  • Today we are testing the built-in duo-band filter against light pollution. We start with IC417, the Spider Nebula. After processing it looks pretty good. The image looks much better with the filter. Horsehead Nebula next to Flame Nebula. Bright and a very nice picture. With the filter the colors are different, but not that much better than without the filter. The Monkey Head Nebula. Bright nebula, nice picture even without a filter. But the filter improves the result significantly. The Christmas tree cluster and cone nebula. You can get a nice picture without a filter. But here too the filter tops everything. My conclusion: I will always use the filter

When wanting a quick picture when weather is closing in or time to go I've gone without the filter then used contrast to eliminate graininess.

I ran a similar test in my Bortle 8 skies and the difference for emission nebulae (the filter is only useful for emission nebulae) like M42 was enormous. My assumption is that in low Bortle skies the images would look better without the filter but I've had no opportunity to try that out yet.

Will try, been using my s50 a few times and just realized it has built in filter.
