CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Mortimer (Cary Grant) slowly uncovers that it's his aunts Martha (Jean Adair) and Abby (Josephine Hull) who have provided the dead body in the window seat.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Arsenic and Old Lace is director Frank Capra's spin on the classic Joseph Kesselring stage comedy, which concerns the sweet old Brewster sisters (Josephine Hull, Jean Adair), beloved in their genteel Brooklyn neighborhood for their many charitable acts. One charity which the ladies don't advertise is their ongoing effort to permit lonely bachelors to die with smiles on their faces--by serving said bachelors elderberry wine spiked with arsenic. When the sisters' drama-critic nephew Mortimer (Cary Grant) stumbles onto their secret, he is understandably put out--especially since he has just married the lovely Elaine Harper (Priscilla Lane). Given the homicidal tendencies of his aunts, the sinister activities of his escaped-convict older brother Jonathan (Raymond Massey) and the disruptive behavior of younger brother Teddy (John Alexander)--who is convinced that he's really Theodore Roosevelt, and runs around the house yelling "CHAAAAARGGGE"--Mortimer isn't keen on starting a family with his new bride. "Insanity runs in my family," he explains. "It practically gallops." Further complications ensue when the murderous Jonathan Brewster arrives home, with his snivelling accomplice Dr. Einstein (Peter Lorre) in tow. When Jonathan learns that his darling aunts have killed twelve men, he is incensed--they're challenging his own record of murders. Though the movie rights for Arsenic and Old Lace were set up so that the film could not be released until 1944, director Capra shot the film quickly and inexpensively in 1941, so that his family could subsist on his $100,000 salary while he was serving in World War II.

I'm laughing badly right now. Grant's performance is perfect.
In retrospect he considered this one of his least favorite. He felt he emoted too much, but I LOVE it!!!
Cary’s performance is perfect in this called context. At one point all you see is the back of his tilted head, and you know exactly what expression is on his face.
"Oh, he was a Methodist? Oh isn't that nice."😂
"That's odd enough..." killed me
I absolutely love this movie.
Cary's mimic kills me every time I watch this movie!
Watching this movie has become a Halloween tradition for us.
That's a good idea
Same! My family watches it every Halloween with chicken pot pie for dinner.
Us?
@@403CLT My husband and myself.
@@johnbresciano4825why not some Elderberry wine 😈
Loved doing this performance in high school! And Mortimer was easily the most fun to play, was VERY flattered to get that part! 😅
I never dreamed you'd peek!!!! I love Josephine Hull!!!
To clarify: Mortimer is referencing the M'Naughten test, the standard for determining criminal culpability at the time this movie was made. He is also wrong in his interpretation. His aunties hid the body because it would *not be pleasant at tea,* not because they were trying to hide the fact they'd deliberately killed him.
Everything about this is brilliant.🤣😆😂🤣
When my high school did this for a play, they jokingly said Adam Hoskins as Adam H. who was a teacher, and they loved it so much they kept it in.
One of the greatest comedies of all time.
This movie slays me each time i watch it
When I was in high school I got cast in this play! So much fun!
This is the greatest comedy of all time.
No, it is great, but nothing surpasses "Bringing Up Baby". Grant was equally good in that, and you also had Kathrine Hepburn at her comedic best.
I love this movie so much
A old movie But funny,a Classic.Chaaaaaaarge.
those were the days, remember'?
This film is in my top 5! Love it!
this movie soo funny
How I Love This Show!!!
Great DVD for Halloween and for children too
"There is a Happy Dale, far, far away."
At some point in my life, I've seen this movie. I do not remember when, but I've seen this
I am sorry but no one seems to remember exactly how this movie starts. The first scene is a game in the World Series in Ebbets Field with the Dodgers; it is one of the best scenes in the movie!

I'm not sure who you are referring too, but I know this movie by heart lol.
One of the greatest comedies!
But it really has nothing to do with the rest of the story...
@@Vicus_of_Utrecht whats the opening scene then?
@@MrT9822 opening scene is him and his loved one trying to secretly get married
@@ElizaDolittle it’s a gag because the Dodgers win on Halloween, weeks after the end of the baseball season, suggesting thats the only time they could win
I love this movie💖
This 1944 comedy had me laughing more then the vulgar, idiotic trashy ones today. Also, Cary grant was a stud!
Macey Heath really made in 1941 I think ,but not released to theatres since the play was running on broadway
Back then the filth was kept off camera.
Ok boomer
Nothing’s changed except information gets out a lot faster because of the internet, their were a lot of trashy vulgar movies back then too their will always be trashy vulgar movies because their are always trashy vulgar people.
Step Brothers > this
Great Movie! Gonna Buy this one!
So this is why the dinosaur in Runaways is called that. Cool.
Hollywood does make good movies, well they did.
Chris King In
Love this movie halitosis and Cary Grant exceptional , brilliant and gorgeous.
Brilliant!!!
Men don’t just get into window seats and die!
Ha!!! One of my favorites
I just saw a play at a high school and I can remember the scene
Great movie ❤
Thank you!,
I honestly think this is Grant’s best performance. Better than Bringing Up Baby and His Girl Friday.
I heart Josephine Hull & Jean Adair
BRILLIANT JUST BRILLIANT🌟🌟🌟
Where's the scene where Jonathan opens the curtains and scares the aunts?
I love how so nonshilant they are about poisoning a man/commiting murder
classic!
🤣🤣🤣🤣 what...lol. i heard of this movie thanks to Rachel Joy Scott. Love old movies
It must have been an Indian summer in Brooklyn that year.
My favourite
Darn, the scene ends too soon. I was hoping they''d get to the others.
Others? More than one others??
I only came here for my chemistry assignment. Idk what it has to do w/ it tho.
I'm from 2020
This movie. Oh, this movie... I think this movie marked the first time I ever laughed so hard I threw up.
so much hair gel
I see 👀 a lot of Steve Martin, in Carey Grant ...similar styles
One of my favorite movies. Don't make them like this. And yes, sanitariums were a real thing. We all knew the rules. You acted out, you were gone. Teddy, there is another malaria victim. Bully, I shall bury him down at the lock with the others. Charge! The scene with Peter Lorre going over the body count with Massey traveling the globe while the two aunts stayed at home both with a body count of 13. This one and Father Goose are probably Grants two best movies.
0:27 Clooney
You can dispel that Steve Martin was inspired by Carey ehhh 😊
If no one finds the lines in this movie funny, they have to be very sick.
This is one of Frank Capra's greatest works. If you would like to see this movie on Blu ray, just like me, please to the blu ray website and increase it's popularity:

The sound in this is horrible
Remake!!!!! - Glenn Close and meryl Streep..
talia12: no no no. let those 2 actresses strut their stuff without encroaching upon the god given gifts of the great jean adair and the great josephine hull and wasting their time and everybody elses. streep and close are wonderful in their own right but they can't do everything and they shouldnt even try. not everything has to be made again especially when it can't be improved upon!
@@danielstanwyck2812 Correct..When the remake of The Lady killers was made in the US it was an abomination, compared to the British original
Personally I find this movie total crap, boring, strange and unamusing.
Congratulations
