Hi there, great video and a good show format. Also I like that you put the sponsors at the end, that way I can watch the video and just leave it on so you get the views on the ads :-)
Link isn’t working
❤❤
I'm here for this. I agree with the sentiment that having a mini-Yahtzee onscreen when he's talking after the fact would be helpful in being able to tell what's what.
You could sense the immediate fight or flight response when Frost compared Yahtzee to an older brother
When the Vietnam flashbacks hit.
Lol he didn't like that
I don’t get it, what?
@@maybefaith23 Yahtzee had an older brother growing up. They did not get along. Don't know where the brother is now though
2:27 timestamp for that exact moment.
A great addition to the roster. It really felt like Yatzhee was actually *enjoying* himself-which should be the point, right? Also, great work clipping out the highlights and editing it down. Jaffa cakes for everyone, well done.
The best part of this was definitely the interaction between yahtzee and frost. Yahtzee's "...ok" had me in tears.
YES 😂
I'm not a watcher of streams myself, I never saw the point. But watching this edited version made me realize something. I got more entertainment from watching them laugh at the safe outside than the commentary on the games themselves. All in all, I think this is a great addition and I'll watch more, for sure.
The bewilderment bordering on disdain on Yahtze's face when Frost revisted the older brother comment (not shown here is an earlier bit of Yahtze shooting down frosts suggestion that it is remotley okay to percieve him as an older brother figure) is fricken hilarious! He just resigns himself to "okay, he didn't get how much I am not okay with this. Moving on".
I wouldn't consider Mario Wonder an inbetween game to hold us over when it's been over half a decade since the last full Super Mario game
Same, I'd consider a major entry.
I suddenly feel very old, thanks for that…
I really think at least since the early 2010s, games media has leaned pretty hard into being dismissive of 2d platformers that aren't Indie darlings
It HAS been a decade since the last 2D Mario game!
@@lukerabon7925 yeah and it's really not fair imo.
I like where you're coming from here. We get to see Yahtzee's first impressions and Yahtzee gets to enjoy something more than the game he had to play all last week.
I can’t describe how much I love the idea of Yahtzee using a version of the Spirit Bomb that, instead of life energy, is fueled by the power of swear words.
Feel like Frost is the first worthy foil we've had for Yahtzee since Gabe
Excellent. Yahtzee had so much more energy compared to post ZP.
Intro music/animation is awesome.
Think 2 games may be the go instead of 3. But I guess if you hit a snag and don't have much to say about a game it could leave you short of content.
All in all A+
Well, yeah, the gaming session euphoria was full on a the moment of recording. It's when he comes down from it that we get the spicy vitriolic review we know and love from ZP.
By the time of ZP, he's had time to digest the game. Let your imagination do the rest...
2:24 what a beautiful shared moment!
you say "beautiful", but it's almost like Yahtzee isn't totally okay with that.
Two episodes aaaaand we're done!
The okay after the older brother comment was perfect
"Mario Wonders what's in the water." is a good one, ha!
Absolutely excellent stuff, love Yahtzee and Frost bouncing off each other, and the format is perfect!
Agree with most everyone else, I love this. Feels fresh, and Yahtz seems to be having fun. Frost is a great choice for 2nd player too.
This show really makes you FEEL like Yahtzee.
So, so glad they kept in Frost’s “Mario wonder what’s in the water” line
I really like this. Micro reviews punctuated (lol) by gameplay fun moments is a winning formula
THIS IS PERFECT: not just clips from stream, but ALSO spliced in comments!
That change of format is a huge win for the escapist and its fans. Well done.
At this point I'm wondering what Yahtzee would want from a 2D platformer. Tropical freeze and rayman legends are the only ones I can think of with more creativity and variety than smb wonder, but not by much. Does he think the genre is inherently flawed or just not for him?
Yeah he immediately labels all 2d entries as just nostalgia fests in between the real games. Not sure why but he doesn't seem to care much for the genre.
I think he’s always gotten way too caught up in the narrative in any consideration of whether a game is interesting or “novel”. Every new major Mario game comes up with new fun gameplay ideas constantly then moves on, where other developers would build a whole game out of just one of those ideas. Conversely, plenty of games which have some interesting or unique narrative to them have painfully generic gameplay, or gameplay which never particularly evolves beyond first principles. From what I’ve seen, Yahtzee tends to be more impressed by the latter, where many of us prefer the former.
Coupled with that, there tends to be a bias against 2D platformers generally and I’m not really sure why.
@@TheHarvbinger That is not the impression I get. Yahtzee calls most narrative games ghost train rides and is the sort of person to skip any cutscene that lasts more than 30 seconds. He doesn't like the last of us, uncharted, god of war, or likely anything telltale or quantic dream. I have never seen him review any game with gameplay intended to serve the narrative and not the other way around where he doesn't complain about it
@@PaperBenni He does routinely convey a view of gaming as an ‘interative narrative medium’ though. I think it can be true that he emphasises narrative AND he’s not into games like The Last Of Us or God Of War which are basically just an HBO mini-series but worse & broken up by gameplay which doesn’t really relate very well to the story. I also hasten to add that TLOU, God of War, Uncharted etc all have very derivative and unoriginal narratives and settings tbh so I don’t think him not liking them hurts my point.
A lot of his games of the year have been mechanically unremarkable but unique in terms of the kind of story being told, the setting, and/or the relationship between the narrative and gameplay. Psychonauts, Spiritfarer, Redirent Evil 7, BioShock Infinite and Spec Ops: The Line all spring to mind. All games I like besides Infinite mind you, but for my money every major Mario release has had more creativity to it than any of them. He just seemingly can’t see past them all being about Mario, Bowser and Peach.
@@TheHarvbinger ah, guess I misunderstood what you meant by narrative games. I never thought of it that way, but nintendo games don't do well in that regard. Nintendo Games are sort of abstract like poker in the sense that if you look at what the actions you are doing represent they completely fall apart. The symbols on playing cards are how they are because of historical reasons, not because they make any sense. Why do people, numbers and an 'ace' whatever that is behave how they do? Why is there an italian plumber genociding the local turtle population who are all invincible except for their weak spot on top of their shell intended to protect them. All mario lore is garbage, nobody is invested in it and the best you can do with it is keep it out of the games. It would be really cool if Nintendo put all the talent and effort behind mario into games with characters and a world purpose made for the games and not being held back by the creative choices from an ancient arcade game. Probably won't happen because people buy anything with mario on the box and changing the brand will cost tons of customers, but one can dream.
Well, this was a delightful surprise! I look forward to more in the series.
Oh damn that spiritual-sequel-to-Freelancer looking game looks pretty good.
"Mom dies and then we commence the search for poon." 🤣
This was great! Frost is a really fun addition to The Escapist
Hearing Frost and Yahtzee's voices at the same time is so awesome
Frost and Yahtzee, i knew right off the bat this was going to be great.
Ok I’m going to go back to imagining frost as a Sage old black man thanks
I'm a big fan of this one. Equal parts stream highlight reel and concise review thoughts is a really fresh format that I can get behind.
This is a great idea for a series. I'd love to watch the streams but I too have 11 minutes of free time every week so I can watch this and still have 4 minutes to ponder the existential crisis.
o7 to the escapist team
"Mario wonder what's in the water" haha - i enjoyed this new stream! Thief Simulator was especially entertaining to watch. Love the intro animation too! I watched the full stream, and you hand picked the highlights nicely. Good job to the editor of this!
Regarding the Bambi conversation - in all fairness, there is a big time skip after his mum dies - he's several years older when the next scene starts. Cant blame him for forgetting about his dear ol' mamma once those deer hormones kick in. It is a bit jarring cutting from dead mum to happy birds trying to shag though - barely enough time for the tears to dry!
I'd like to see Yahtzee try "Mosa Lina" next. It's a puzzle game where the tools you can use to complete a level are randomized with every attempt.
I love the punctuation here in the subtitles
It's all about the singing plants, the thieving stance, and the underpants~
When I was in Australia in 2013, I came across an odd little bar where people were playing video games and drinking. I was getting into a round of _Injustice: Gods Among Us_ when I heard a familiar English-accented voice say: "Well, that's a rather naff game mechanic. Do that bit where you smash him into the wall."
This video makes me feel like I felt then.
Thumbs up all around, this is fun and it's great Yathzee's to hear quickfire opinion on games I didn't know much about (hey, I've also been hankering for some good Stealth action, and I might consider buying Thief Simulator now)
Yup, this is cool, definitely do more if you feel like it! And I'd vote for Frost being a permanent guest on the format, works brilliantly
This was certainly interesting and entertaining- feels kinda like the "end of year catch-up" videos in a way, nothing there to merit a full ZP but giving unstructured but informative snacky commentary nonetheless. Looking forward to more!
nice to hear these 2 talk about these games
It is incredible how Yahtzee's style of "animation" has just become the trademark of all of Escapist. Truly an acheivement
As soon as I saw those giant rings in Underspace my mind went straight to Freelancer
A man of culture!
This looks to be a series worth following. The cut down of the stream captures the content well and the post-commentary gives a bit more of a conclusion to each game's impression on Yahtz. Makes it worth watching even if you saw the stream already
Great addition, this format works so much better imo
I am 100% in for this series
Underspace looked a lot like Freelancer. Like, *really* looked like Freelancer. How fun.
We're not called the spiritual successor to Freelancer for nothing! ;) We have a public demo available if you're interested!
It says quite a bit that a readily available option is to turn the talking flowers off.
This is great! Think I'm gonna enjoy this series!
I really don't care for the format. I mostly had a difficult time differentiating when Yahtz was talking over the video, and when we were hearing him from the highlight. If that could be smoothed out I think it would be a lot better. Or maybe just edit it a little differently
It’s a first edit, will continue to improve. Thanks for the feedback.
I enjoyed this quite a bit since I don't usually get time to catch the streams.
The "something pop" TS cameo made me smile, the rest was a fun stream of consciousness, definitely a different vibe I enjoyed.
Liking this new format! Glad it gives Yahtzee time to play other games 🎉
Also I’m definitely late to the party but this is me just discovering what Mr Cold Takes looks like 😂 the face behind that incredible voice!
Love it. Keep it up
love this format. got me to pick up thief sim 2 as my destress dad game
Yahtzee's unhinged lurid descriptions mixed with Frosts philosophical musings are exactly the juxtaposition I needed in my life.
I like both versions of this. The stream was fun to watch and the commentary in the edit had some good stuff too 😁 Nice work with this idea gang! I hope this series continues for a good while 🙏 Cheers! 🍻
As someone who cant make all the streams I enjoyed this recap
Defenestrate (defenestration) is one of my all time favorite words! Leave it to the Romans to come up with a word that specific! 😂
It's fascinating seeing the "Alpharad" style storyteller narration spliced between gameplay on a Yahtzee vid of all things. I know it's a pretty hot format right now, and I dig it!
I can understand the reasoning for this to be a series.
No idea if this is relevant, but I could use a tiny bit more audio distinction between narrative-Yahtzee and playback-Yahtzee, though I’m not sure how that could be best achieved. (Compressors?) Regardless I loved it and am looking forward to more.
Yea, we're gonna figure out how to do that. We're thinking of adding an animated Yahtzee in the corner to make that distinction.
I second this. Maybe a little overlay like a grayscale over the gameplay alongside the Yahtzee figure?
@@theescapist That was going to be my suggestion.
@@theescapist The rolling background music makes everything blend into one too. (I find the bg music irritating too, but I guess that's a matter of taste)
I love the talking flowers its one of my favorite things about the game
This format is enjoyable.
The creator has left Escapist for the second Wind channel and the escapist have disabled comments on newer videos to prevent this from being more widely known.
Despite having been subscribed to this channel for many years I don’t click on the videos often - but as others have rightly said this feels fresh and new and, frankly, seeing actual gameplay footage can say more about a game than Yahtzee (as quick as he can talk) ever could!
Everything Yahtzee makes is brilliant
Now tell us how you got in to Slay the Spire finally 🔫
Love the video covering all the little games.
I like Yahtzee Kamehameha’ing us with the new intro 🤣💕
Never show me walking yahtzeefied Jack Packard again
i like how everybody started using yahtzee character style on the channel
I just wanna say that the intro is simply superb
underspace is giving me freelancer vibes
🔥🔥🔥
Last one strongly reminded me of Tachyon
Lol the intro is great 👌
Amazing, both have been blessed by having both a voice and a face for radio.
You can fully silence the flowers in mario wonders...
2:25 Frost, these are the type of conversations I imagine having with an older brother.
Yahtzee's face: (눈‸눈)
Underspace gives me a lot of Freelancer vibes, which is great, but yeah it also looks like it needs more time and less hand holding.
One of the reasons we've made the introduction super hand-holdy is because we've noticed, just by watching streamers, playtesters, and about 90% of our players, is that people REALLY seem to struggle with space game mechanics in general. You're free to turn off every tutorial and you can immediately go out on your own as soon as the intro cutscene is over, but most players we've found NEED that level of guidance.
@@Pastaspace fair enough; I'm thrilled to hear you can toggle it, that's an excellent point that not everyone put hundreds of hours into freelancer and instinctively knows how to use a trade lane 😅
If you're putting in the effort to make it accessible to a new audience but not frustrating for veterans of the genre, I'm excited to see how it develops! Thanks for the reply.
@@SparkSovereign Not a problem, it's just something we've noticed in general is that all space games seem to have a weirdly high barrier for entry. Something about 6DOF is hard for a lot of people, so we're trying to do what we can to alleviate that. Even Freelancer, which a lot of people cite as being the easiest space game to get into, has a lot of people struggle with it.
@@Pastaspace I'm really excited to have just discovered Underspace! I can't wait to check it out. Is being familiar with Freelancer enough to disable the tutorial or would I fail to learn some new game mechanics if I do?
@@rikamayhem I'd still recommend going through the initial mission. There's new mechanics (dodging, long range scanning, changes to how docking works) and keybinds that aren't completely the same as Freelancer, though for a veteran they'll be easy enough to grasp.
2:28, yeah how exactly do you take a statement like that.
When I saw this thumbnail I also happened to be rubbing my eye and the top line kind of merged with the bottom and I saw it as Yahtzee Unzipped.
Escapist is going to have an amazing 2024
Heck yea we are! We’ve got another big show surprise coming in a week too!
@@theescapist hmm..
I foresee this series being the Robin to ZP's Batman. Great stuff.
I thought Extra Punctuation was already Robin. Or is Unscripted the second Robin/Batgirl?
Hearing those voices come out of real people is surreal
Underspace legit looks like an unofficial half-sequel to Freelancer.
When can I play it?
Early 2024.
@@Pastaspace Thanks
I’m down for this series. Don’t really have time to watch the full streams, so I like this little edited version.
Love it!! Does anyone know what the outro music was by chance??
I think this would work more if it felt less like just streaming edited down
Oh my is that an Ifrit Hellfire move with the giant fireball Yahtzee made in the intro? 😮
The title made me think of the Singing Bush in the Three Amigos
You should have a link to hefty either pinned in the comments or in the video description.
I liked this video, perhaps a few more words from Yahtzee post-stream to summarise the game and add a little more info about what he liked and didn't like, but otherwise I liked it, this format is a great idea!
I’m enjoying Mario wonder way more than I thought I would. It’s just fun.
Frost's voice is just... god. I love his read of the stories he does but damn.
That intro slaps
More Yahtzee is never a bad thing.
You NEED to call this "Yahtzee : Unscripted" with a colon
Neerd
I will never say no to more Yahtzee. ❤
