But man, the jumping and the attacking and etc you went over are all issues I had with the game myself. Terra's final fight vs. Terranort was also a letdown in that you're still playing as Terra with your own loadout. It's not that he's full of BS. He's the perfect way to test a player's skills. Beating him means that not only have you beaten the toughest boss, but you also have shown mastery of the combat in the game.

I would recommend giving Re:Coded on the DS a try if you haven't already. It's got its fair share of issues but it has the best feeling combat out of all the command deck games and if you don't care about the story it can be a pretty fun romp just for the gameplay alone although it is very minigame heavy. Like if it wasn't for data sectors, 80% of the game would just be anything other than the main gameplay.

I still say that Proud is a good way to play KH2 (or KH2FM). In ways, it's harder (you don't get a strength boost and lack extra support abilities). I never found the Critical restrictions to be that punishing. I never noticed the slower EXP gain and the HP cap doesn't change much since you still have Second Chance and Once More. The only real benefit it has over Proud is being faster due to Sora's new abilities and strength.
I haven't beaten KH3 yet, but I agree that so far, it's way too easy. I only died when I flat-out couldn't see what an enemy was doing, and that was twice. I even used EXP Zero multiple times thoughout the game (long times), and it's still easy.

For DDD I can see how not getting involved with the Spirit system would save you a lot of heart ache. But if you were doing a completionist version or you were at the very least trying to obtain really good abilities this was nightmare of a system that should have never been created.
Nomura must have picked up a copy of B&W the year prior because in the same fucking year FF13-2 AND DDD came out. And the devs for both titles seemed to be infatuated with a monster party mechanic.
When you played 1FM or even 2FM abilities came with progression. Just...play the game. With Dream Eaters you're forced to gain power by doing things you don't want to do and those mechanics were not done very well. I don't really know how people did the Dream Eater games but I tried to play HD DDD and the moment I started interacting with Dream Eaters I gave up. I just couldn't deal with this game after 100%-ing the 3DS title.

Waves upon waves of enemies will fall before you in seconds (and magnega scoops them up so they can't reach you with attacks) and this makes grinding for command exp and munny less painful while also increasing your own level. And for bosses I find that homing fire spells as well as mega flare and shotlocks are the best option. This works exceptionally well even for Terra and his pitiful magic stat.

I never understood why people thought surges were the only good commands. I got faith and salvation for Ventus and time splicer and firaga burst for Aqua. There were more, but those were the main commands that I remember, cause they carried me through the game like you wouldn't believe. I believed everyone at first and used surges in terra's story, but it was so boring. I couldn't do it. Maybe I was handicapping myself, maybe not. Regardless, once I used the commands i actually personally enjoyed, I had a lot more fun.

Really glad you liked Chain of Memories! The GBA version was my introduction to the series, and I just absolutely fell in love with that game. I beat it 4 times all the way through, and when I heard about the PS2 remake, I made sure I bought a copy of that the day it came out, and loved that one even more. It's one of my favorite games in the series, and I've gone through it again and again.
Now, while Chain of Memories is *one* of my favorites in the series, Birth by Sleep actually *is* my favorite (tied with Dream Drop Distance, in fact), and I'm really sorry you had so much frustration with it :( I do understand your complaints, though, and part of my love for the game is tied to personal things including where I was in life when the game came out and stuff like that.
On Dream Drop Distance, I played it twice on the 3DS and I just really wasn't into it for some reason. I had no real problem with it, I was just really apathetic towards it. When I played it on the PS4, though, I freaking loved it and I got REALLY into the Dream Eater Spirit system. It ended up becoming my first (and so far, only) Kingdom Hearts platinum.
One last thing: I really... REALLY hope that the Master of Masters is the main villain going forward past KH3, because just having Ray Chase play the villain of the series would be amazing. I would love every minute of it if it's even *half* of his performance in KHχ Back Cover.

it’s as fun as the time you put into your card system. in my opinion it’s really fun, when you maximize the experience it falls between the 6th and top5 of the games. the story is great as far as the castle stuff goes. it’s essentially most comparable to DDD. DDD with superior gameplay (can’t believe i’m saying that) but weaker story, and vice versa with Chain of Memories. Except you can still make CoM’s combat enjoyable. can’t do that with ddd’s story lol

I agree with the "floatiness" of Terra in BBS, but I just need to get something off my chest. You say he should fall faster because he is heavier. That's incorrect. Weight has nothing to do with fall speed. Maybe something really light may be stopped by air, but in human weight that's neglectable and all would fall at the same speed. In a vacuum a sheet of paper would fall at the same speed than a tank.

I'm not 100% in agreement with "KH2 improved virtually on every level from it's predecessors". The combat in KH2 is pretty much peak for Kingdom Hearts without a doubt. The game also easily features the strongest roster of boss fights to compliment the combat.
However, and this is a point I felt was kind of brushed off in the video, or it's just me who feels this way. Going from Kingdom Hearts 1 directly to Kingdom Hearts 2, one of the first things I noticed once I got past Twilight Town is just how dreadful the level design has gotten. Now, Kingdom Hearts 1 was by no means anything to sing songs about in that department, but the level of exploration you got from each level is super commendable. There's a good amount of verticality to each of the levels, secrets to unlock at later levels and overall it urges you to actually explore your environment to find chests and trinity symbols.
There was a great moment in Deep Jungle for me where I later in the level realized that you could grab the box in the Tree House, place it next to the broken staircase to find a upper level which you can use to get around the house itself and find a ladder which leads you to the top of the Tree House. Subsequently with the right tools you can jump over to the life boat which is hanging at the side (and I imagine some of the later magic like Gravity, but I haven't tried) in order to get a secret chest. Or the interactivity in the levels themselves where in Traverse Town you can power up Gizmo's Shop by using Thundaga on a broken cable near the first Guard Armor boss fight arena. Similarly with Hollow Bastion, you can use Freeze on the water bubbles which solidifies them to reach hidden chests. The list goes on.
This level of intricacy in the levels themselves is entirely absent from KH2, and not just that, the levels themselves are often made up of straight corridors which leaves extremely little to the imagination. Going from KH1's amazing Hollow Bastion level, to then briefly make it into Hollow Bastion again in KH2 should've been a much bigger moment for me. I get Hollow Bastion isn't in great shape by the time of KH2, but the place is the literal definition of nothing but hallways leading into more hallways. I didn't expect the same size of Hollow Bastion 1.0 since it was the penultimate level of it's respective game, and obviously had a metric ton of love poured into every crevice of it.
I think KH2 went on record to over-correct some of the faults of KH1's level design. KH1 often also devolved into going from room to room, trying to make certain events trigger. Sometimes the levels didn't communicate well to the player how you progress (See: Monstro for example), but in it's place KH2 has gone polar opposite end and presents you with lifeless levels that has you go through the motions instead of urge you to explore the levels. Chests has become a sort of breadcumb to lead players into a specific direction instead of a reward for actually taking your time and exploring what the level has to offer.
With all this said, is level design important to Kingdom Hearts as a series? Not entirely. I do think KH2 plays to it's strengths. It's obvious that the developers knew they had something fucking awesome when they worked on the combat, so I imagine that's where the focus sort of went. Less emphasis on KH1's awkward(but charming too in my opinion) platforming, and more arena with enemies you have to deal with. I just wish for future KH titles to kind of marry level design and combat better together. As of writing this, I've completed KH3 and I thought the level design leaned closer to KH1 in terms of verticality and secrets, but KH3 hasn't quite nailed KH2's combat.
It's all down to what you think is important or not. When all is said, I wouldn't be surprised if a majority of KH fans don't really care about levels to the same degree as I do. KH's strength has always been in it's combat and wholesome story, no doubt.

Back Cover seems kinda weird and pointless until you fully play III. and yeah some people might not like Nomura looking into the future before concluding the narrative he currently had, but I kinda like it. One thing that sucks a lot is when a good trilogy or story series concludes and a few years later they try to continue with a new adventure even though almost none of it has to do with the old. It feels weird. This makes it seem that, while not a pawn because he wasn't being used by anyone, Xehanort was only one piece. sure these guys might have their own plans and aren't really connected to him much, but i like knowing about them now instead of suddenly learning "oh and now these guys are a thing" when the next game does eventually come.
