bottle of Chilean red, a can of Italian crushed tomatoes, or that leg of New Zealand spring lamb, do you ever think about how it got from there to here?
    Groceries are a big part of global supply chains. Now, more than ever, airlines are a part of that chain.

There are actually more bilingual signs now here than when I first moved here. 👍 The rest of Quebec is another story...

    Edmonton International airport is not a major airport in Canada but it's turning into a hub airport for moving air shipped produce and animal products. Some produce can't be refrigerated without damage and fresh fish products. Iceland Air in particular exports a lot of fresh fish to the vast Canadian prairie supermarkets and it's all done by air cargo. Iceland Air may be a passenger airline but most of their money is made shipping fresh fish to Canadian markets.

  • @PeterPeadar
    @PeterPeadar Před 3 lety +1

    Super video! Reignited and shifted my view of produce airshipping. Another metric to consider is the nutrition per km. Why ship lettuce with low nutritional value compared to cabbage? The nutritional value should be factored into the equation of carbon footprint, in my humble opinion. You covered a considerable amount of information very well in 10 minutes! Well done!

    There may be reasons that air freight is environmentally friendlier than some alternatives, but it would be even better if the groceries traveled in electric planes. I understand that so far those are rather range limited, but the slowness relative to carbon-intensive jets might not be a significant factor. Maybe Airbus can jumpstart its hydrogen-based Zero-e program by producing some designs that target the freight market. On the other hand, maybe we should be looking at blimps and airships.

    It doesn’t make sense in today’s world to burn fuel to fly food from one side of the world to another. You can either produce locally or just change your habits a little for season food. Some may say they still want bananas in Europe in January, but come on ! fuel is in limited supply, let’s use it more wisely and keep this planet in a better condition for future generations.
