  • Six reasons why a vocational career and studying horticulture is right for you! I did a video about how to begin a career in this field but didn’t include reasons for why you should. In this video posted today I discuss the main pros to starting in a job in this subject.
    I currently work in horticulture and have owned my own gardening business for 5 years. I work in this field day to day and would love for other people to find their passion for gardening and/or working outdoors.
    Horticulture is a very fulfilling career and I love it. There is pressure to find something you love to have a 'forever' career but in this field it's easy to jump between sectors. Giving you a good variety in your work. Day to day it's a very exciting job to have. It becomes a lifestyle over time.

    I have been working an office job since I graduated high school. I keep getting burnt out and moving to a new job. I think this would be such an awesome and needed career path! I want to simplify my life and put my happiness first. Thank you for your videos and inspiration! ♥ 🌿

    I just stared my horticulture classes, and I am so intimidated. Everyone around me seems to have an agricultural background, and I'm a cosmetologist. 😅 Watching videos to try to remind me why I've started this major... really nervous I'm not cut out for this.

      I'd like to know how you're doing too! Been thinking about taking classes, but I have a background in IT, not agriculture!

      It's a daunting subject to study but I take comfort in knowing that no one has ever learnt the whole of horticulture and there are so many different paths to take in it that you can't be compared to fellow students. There is normally a 'click' with this subject and once you have the basics you'll be just as good if not more knowledgeable that the others around you. Best of luck with your studies I hope it all goes well :)

    Thank you, your video made me feel I finally fit somewhere: I’m a uni drop out (everybody in my family has a degree, even some relatives born 150 years ago graduated at university…), in the last months I was considering horticulture as a career so I started volunteering and asking questions to people in the field, now your 6 reasons resonate so much with me, you gave me a lot of self-confidence in taking this path. Thank you!!

    Been working in retail for nearly ten years. Unfortunately my previous degree didn't really offer me the kind of opportunities I'd hoped for. Started an SVQ in Horticulture and landscaping a few months ago up in Scotland. Really love it and seems like it is already proving me opertunities even at the basic level I'm at now. Totally agree with you assessment of the subject.

    I would like to become a gardener but I feel worried about the fitness aspect of the job. Do you need to be really really fit? I would say I have average fitness but a lot of the job postings say they want people who are strong and physically fit.

    • @owensoutdoors6142
      @owensoutdoors6142  Před rokem +2

      A lot of these adverts are aimed at 'men' the details of the job often include building/landscaping rather than just horticulture. I started out with below-average fitness levels and now have good stamina and strength. Gardening uses different muscles and is quite labour intensive, in a way that you can't build up at the gym, so if you're starting with average fitness I would say that's more than adequate for the job!
