How to start a career in horticulture

  • Describing how to start a career in horticulture as schools/colleges do not provide it as a viable option for younger people. It is not accessible for people to study horticulture and this needs to change.
    At 18, I was left with no idea what I wanted to do with life or what to study; if I had known horticulture was a career option for me, I would have found my own way a lot sooner.
    There are many vocational skills colleges and classes out there; they are just inaccessible for younger people and you face a stigma when applying to them.
    I currently run my own gardening business and work in a vocational career day to day. I'd love for others to be able to do the same easily.

    I appreciate your videos so much. I’m in the U.S. but I have been struggling to figure out what I want to do. I start school in the fall and I was set up for a community college transfer to university majoring in biology. I had so many mixed feelings about it and then I found out the community college has a horticulture program and then I saw your video and switched my major a week later. I’ve been in the garden since I was a kid and I love growing things and watching them thrive. I wish there was a stateside horticulturalist that put out videos like you. Thank you!

      Yes! I'm working towards transferring to a bachelor horticulture program. I've been looking at jobs online to make sure there are options and YES there are good jobs. The jobs I've seen have been around $40,000-$170,000 salary. Keep in mind, the more education you have the more you can end up making.

    I'm 33 and just decided to change careers and everything I've ever studied for! Throughout High School and both times I attended College I took all Medical classes and that's where I've always had jobs, in the Medical field. I decided this year that I'm not the slightest bit interested in Medical anymore, my passion is in gardening and plants, I love everything about them and nature itself! I'm hoping this fall I'll be enrolled in a science or Biology program which I can eventually further to a Bachelor's in Horticulture. Yey plants!!! I really enjoy your videos.

    I'm going to be a volunteer horticulturist at my local biopark (zoo, botanic garden, and our local riparian area). I am super excited!
    I've studied herbalism and am relatively familiar with medicinal uses of plants and how to prepare them (salves, tinctures, compresses, etc)
    but I don't have much experience with growing the plants so I am really excited to learn and start this new journey. I don't know if it's something I will want to make into a career, but I am passionate about conservation and working with plants so we'll see how this goes!
    Your channel is super helpful and motivating for a beginner horticulturist.

      I have a few new videos up now about horticultural education :) Apprenticeships are available at big gardens like Kew and National Trust houses. Would be good to get a few online gardening courses done first so you can study and work at the same time as apprenticeships are quite low paid at the moment. Thank you for watching my video !

    Hey! I’m wondering what are the reasons (that you’ve noticed) why someone would drop out of horticulture?

    • @owensoutdoors6142
      @owensoutdoors6142  Před 3 lety +1

      There's a few reasons: the work is harder than people imagine, it's more science-y than people think and the pay is lower than you think at first. There are intimidating parts of all careers but horticulture is not spoken about enough so people are shocked by these reasons when it should just be the norm :)

    • @kristelane8390
      @kristelane8390 Před 3 lety +2

      I would say horticulture. Botany is more like... The harder sciences of plants and horticulture is more hands on, the art of gardening.

    • @owensoutdoors6142
      @owensoutdoors6142  Před 3 lety

      Yes I agree, horticulture is a broader subject that includes plant care etc. Botany is more about the hardcore science of plants.
