The Incredible Rise Of JetBlue: How & Why The Airline Is Winning

  • JetBlue has truly disrupted the US aviation industry over the past 20 years. It has gone from having just one Airbus A320 to a fleet of over 270 aircraft.
Is it now one of the top airlines serving the US. Later this year, the airline is planning to launch transatlantic routes with a game-changing premium product.
In an industry dominated by global behemoths with massive route networks and storied histories, how has this relatively young airline managed to succeed where many others have failed?

I flew JetBlue just twice with red-eye flight from SFO to IAD and back in 2005. The best part was the cabin crew playing UNO game in the rear gallery while many passengers slept. They let me join them and let me be the "honorary cabin crew" for a few hours. While we played the game, I pulled the snacks and drinks out of serving carts and gave them to the passengers who requested them. It was so much fun and helped pass the time quickly!

That's awesome. There is something amazing about the fact that the cabin crew were playing uno in the back. In addition the fact that they let you join them is super awesome. Passengers probably thought it was weird when another passenger brought them their snacks. :)

As a New Yorker we consider JetBlue "our hometown airline' . Their route structure is set up to serve destinations that we New Yorkers frequently fly to like Florida, major west coast cities and the Caribbean. David Neeleman is a genius he knew that New York, the largest city and metropolitan area in the US wasn't served by Southwest at the time, other than small out of the way Islip Airport on eastern Long Island. And the low cost wannabes set up by the legacy majors aren't cutting it . So he launched a Southwest for New Yorkers out of the horrible but then way underused JFK with a few little extras.

I can't say enough about how much I love JetBlue. The amazing people are the most important part of this company. I'm not a huge fan of flying but the TV's and small planes make flying easier. Another great video Simple flying! I work for one of the top Asian carriers and before that worked in Canada struggling as a young pilot while my wife is a Flight attendant with a Canadian outfit. Hands down JetBlue takes care of passengers as one of their own. We’ve flown on Standby lots even with a baby on JetBlue and did they ever take care of us. We got upgraded twice to the front of the plane, round trip from JFK to Jamaica, so we had more room and made life much easier to get on and off the plane. Before that we flew with JetBlue to St. Lucia from Seattle. I flew on confirm tickets while my wife flew standby. She ended up getting premium and I got stuck on the back. The crew found out we sat separately and offered me a upgrade so we can be together. While in JFK we didn’t make the last flight of the day to St. Lucia and spent the night in the terminal. Ground crew found out and gave us cots to lay on until early next morning. Amazing company culture that has not been seen by any other airline. I write this while in Cancun, having flown standby with two boys on Westjet the day before. I came across this JetBlue video and read the comments from other passengers and felt compelled to give our experience. The Blue hospitality was night and day compared to the home grown Green , or Teal for the Canadians in the industry. Keep up the great work JetBlue family.

Great video! And I love that you brought back the "Long Haul" name, it's so fitting! JetBlue seems like the "Target" of U.S. airlines while Delta, American and United are basically Macy's or Costco, and Southwest is the "Walmart" of the sky.

Haven’t flown but have the impression JetBlue is a US success story; their level of comfort and service has no comparison to their competitors and for a low cost carrier even more important; wish them all success in Europe hope Spain is added as a target as well as Italy

Have flown JetBlue regularly in recent years to visit family in Jamaica (JFK-KIN), and LOVE them. They have liberated us from the higher costs and poorer service - to Kingston, Jamaica -- of American. AA's cabin crew can often be incredibly rude & snippy. I've not had that experience yet on JetBlue.

Can you do a video on WestJet? I think that would be really interesting to see the differences between the two.

Will it pose a threat to the big 3 US airlines? Not yet, the airline is yet to own any widebodies so cannot compete on most long haul flights. On the domestic market though, for sure

I fly Delta, although I did have one uncomfortable experience with them returning home on May 1st, the day they lifted the no middle seat reg, and I got stuck in the middle seat on both legs of my flight home, all 77-7/8" inches of me, and my back hurt for days. Still I am flying them again next month as I enjoy transiting thru Atlanta Jackson-Hartsfield, nice airport. I am going to try jetBlue in the near future, perhaps on a short hop to the west coast from my southwestern home.

JetBlue just has a fantastic product and customer service. I don’t get to fly them very often now that I live outside of the tri-state area but their E-190 economy has to be one of the absolute best regional economy products in the world. Remember the difference on a BUF-JFK/LGA trip, flew down in a US Air Dash 8 -100 and flew back in a new E-190.

The color of the JetBlue airline is awesome. The blue color is what I like. That airline name and the blue color go hand in hand.

I've flown JetBlue only a few times in Economy, but the experience was AMAZING!!! Their entertainment system was great, their food and drinks were great, and overall, just a great experience. (I do hope they get wide-bodies, and if they do, what would the interior look like?)

"The Big 3" in american aviation is quickly becoming the big 4, although it's a bit insulting to compare jetBlue to united, american and delta

Delta is okay. Also southwest is good for the price point.
