U go to an next town & up to an route & than come all the way back to the professor's lab. U start your journey. U can get an Rattata ( Zigzagoon ), Wingull ( Spearow ), Pidgey ( Tailow ) like Pokemon for your first capture. U go to an town where the first Gym is, but u can't compete yet until later in the game. There's an rehash Viridian Foreat area where u can get an Caterpie like Pokemon that can evolve into an Butterfree or Beedrill like. U can get an Oddish ( Seedot ) or an Bellsprout ( Lotad ) and there final evolutions is required to use an stone. First Gym is an Rock type like Brock was. There's an bicycle route where u can ride though the road only with bikes; like in Kanto, 3rd Gym Leader is an Electric type like Lt. Surge. There's an Grimer & Muk ( Gulphin & Swalot ) replica. There's an sanctuary that looks exactly like the mansion from Kanto & the evil organizations are there. 3/4 of the Elite Four are Ghost, Ice & Dragons types. I can go on.

      I feel like Johnny doesn't really "get" Pokémon. He dislikes the fact that your MC doesn't have a personality, but that's kind of the point. You're supposed to self-insert. YOU ARE the main character (it is an RPG, after all). He also gets disappointed with the way the Kyogre VS Groudon conflict ends, but doesn't really elaborate why or how he'd make it better or something.
      IMO, Johnny cares too much about story in video games, to the point that he seems to enjoy them less for that if his standards aren't met. Sure, that can be a valid criticism if the game puts a lot of emphasis on story (like Kindom Hearts), but not for something like Pokémon.

    Hmm... I feel like a lot of Hoenn's identity was overlooked in this review. There were a ton of memorable landmarks introduced in this region in my opinion, for example: you could climb up and explore an active volcano, a city that is entirely made up of tree houses, a city that resides inside an inactive volcano (which, mind you, can only be accessed by diving underwater and resurfacing after entering an underwater cave), and a town based entirely in the middle of the ocean and made up of only floating logs and wooden planks to name a few. Hoenn was also the first region to have a desert in a Pokemon game. Idk, in my opinion, Hoenn stands out a ton from the other regions and without a doubt has its own identity. Sure, there are things drawn from Kanto like the cycling road and whatnot (but almost all Pokemon games share these similarities now), but it also brought a substantial amount of new and memorable locations to the table as well.

How I saw it, the routes are extremely expansive and encourage exploration with examples like Route 111 (the desert), Route 119, and 120. Jordan. I don't know. The way that the game progresses you makes no sense and the way the game handles is progression is really tedious. Especially with the whole overbundents of HM'S the game throws at you and how some aren't autorized until after you beaten an certain Gym to unlock; with Fly being an example that u can't activate until you beaten the 6th gym. It's becomes even more tedious.
      Like after getting an badge from Rustboro City, there's an connection between an city in an next cave and through the area where meteor cave is at. But there's rocks that u can't get through there and u have to get an Rock Smash for it. So I have to go back near Petalburg to talk the sailor that I rescued it's Wingull to take me towards the next town. That is just one backtracking. But than I go to the volcanic area, to Fallabar Town and to the caves of meteors to stop Team Magma or Aqua. Next after I stop Team Magma or Aqua at the meteor cave, I have to come all the way back to Fallabar Town and the volcanic area where an path to an trolly is opened, than I have to face the evil team again and head to Lavaridge Town. That's also backtracking. And than after my 4th Gym Badge in Lavaridge Town, I have to go all the way back to Petalburg City to face it's dad for the fifth gym. So I have to walk all the way back without having Fly for an shortcut to face Norman for the fifth Badge. Like ok? We're going there already? So I have to do another backtracking again for the 3rd time. And than after beating Norman and receiving Surf, I had to go back to Mauville Town and head west for an new location. That's the 4th time I had to backtrack. Arriving at Fortree City, an invisible wall blockes the 6th Gym, head to routes, meet Steven & giving me his Devon Scope, going back to Fortree City and use it to chase away an invisible wall; which was an Kecleon, and doing the 6th gym. That's the 5th backtracking. After Fortree City, I head back to the route where I met Steven and continuing the path, running through route 121 ( I think. I'm not sure. ), arriving at an town where an mall is at; only realizing that I went back to route 121 ( Again. I think. I'm not sure. ) for an another route that I skip and heading towards Mt. Pyre; you know the cemetary one that looks like the cemetery tower from Gen. 1, where once again Magma or Aqua are at. That's the 6th time I've had to backtrack. But than I have to travel back to the town where the mall is; only I once again realized that the water route is block because of the evil organizations scheme, heading to there hideout and than I have to fly all the way back to that volcanic area where tbe trolly was, where another path to an other evil organizations is at, defeat them and I have to fly back to the town where the mall is at to where the rest of the route is nothing but surfing through water. That's about 7th, 8th and 9th time I have to backtrack again. Granted, at least I can use Fly now to take an shortcut. But still. That's still more than 5 times that I've had to go back & forth and back & forth to the same damn areas that I already travel through more than 3 times already. And it isn't optional. It's mandatory. The game really wants you to head to these stupid craps you'll already wwnt through juat for an new breaching path that we could've explored it from the beginning.
      Honestly, the way that the game handles it's structured of the game is the game's biggest problem for me. If it didn't have any of this bullcrap that the game wanted you to progress, than I would've had an good time with the game. But unfortunately, it doesn't. It is full of padding. And again, combined with the overbundent of HM issues that the game throws at you, it is really tedious. I really didn't enjoyed it as I was hoping it will. I can't handled it's structure. It's almost as bad as Zelda: Skyward Sword was.

    • @HY0
      @HY0 Před 4 lety +7

      @@jjc4924 The HM issue is something I can agree on, but the backtracking wasn't really an issue in my experience. A lot of the examples you shared aren't necessarily backtracking (like the one you gave with the Fortree gym and Steven/Devon scope), but rather a roadblock which is present in almost every Pokemon game. The reason why I didn't have many issues is the fact that the developers intentionally designed routes to be much faster to navigate when coming back with things like cliffs and having you breeze through descending Mt. Chimney.
      I never really found any of these things tedious and as far as things are concerned, almost every Pokemon entry has backtracking. Kanto and Sinnoh come to mind having fetch quests within minutes of starting the game. Sinnoh's being the worst offender with how long and tedious the first route is and how large the grass patches are (mixed with the slow engine, makes it a nightmare).
      With that said, I kinda see where you're coming from; however, I didn't really share the frustration you experienced (minus the HM management). But to each their own.

    • @jjc4924
      @jjc4924 Před 4 lety

      Jordan. I gonna have to disagree with you about there about the padding not being tedious. Because it sorta is. And the way it's design isn't what I call an genius or it doesn't get any faster.
      I can sorta see what you mean by that. But it still doesn't make excuses of how the game decision progression and making me backtrack so many times makes it an absolute chore from my enjoyment. I just wish it handles it structure way better than it should've been. Which is why I'm thankful that the remake of Gen. 3 fixes that problem for me. So that makes it less tedious. It's still there in some extent. But not as overkilled as Emerald. Plus with less overbudent of HM's.
      As for Kanto or Sinnoh having bad padding. I'm gonna disagree in some extents as well. Kanto was at least non-linear, it's optional and doesn't rely on HM's that much. So that gets an pass. And while Sinnoh does have some padding moments, I don't find it nearly as bad as Hoenn was. At least I can use Fly without having to wait for it to autorized at the later 2nd halve of the game.
      Also, I do agree that Sinnoh has it's very slow moments throughout the entire game. But that only happens in Diamond & Pearl.

      The problem with that system is that it requires the Pokémon to be Lv.100 (a hard enough feat as is), and it requires the use of a item that is only gained through RNG mechanics.
      Their solution to a problematic RNG mechanic is to layer it with another problematic RNG mechanic.

      Pokemon Showdown shows just how much it adds so damn much to Pokemon gameplay and how versatille Pokemon now is. Even during the main story, it makes every Pokemon you get feel unique, and therefore more "real." Natures that would be trash in a competitive setting could be made somewhat useful in the main game-for example, a Pokemon that's a fast sweeper in a competitive setting could have a more defensive nature in a playthrough of the main story, and that defensive nature could be what causes that Pokemon to hang on by very little HP and cause you to win a major battle, giving you memories of that particular Pokemon and having it be special and unique.
      But yes, it's absolutely ridiculous how time consuming and luck-based it is to legitimately make a competitive-ready Pokemon, even now.
