    As a long time viewer of the show, I must say this is one of the best New Rules I have seen in years. When discussing geopolitics, people often don’t look into the long, complicated history of the places in question, leaving out vital context to the modern situation. More importantly, those people will also forget that there are many past examples of similar situations in history that can help us get a nuanced perspective on the current conflict.

      Small problem with Bills “land grab, get over it”. In his Mexico example, millions of “Mexicans” were integrated as labor as Americans. That was a win/win.
      Land has people in it. What is the Bill/Israel solution to the people on this land? That was conveniently omitted. (I’ll wait).
      Edit: And by the way…wasn’t Hitler just a land grabber? Should we have said: “get over it France”.
      Edit2: Before you jump to conclusions, I am an atheist, and think religious conflict / death are people dying for fairy tales. And I keep seeing atheists like Bill Maher, and Sam Harris offer NO REAL SOLUTIONS, other than allow them to “bias hedge” out of saying what will eventually happen: killing of Palestinians for a land grab. It might be slow, but that is what is going on. Just admit. I’m tired of this avoidance talk.

      True. Though even Bill messed up some of this info.
      For instance, he didn't mention that JORDAN was specifically set aside for Arab Muslims. THAT is their country. Not Israel. Not Palestine. And there was NOT genocide "on both sides" re: Israel and Arab Muslims-- the Jews/Israelis have NEVER practiced ethnic cleansing, whereas Islam DEMANDS ethnic cleansing and Muslims have obliged. And the Jews did NOT force all or most Muslims to leave Palestine when Israel was established. These Arabs were told to leave by surrounding ARAB LEADERSHIP so that the Arabs could then attack Israel and kick the Jews out. The Jews did NOT "kick them out."

      @@cw4623 You don't get to rewrite history. The United Nations planned a partition for Israel and Palestine between 1947-48. Over 3/4 of a million Palestinians have been displaced In 1948 by the Israelis and thousands were massacred, so yes it is ethnic cleansing. Look up the definition. Look up the definition. You claim that the Arabs left by order of Arab leaders so that the soldiers could fight, which means they did the opposite of using human shields. Commendable! What else would a leader do when their people are being driven out by armies of savages? Would that leader ask them to stay and get killed? If Islam demands ethnic cleansing why has it spread across ethnicities from Indonesia to Guinea, with the statement of Prophet Muhammad saying no non-Arab is superior to an Arab or an Arab to a non-Arab except by status of character, yet Jews gatekeep their ethnoreligion by saying Jews can only be Jews if their mother was a Jew, and despise the goyim? And why have Islamic caliphates, from the Rashidun to the Ottoman, rescued Jews from the Christian Crusaders who killed them and drove them out?

      @@cw4623 A lot of false equivalency is used in this monologue but it's is funny. Maher has had a success with political shows because he's intelligent but when it comes to religion and especially Islam, his bias shows. I am shocked at how much of a propogandist he's become for Israel recently and never thought he'd brush off 2024 mass civilian deaths (war of retribution) so casually just because they're Palestinian / Muslims. He's definitely anti-Islam and views Christianity and Judaism in a more favorable light but is a Catholic turned atheist. If he calls for a priest on his deathbed, I would not be shocked. Until his early teens, he was unaware that his mother, whose family was from Hungary, was Jewish. Owing to his disagreement with the Catholic Church's doctrine about birth control, Maher's father stopped taking Maher and his sister to Catholic Mass when Maher was thirteen. Palestinian leadership has always been poor but in the last few decades, Israeli intelligence has played them very successfully, decimating PLO in favour of Hamas, in the hopes that they could be controlled and used to obtain the end result that is now very achievable, scattering a people as they were once scattered / an act that can be legally described as genocide. I'm with the college kids, the maimed children and mother who've lost their babies due to Israel's bombings because a group of Hamas / Iran tools rampaged, raped and murdered in the name of Palestine. The CIA propped up Pinochet, Saddam Hussein, Gaddafi and Manuel Noriega. Netanyahu did much the same in the case of Hamas. For years, the Qatari government had been sending millions of dollars a month into the Gaza Strip - money that helped prop up the Hamas government there. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel not only tolerated those payments, he had encouraged them.

You know how Americans love to talk about why the west needs to back Israel because they're the underdog outlier in the Middle East? People used to talk about Rhodesia in a similar way until they went rogue. Israel is going down the same path to rogue statehood in my opinion.

    I'm jewish and Israeli and first of all I would like to thank you and your team for speaking up, so thank you all.
    1:34 Note: After the war of 1947, any Arab who chose to stay in Israel land got a citizenship, aka equal rights. Those who didn't want to stay, moved to the neighboring countries (who started the war on the Jews as a part of the very old trend of ethnic cleansing all Jews), and most got citizenship (which means they are not refugees! but are still claimed to be refugees by some organizations to this day, which is unheard of). Those who didn't chose either, had to live in the land under military, until this was also removed from Gaza Strip and (the terror organization) Hamas was democratically elected.
    Three facts in addition to that for more context for those who care to learn:
    1. 'Palestine': derives from ancient Greek 'Philistia'. Philistines are the biblical Enemies of the Israelites, which tried to do what? ethnically cleanse the Jews (you can read all about 'the timeline of the name Palestine' in wikipedia).
    2. 'Apartheid' claims: Israel is the only democratic state in the entire Middle East - where all of us, jews muslims christians druze can live as equals (yoseph haddad

      Quote: "but history has shown that facts do not matter to ignorant people who love believing what they already believe. you're trying to convince people who think masturbating is the same as having real sex that they are really not having sex."
      In my perspective, this belittles and sexually shames "these people". Not only is it disrespectful but it is also dehumanizing, as you and I both don't even know who "these people" are personally.
      I truly believe we need to take responsibility for the way we communicate, in all forms. I love the quote of this judge who said "חופש הביטוי הוא לא חופש הביזוי״, which might not rhyme in translation to English but still is true: Freedom of Speech is not Freedom of Disdain (or Contemn).
      Hope this message will convey my well-intentions. I know how frustrating this whole situation is, I know hopelessness and I know loss. @@dagduesund5175 Humanity will only be able to access Truth by accepting we can only be aware of the “Relative Truth”. We thought the world was flat, for example, until discovered otherwise.
      I find it fascinating you chose a quote about believing in god, because respectfully I believe that as much as the belief in a god can be for some (and not all) part of the solution, it can also be harmful and part of the problem we face today. Specifically, in some religious circles and schoolings, there's a lack of dialogue about scripts that are being held as sacred. Therefore, as history has shown time and time again, there are many people who committed crimes against humanity while claiming that their doings are "God's will". I think that in this conversation, as it's important to recognize some specific scripts can heal, it's also important to shine a light on the dark places, where specific scripts can actually do harm.
      The Jewish people being called “the People of the Book” also speak about keeping the dialogue alive, which we do also with continuous writings and interpretations. I’d like to add one very known phrase (and principle) in the Jewish culture which is: “דֶּרֶךְ אֶרֶץ קָדְמָה לַתּוֹרָה”. The first two words ‘דֶּרֶךְ אֶרֶץ’ (‘Derech Eretz’) literal translation ‘The way of the Land’, and the meaning of the full phrase translates to “Proper universal ethical behavior precedes the Torah.”
      No matter which religion, it’s a matter of the sake of humanity itself to be able to criticize specific harmful scripts, even if people hold them sacred, and with that comes healing a lot of the hate and violence we can find. If we look at the antisemitism that arrives from some Islamic people and groups, it’s important to note how it in fact has roots in the Quran. One example: "Thou wilt surely find the most hostile of men to the believers are the Jews and the idolaters." (5:85) = Jews are hostile to Muslims. Another example: "And He brought down those of the People of the Book who supported them from their fortresses and cast terror in their hearts; some you slew, some you made captive. And He bequeathed upon you their lands, their habitations, and their possessions, and a land you never trod. God is powerful over everything." (33:26) = An indication of the battles against the Jews, and a divine authorization to kill them.
      There is a concept in Judaism of ‘Tikkun Olam’ (תִּיקּוּן עוֹלָם = 'repairing of the world'), which refers to various forms of action intended to repair, heal and improve the world; to the pursuit of universal justice which based on the idea that "Jews bear responsibility not only for their own moral, spiritual, and material welfare, but also for the welfare of society at large.”
      Humanity has a total need - spiritual, emotional, psychological, physical, logical need - of connection to something bigger than ourselves (be it a Justice, God, Collective etc), finding meaning and belonging. This journey can be beautifully sacred as much as hopelessly devastating. I believe truth can be accessible with empathetic, engaging and knowledgeable communication; through encouragement of curiosity, of questions in the dialogue itself. And I choose to have faith in humanity. I maintain faith in humanity, including my own self. It doesn’t mean I don’t have boundaries, priorities, etc. And it doesn’t mean it comes easy to me, somedays it feels impossible. Yet without it, personally and with all seriousness, I have no reason to live. Rephrasing that with hope and love, it is my cherished reason to live, and pursue life that is worthy of living.

      There's a lot of historical inaccuracies - such as that the West Bank alone was the "original UN partition deal" (it is only about a 1/3 of what was promised to the Palestinians in 1947 which itself is less than a third of what they had pre-Zionism), or that Jews were kicked out of Muslim countries post-1948 (only Syria, the vast majority of the Jewish migration was willingly to the new Jewish state to do "Aliyah" and take advantage of land incentives), or that Palestine attacked again and again and lost (the six-day war was started by Israel), or misrepresentations "Arafat was offered 95% of the West Bank" (the Palestinians were not offered the most important part - Jerusalem. And the West Bank at the very least should be wholly Palestine - annexing even more of it through a peace deal is ridiculous.)

    Dead on Bill. But important correction:
    The U.N. 1947 Partition Plan that you mentioned at 5:35 didn't allot just the West Bank to the Arabs. All of today's Jordan
    (referred to as Trans-Jordan during the British Mandate period) plus the West Bank was to go to the Arabs. What was left to the Jews was an army general's nightmare but the Jewish population of the Mandate accepted it. What the Arabs would've gotten would've been an area about 4 times the size of today's Israel and about 15 times bigger than today's West Bank.
    Also what history neglects to say is that many of today's palestinians moved into today's Israel in the early 20th Century as economic conditions improved from the British being there after WW1 and also from the first wave of Jews entering the land at the end of the 19th Century. Lastly it's important to note that Jews have always lived in Israel from ancient times to the present day.

      There has been an Arab population in Israel/Palestine at least since the 7th century AD (Jews have been there longer, but still, it's a substantial historical period). But the notion that Arabs living in Israel/Palestine form a separate nation is much more recent. Arguably, so is the notion of Syrian, Lebanese, Jordanian and Iraqi nations. All these countries were created by the British and the French when they took over a large part of the former Ottoman Empire at the end of World War I. IIRC, prior to that, the Arabs perceived Palestine as part of Syria, not as a separate ethnic/national entity. It was the Jews who perceived the Land of Israel as a distinct historical-geographic-national unit

    • @JeffreyManners
      @JeffreyManners Před 5 měsíci +33

      Eloquent, yes; but also one-sided as it completely ignores the Palestinian perspective. Mr. Maher and all advocates for Israel ignore the fact that this untenable situation came about when in 1917 the British Empire promised to establish a homeland for the Jews and ignored the views of the people who already lived there. But this was an all too typical "generous" gesture of the British Empire - namely to promise something which did not belong to them to someone else. (Promising in 1915 to give Dalmatia and South Tyrolia to Italy is another example.) If Britain wanted to be so generous and establish a Jewish Homeland they should have given the Jews some land which was British, a couple of their own home counties. And as for the UN Partition Plan, were the Palestinians consulted? Of course, not. As Bertrand Russell pointed out at that time, "No people anywhere in the world would accept being expelled en-masse from their own country; how can anyone require the people of Palestine to accept a punishment which no body else would tolerate?" There are now some 7 million Palestinians and 7 million Jews who live in the territory of the former Palestinian mandate. The two state solution is long dead, as the West Bank settlements make a Palestinian state non-viable. The only solution now is a one state solution in which both Palestinians and Jews share the territory. As Tony Judt warned in his 2003 essay in the New York Review of Books, if Israel continued with its settlements policies in the West Bank it would destroy any possibility of a two state solution. Israel then would have to choose between being a Jewish state or a democratic state. It could not be both. Under the Netanyahu it has clearly chosen to be the former by disenfranchising the vast majority of the 7 million Palestinians who live under Israeli control.

      @WyattTheGuyatt Před 4 měsíci +50

      I am very sorry your ancestors and other Swabians had to go through that ordeal. No one should be persecuted for their culture, ethnicity, or language, and just because this type of persecution is ubiquitous throughout history doesn’t mean it’s inevitable and doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be fought. I think that what Bill is arguing comes dangerously close to “might makes right.” Just because things happen often doesn’t mean they’re okay or should be considered acceptable.
      It’s true that both Israelis and Palestinians have harmed each other, but two wrongs do not make a right. It is important to consider the scale of harm done on both sides during these conflicts, especially in recent times. For example, in this current conflict, 1400 Israelis were killed, and in response 20400 Gazans were killed. Or, in 2018 and 2019, when 200 or so Palestinians, most of whom were nonviolently protesting, were killed by the IDF, even though no Israelis were killed. I think that in recent years, Israel has shown a trend of responding disproportionately to conflicts in ways that engender more hatred and mistrust toward the Israeli government within the occupied Palestinian territories.
      Palestinians live under constant surveillance and restriction from the outside world, and they face forced eviction, brutalization, murder, and a lack of economic opportunity. They are not in a position to work toward peace if they are constantly struggling to get food on the table or to keep their homes from becoming part of settlements. In order to truly move toward peace, I think that the Israeli government should show Palestinians that it is operating in good faith and truly wants an end to the violence and freedom on both sides. An important first step in this direction is to implement a ceasefire, which is what the vast majority of the American people and pro-Palestinian activists support.
      Finally, I would like to make it clear that I apply these standards to all conflicts, not just this one. if I had been alive during your ancestors’ time, I would have advocated against their persecution, as I do now against the persecution of Palestinians, and as I will in the future whenever the rights of an oppressed minority are infringed upon.

      ….and because it happened to you I should just accept that it happened to me, me as in Palestinian?!?!! Our land, our homes we stolen and kind of atrocities were committed against my people, the Zionists who we took in as refugees fleeing prosecution in Europe turned around and stabbed us in the back. We will get our land back if not today then tomorrow…..free free Palestine

      Bill Maher justifying genocide because this isn't the first time there has been genocide is ridiculous. We are in 2023 and the World can do more to stop it.
