- On Sunday 22 July 2012 Steamrail ran their annual "Snow Train" tour to Traralgon in Gippsland's LaTrobe valley. The train was heavily booked with 13 carriages and was hauled by North British built R class 4-6-4 steam locomotives R761 and R711.
This video features four scenes from the down journey at Oakleigh, Drouin, Moe and near Traralgon. The train gets it's name from a side trip which is offered to Mt St Gwinear.

Now THAT'S what a heritage tour should look like! Nice one.
Beautiful doubleheader. Great catch
The opening scene is right where I had planned to film the train. Alas I slept in :-( Not to worry, as you did a great job capturing the action.
Good stuff James.
They look and sound magnificent, thanks for great footage.
The R class sounds glorious for a 2 cylinder locomotive
Two fine examples of Glaswegian engineering giving it their all.
Last time I saw R-711 she was doing the Warrnambool run by West Coast Rail :( I miss the Westcoaster but they both sound brilliant here :) Thankyou for posting this
Made my morning, James, thank you, 'Cathnkin'.
I'm going to steal a sound clip of that whistle.... 10/10 for sound....
OMG I Loe This Video
Excellent vid makes me want to come over there,no fences....thanks Steve..
Great stuff James. Wish I had gone down for this now.
Just love the R classes first saw at night on the way home to Swan Hill at Bendigo 2 Rs pulling wheat train spinning wheels trying to get traction 1956 we went to Melbourne to see the Queen around 24 hour round trip in those days
Damn ! bloody beautiful.....bet the firemen were busy on that run ...
fjbutch The mechanical stoker in the coal burner makes life easier for the fireman. ;)
Great video ,,,,top stuff Greetings from England :)
Fantastic!!!
Nice steam. Thanks.
Thanks. There's another trip in early September with double headed R classes which I hope to get footage of as well.
Thanks for the comments everyone. The lack of wind certainly helped with the sound :)
I wish they travel across North America, that would be even cooler.
Great vid.... all the shots were good but I liked the first one best of all.... great acceleration with such a heavy train. I always kick myself for never having made it to Vic when West Coast was running these on the Saturday timetabled expresses to Warrnambool in the early 2000s
And I have to admit that the R Class locos are really favs of mine..... if only I could buy one …☁☁☁☁☁⁘⁙⁙……Hᴜɢʜ….TU…..ツ
