's what I get for trying to understand this minefield of a series.
It's weird for me; I always thought 'What is Ventus doing here?', whenever I saw Roxas because I played Birth By Sleep first.
Anti-A.I. Allegiance so was Nico and I (Never got to play Birth by Sleep, and was too lazy to read the Data logs in DDD *I Never finished until after watching that playthrough* )
Chandler Kristoff ... okay to clear things up: Roxas and Ventus are two different people; the reason why Roxas looks like Ven is because of the factoid that Been was in Sora's. In the next game (recoded), theoretically it chose vens Appearance vs Sora's Appearance is that Ven is closest to purity; because of the fact Sora looks almost like Vanitas is because (massive Spoilers for Recoded)
Is that Sora's heartless is impure, thus forming something of a Reincarnation of Vanitas (I may be wrong, but that's the best explanation I got; keep in mind Nomura was *drunk* when writing re: Coded plot, so frankly "and note to Juan" focus on the Gameplay and not give a f*ck about it's plot. Think of it more a portable RPG/hack and slash hybrid made for speedrunning (yes, the game encourages speedrunning if you want to go anywhere)

By the way, for those who think that Terra is literally stupid enough to trust every Disney Villain in BBS... no. He initially gives them all the benefit of the doubt, but makes his judgement over whether or not they're trustworthy later on - and the only ones he thinks are actually trustworthy are Hook and Jumba - the former because Peter Pan was kinda being a thieving prick and the latter because Terra doesn't know enough about Stitch to know that Jumba's technically a villain. Aside from those two, Terra accidentally helps Maleficent ONCE, which for the fans is proof that Terra trusts and supports literally every Disney villain ever.
Cody Mayo Never thought he was stupid, just impressionable. Now stupid is Annakin for how stupidly he was manipulated by Palpatine like he couldn't think for himself. Terra on the other hand had genuine doubts and fears that were slowly ebbed away at him the more he encountered, it wasn't a sudden change but one that was fairly well descended.
Well I'm fairness to Anakin he was more desprit then stupid, he kept getting visions of his wife dieing and the sith were the only ones giving him a solution since the Jedi were doing Jack all and have shown already to be over stepping their power with the attempt coup on the chancellor, he just let that dark power go over his head and sedious toke complete advantage of it.

Sora wasn't just a young kid when he helped heal Ven's heart at the start of the game: he was just about to be born. His heart was on the way to his body. Healing Ven was literally the first thing Sora ever did.
By the way, you did miss something in regards to Ventus's comatose state at the end of the game: since the X-blade was made of both Ventus and Vanitas, destroying it basically meant that Ven was sacrificing himself to prevent it from being formed. This destroyed Vanitas utterly, but Ven's heart was immensely damaged, leaving his body. It then sought out Sora, who had helped him several years prior, and stayed inside him to heal up and went dormant. Ven's heart has been inside Sora's body ever since (emphasis on body; Roxas had Ven's heart inside him).
Ven's heart is actually *not* the reason Sora can use the Keyblade in KH1 - rather, it's the reason why Roxas and Sora could dual wield in KH2 and the end of 358/2 Days. Sora was able to use the Keyblade in 1 because Riku embraced darkness on the islands, so the Keyblade (which was meant for Riku) went to the next best thing: Sora. Riku forcibly took it back at Hollow Bastion, but after Sora proved his heart was stronger, it became his for good. Riku made a Keyblade for himself sometime between Chain and 2. The Keyblade that Roxas used was Sora's, and Xion's was fake. After Xion died, Roxas's desire to remember her was so strong that it reawakened Ven's heart (remember, it stayed inside Sora's body, which became Roxas), giving Roxas access to Ven's Keyblade, hence the dual-wielding. When Roxas rejoined with Sora, Ven's now awakened heart went with him, now giving Sora the ability to dual-wield in 2.
Also note that, thanks to timeline bullshit, Birth by Sleep establishes that every world in the Kingdom Hearts universe, including the Realm of Darkness, runs on its own timeflow, and this rate is always "the speed of plot convenience". Why do this? Because they wanted BbS to be set 10 years before KH1, but they also wanted to include Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty and Snow White as worlds... but they all showed up as Princesses of Heart in 1, and it clearly hasn't been 10 years since their stories happened (Snow White was 14 when she rode off into the sunset with Prince Charming, and she sure isn't 24 in KH1). So Aqua may have been in the Realm of Darkness for 10 years from the perspective of "the plot", but for her, it's been a few weeks, maybe a few months at most. Pay attention, because in true Kingdom Hearts writing fashion, that little bit of handwaving becomes a motherfucking _plot point_ in Dream Drop Distance.

The reason Aqua goes in last is a thematic element. While Terra is screwing things up with villains and Ventus is just going around making friends, it's Aqua who is actually the real protagonist of Birth By Sleep. A major hint is the timeline of events in the theater: Aqua usually (though not always) visits a world after Terra and Ven already have, and cleans up their loose ends by kicking the butt of the local Disney villain and setting things right for the local good guys. And in contrast to Terra and Ven having character flaws, she's selfless, brave, strong, always wants to help others, always wants to do the right thing, and puts her friends above herself. Her main flaw is trying to protect them to the point she patronizes them which, especially for Terra, drives them away from her. Most obvious in the Final Episode. With Ven comatose and Terra being possessed, it's Aqua's story that keeps going to bring the game to its true conclusion. It's also worth noting that in the Secret Ending, Ansem considers her to be a lot like the hero of almost every other game in the series, Sora, because of her kindness and dedication to her friends.

Umm Ventus wasn’t just going around making friends, Ven story is very important, the plot of birth by sleep story wouldn’t work without him. he saved many characters and tied few loose ends in most worlds he visited.
Too bad she still comes off about as colourful as vanilla and despite how ideal she is being a near perfect hero, she’s still repeatedly beaten down by the plot needing her to eat shit and fail just enough so that the main games can happen the way it does.
I liked doing the order backwards for my first playtrough, it made me look forward to see everything that terra did

Honestly, it seems like Kingdom Hearts just made the first game, the second game, then avoided every possible opportunity for a third game by making a bunch of midquels, prequels, N-Sane remakes, then licensing somebody's fan game, and finally making this.
Ah, well. Kingdom Hearts needed more Knuckles.
Really because to me it seems like, they made the first game. Then when making the second thought rather than going from A to B we'd whore the shit out of this series by not giving KH2 enough story to hold up on it's own and supplementing it with more spin-offs and a prequel to give themselves more money. Luckily BBS is a good game but still.

Close. Sora can DUAL WIELD because he holds Ventus heart. Plus, Sora was a new born baby when filled in Ventus' heart. Ventus had no impact Sora wielding the Keyblade in KH1 though Sora is just that special/unique. This is because he is the ONLY character to have a Keyblade choose him and not have a Master perform an Inheritance ceremony on him.

Xion didn't give Roxas the ability to dual wield. When Roxas saw Xion die it "awakened" Ventus' heart (which resided in Roxas) thus allowing him to use Ventus' keyblade and then dual wield.
Roxas (and Ventus' heart) later fuse back with Sora thus giving him the ability to dual wield.

Oh God, the plot... I know that it's entirely possible to understand what's going on if you pay attention, but the real question is not can you follow what's happening, it's do you even want to? All this tangled madness and what do you get out of it? Some stiff acting? Some occasionally face-palm-worthy writing? There's just not a lot of incentive for putting in the effort to figure out how the pieces fit together, in my opinion.
You forgot the characters that are as interesting as a slice of bread made of wood and the lightning-fast pacing that makes everything look like a kindergarten play where kids say their lines and rush off to the next scene.
Add in terms of narrative, KH3 is worse. Unfortunately it also affected enjoyment of the actual gameplay.

It only managed to make a majorly underdeveloped romance look even worse in my eyes, despite the variety of romantic scenes present. The data bosses were half the time fun and the other half plain frustrating, playing as Kairi was good as long as it lasted since she's back reclaiming her overused trope(apparently falling asleep for a year and letting scientists examine her heart for clues is the best the writers could thing for her development as a character), playing as Roxas was the most fun out of any other playable side character and the final fight against Yozora added some new excitement in terms of secret bosses. The secret ending has managed to sparked my interest in the future of the series, because of the unexpected dark tones, the surprising influence of the final fantasy world and the return of the World ends with you. Also, Sora and Riku seem to be the protagonists of the next base installment which kinda makes it a dream drop distance sequel, but way more heavily shrouded in mystery.
You know, you just happen to be my favorite CZcams channel ever. I actually watched all of your videos over the course of one month. I think I watched 3 or 4 a day and it went from there. Your content is awesome and I love how you manage to make game reviews fun as hell. When Xehanort makes Vanitas, he basically fractures Vent us’ heart and extracts the dark half, which is why he ends up comatose. But as Xehanort attempts to abandon Ven on Destiny Islands, Ven’s heart forged a connection with the heart of the newly born Sora, (sort of) explaining why Vanitas looks like Sora. At the end he actually destroys Vanitas, the other half of his heart, causing him to become comatose again and his heart leaving his body and sleeping in Sora’s heart (which is why Roxas looks like Ven and why Ven’s armor protects Sora from darkness, to the point of getting corrupted, at the end of KH 3D and fighting the same way as Ventus with the keyblade held backwards. It’s also why Sora inherited the keyblade when Riku was corrupted by darkness, at the beginning of KH1). All of this is why Sora and Riku have their Mark of Mastery exam in the dream realm in KH 3D, trying to master the “power of waking”.

Honestly, I wish it was longer because of all the fancy abilities you can acquire, since by the time I try even half the stuff, it feels like the story was already over and I had to start fresh with a new character.
Vanitas says that if Ventus destroys him and the X-Blade, Ventus' heart will shatter. Which is why Ventus goes into a coma again. Also at the beginning Sora was a newly created heart, which is how he found Ventus and helped him heal.

I started the same way Johnny did - KH1 and in the order they came out - but BBS is my absolute favourite.
The three characters, their movesets and the way they play in combat, the Mirage Arena, damn, I played this with friends and we had such a good time there.
I would agree with the multiplayer aspect of Mirage Arena...
If the Final Mix version on PS4 had it. Why’d they take it out? Would’ve made grinding for completion a little easier.
2nd favourite KH game (so far) love the additions to the combat that the command deck, command styles and all it's attacks added and especially Shotlocks which are so damn good. Also really love the story, just the tale of 3 young best friends who's lives are utterly destroyed by Xeanorht. Love Xeanorht, he's so manipulative and evil and 50 steps ahead to that point that even though he is thwarted here at the end of this the heroes are comatose, trapped in the realm of darkness or possessed by him using their body to reattempt opening kingdom hearts many times more. Such a shame Leonard Nimoy won't be here for 3. The new worlds are great and they were varied enough per character for me. You feel so bad for the heroes who're just all devastated by Xeanorht's evil genius and they're all still scattered, can't wait for them to be brought back in 3
Well said my friend. Honestly I'd say out of all the Kingdom Hearts game this one by far feels the most Final Fantasy like in terms of it's story. The game play on PSP was just utterly unmatched, even Dissidia Duodecim couldn't touch BBS. It's a game you'd want in any PSP collection. ^_^ Also came with a cool silver PSP unit which is just really beautiful.
sora was a newborn heart when he helped ven (5 years before bbs) and at the end ven in a coma because he destroyed vanitas (his other half of his heart) and then resided in sora's heart to try and heal since sora helped him the first time, basically ven in a coma because he doesn't have his heart just an empty body

Birth by Sleep was my first Kingdom Hearts game and I am so thankful for that. The story might not be one to "write home about" but I found it really easy to grasp in a general sense and I really appreciate that. However this gameplay on the PSP back then was amazing, it was addictive, it was non stop and I can't help but love the hours I spent on it.
Still though ;) Let's bring on Samus Returns because fuck me if it isn't the most free flowing game I've ever played since Zero Mission. These controls are tight, fluid and the exploration never stops. Awesome video John.

Sora can use one by association
Riku had the official "ceremony" that Keyblade users can do to transfer their ability to wield from Terra
Kairi just sort of absentmindedly touched Aqua's keyblade during a conversation, which I guess completed said ceremony??

It's great there are so many different ways to play the game, but when I played it, I felt that they prioritized being flashy over balancing. Like you said, you can get really strong moves early on. But to add that, the super strong abilities generally have really long recharge times, making them obsolete. Instead, you can use broken stuff like fire surge and thunder surge really early on, which can last you throughout the whole game and even in the superbosses.
Also, have you tried ventus and aqua's dodge techniques? Those moves make you invincible FOREVER, compared to sora's dodge roll, or quick dash, which you had actually to time properly to dodge attacks..
All in all, mechanically, this is definitely my least favorite Kingdom Hearts game. It's cool to look at though, at least.

I don't necessarily agree about Aqua being useless to the overall story. If she didn't fight Venitas and Terranort they'd have taken over. Also she's pivotal to Sora and Kairi because of her scenes with them, not to mention her being the one to create Castle Oblivion or her being there for the events at the end of the first Kingdom Hearts.
She was pretty much the main hero, taking care of all the problems in the worlds. Think about it, what did Sora do in mot kh games? He just saved people and fought heartless and tried to help his friends. It's no different really lol.
Agreed. She always fought the biggest bad guys in most stories too (Cinderella - Unversed that killed Tremaine, Hercules - Hades + Ice Titan, Sleeping Beauty - Maleficent's final form etc). Not to mention that she has the final episode, the final mix extended story mode in the world of darkness and her own chapter in 2.8. If anything I'd say she's the most important of the 3, with Terra being just Xehanort's vessel and Ventus being asleep for most events after BBS.
And then we got a hint of Aqua's role in Kingdom Hearts III...

Birth by Sleep was actually the reason why i bought PSP in 2010
Ventus' heart was so fractured from the events at the beginning of the game and the x-blade being shatter also shattered his heart as well because the blade is made up of both his and Venitus' heart. He is now in a coma as his heart has been separated and very damaged but managed to find his way to Sora because of their previous connection. And as for sora repairing his heart in the beginning, I believe the idea is that sora was just barely born or about to be and his heart was traveling its way to reach his body but ran across Ventus. Then a couple of years passed as Ventus trained with the others in the realm of departure and the young sora we see then is him slightly older.

But for me this is my favorite KH game, I like the characters (it doesn't take much for me to like a character), I love the command deck, D links, and shotlocks because it's so fun to use them and increased the replay value for me and made me experiment and it's fun to break; granted it's slower and some of the bosses (particularly the secret bosses) aren't that good.
I got the feeling Nomura has got something out for Roxas and Ventus. Like, they are equally emotionally fucked with way too much in comparison to Sora.

John you have to remember that this is a series co-made by Disney so having a villain that no one knows is evil until the last minute is something to be expected.

12:58-13:56-I've also noticed that Terra, Ventus and Aqua are basically the three main RPG class archetypes you see in a love of RPGS like Dragon Age, Dragon's Dogma, Fable, Greedfall, Kingdoms of Amalur, Skyrim, the first Diablo Game, the first Torchlight Game, the First Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance Game and Mass Effect. Terra is the warrior, Ventus is the rogue and Aqua is the mage.

Aqua does have one of the best themes in the game next to Ventus.

It kinda bugs me how obnoxiously large the subtitles are in this game. I know that it's because it's a port of a handheld game, but they take up a ridiculous amount of the screen. It's like the opposite problem of games having subtitles so small that they're unreadable when not in HD.
