I like how Bowser's actions are genuinely socially unacceptable and we can find it off-putting as heck, but then as soon as his plans are over, we still love the guy and pat him on the back as consolation for being rejected. I mean, he's a cartoon character so who cares, but its food for thought. I wonder if its okay to portray a character with such beliefs in a positive way, if its okay that the rest of the characters tolerate him and still invite him to the parties and whatnot. Like the thing that gets me is that its fine because its Bowser, but would it be okay if it were some other less likeable character? Shrugg.
She gets kidnapped to visit her kids. Then they think of some off the wall plan so she has time to spend time with them by the time Mario arrives. Then Mario takes her home and gives him a cake or a kiss on the nose because she's loyal to Bowser but doesn't wanna break Mario's heart or lose the respect of her kingdom.
I love how Yahtzee, doesn't even bother deciding whether the game is good. It's obvious, so it's more important to make a solid video that was vastly entertaining.

Honestly....yeah he does. It's actually rare where he completely trashes games like he used too, and even when he does he's just doing it because that's his persona.
For anyone curious yes you can combine controllers for two player mode. You aren't limited to a single joycon, you can use the pro if you like.
It's been stated that a recurring theme in some of the levels is extreme contrast. For example:
- Metro Kingdom's New Donk City is a large, realistic city, contrasting with the cartoony Mario and Pauline.
- The Sand Kingdom is a desert, but in-game it suddenly gets covered with a bunch of ice.
- The Wooded Kingdom looks like a forest that has managed to grow over a nearby military factory. In addition, all of the citizens there are living watering can robots with sections made of wood.
They tried a realistic Mario once in a movie. It was terrible yet slightly entertaining.

The first live action Mario was Lou Albano, wich could probably supplex Bowser's ass without any power up. Still i really like Bob Boskins i always thought he really looked the part.

Was playing through for the third time the other day and yes, they do directly acknowledge that this Pauline is the same person we rescued in the original Donkey King arcade game. There’s a quiz she gives us about herself and her city and that is one of the questions.
Actually Pauline recalls being captured by Donkey Kong, and she described her expirience as traumatic (at least in the Italian translation)
Also her three items from Donkey Kong shows uo, although I think she only accepts her okd pink purse.
Hearing that intro gets my giblets all tingly.

casey day I feel like the game is actually harder than other Mario games, it's just that you can't run out of lives now and checkpoints are everywhere (except for the final stage)
MAP3Music I just mentioned the lives system because that's something he almost always brings up when he reviews a mario game. I expected him to comment about that and the moons, but was surprised that he only commented on the moons. I never made any comments about the difficulty.
Actually, the only thing he said about mario + rabbids in the samus returns review was that it was half way original. I wouldn't call that a defense.

You do remember that Yahtzee's a game critic, and since a critic is a person who expresses an unfavorable opinion of something and who judges the merits of literary, artistic, or musical works, he's doing his reviews properly. The job of a critic is usually to point out all the negatives, not the positives.
Just sharing this with others because it's made Zero Punctuation 50% more magical for me
If you slow the video down to 0.5x, Yahtzee sounds R E A L L Y DRUNK. It's fucking great.

You can find the dinosaurs in the deep parts of the forest level, and there they're pretty crazy.
There's also one in the city level, but that one barely counts.

Honestly, though, @@colin3ds1, it's not a bad thing. _Super Mario Odyssey_ feels a lot like the _Sonic Adventure 3_ everyone wanted to get, really, and actually had the funding & development time to pull it off right.
Paulene is the same one; the entire city is one big Donkey Kong reference, even streets are named after characters in the dkc series and later you get promotional art from the arcade game on the buildings and such.

The people claiming Mario and Jumpman are different people are WRONG, Odyssey confirms they’re the same person - not only do the citizens cheekily tell Mario to “Jump, man” (which in itself isn’t conclusive evidence), the festival celebrates the city’s founding, which they all claim involved Mario (and the festival literally is a remixed version of the original Donkey Kong, culminating with the 25m level). So yes, Mario and Jumpman have been confirmed as the same now IN GAME, which is as canonical as it gets.
Also you find out it’s the same Pauline in the game itself (not postgame) if you stay in NDC after the festival and talk to her to take her quiz.
Side note: it’s super weird that Mario and Pauline don’t outright acknowledge each other. Like, they don’t even greet each other, their interactions seem to imply they recognize each other and yet they also act like strangers, it’s a weird blend of familiarity and strangeness... I mean, assuming they broke up and now he’s going around the world to rescue another woman, I guess maybe it’s just a case of awkward ex interactions. “Thanks for... um... saving my city...” “Don’ta mention it.. so...” “Yeah...” “...you are a mayor now?” “Yeah... yeah... How’s the plumbing?” “Oh I’ma not a plumber anymore...” “Oh... so... what do you do...?” “Well... I mean... I’ma with a princess... they usually pay me enough when I have to rescue her once a month...” “Ah yeah... the princess... she seems... nice... wait, once a month?” “Yeah... Bowser always is cooking something up-a... like last Saturday when we were playing golf-“ “You play golf with your girlfriend’s kidnapper?!?” “Well you named your city after your kidnapper!” “...whatever, let’s just keep this professional. Oh, so because it's Mario and Yahtzee enjoyed it that means it's the best game of its year? Never mind the fact that Yahtzee chose not to put it on his top 5 list that year at all in favor of A Hat in Time, no, A Hat in Time is an indie kickstarted game and not a recognized franchise, therefore it's not as good as an official Mario gammon-soiree. Maybe broaden your horizons a little and realize that just because something belongs to a well-established franchise doesn't automatically make it better than anything else.

well the dragon boss with the absurdly detailed and gritty textures and art designe sure do make it look like a dark souls boss, just the dificulty that still is like most marios from 2005 onwards

It really DOES look like a Dark souls boss. It comes out of fucking nowhere and is SUPER DETAILED. It sticks around for all of maybe 10 minutes before you kill it in (you guess it, 3 hits) and then it's gone again.
He never said "Mario odysee is the dark souls of Mario games" he just said the Dragon boss looks like a dark souls boss, which it does

This is my favourite singleplayer game in a good while, but that's probably because I've not played a Mario since original Gameboy days & it really nailed all the best parts of that nostalgia whilst adding the hat possession mechanic that gave it a chunk of new gameplay. Almost worth buying a Switch just for this imo!

I get the feeling that tacking on the Mario world theme pattern to every game undermines it a bit. We definitely have said grasslands deserts forests and jungles, but each one has a complimentary theme. and Each world can stand out on its own, unlike New Super Mario Bros 1 2 Wii and U, that always recycle assets and color palettes. And to be frank. I think grasslands is a very poor representation of any world. If it's a large space and has grass. it might as well be called grasslands. And the only Fire world in the game is either also the Food kingdom, or a small segment of the moon kingdom.

In galaxy, the second player can also force player 1 to jump too. Always gotta sneak at least one way in to fuck over the other player. For the hell of it, we played through a few levels once where the other person controlled movement and I controlled jumping that way. It was an interesting way to play.
Pauline DOES mention Mario rescuing her from a giant ape so yes its the same one!

Actually there is a way to differentiate main series Mario games from the Mario spinoff titles. All the main series Mario games start with “Super”: Super Mario Bros, Super Mario 64, Super Mario Galaxy, Super Mario Odyssey, etc. Save for Super Paper Mario, all the spinoff titles don’t start with Super: Mario + Rabbids, Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games, Paper Mario, Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga, etc.
In conclusion, when referring to the main series games, say “A new Super Mario game’s came out!” (Like calling it Legend of Zelda and not Zelda), and when referring to the many spinoffs of Mario, just say “A new Mario game’s came out!”

Not Donkey Kong, or the old Mario Bros, seeing as it was more of an arcade game of jumping over barrels and killing turtles, but when the game went from arcade classic to home classic with Super Mario Bros where it became a side scroller, that’s when it adopted the monicker “Super Mario”.
Yeah but it's still a main game, without it, no super would have been. The Super Mario game was the initial spin off given its totally different style. The precursor is still a part of it.
So technically The Adventure of Link is not a main Zelda game. It's called Zelda II, not The Legend of Zelda II. I kid mostly I get what you mean with Super Mario.

Mario Odyssey has surpassed the Galaxy games as the best Mario platformer, IMO.
I think we should start tallying how often he references Dark Souls in a non Dark Souls video. I know it's his favorite game and it is not a bad thing but it is still worth noticing.

So in summary, aesthetically all over the place but not in a bad way, and as is a complete given with Nintendo and 3D Mario gameplay is highly polished, fun and extremely varied.
You love to see it. Nintendo are simply peerless. This is excellence in game design (and I'm not even a Mario fan).

Honestly I'd be tremendously excited to see someone with a sign like that, it'd either mean they've got a sense of humour about themselves, or they are entirely unselfaware. Either would be amazing to see.

I feel like tons of visual tones is a huge risk for a mascot character like mario and paid off huge. It makes him feel less like a clean, corperate Mickey Mouse character when he can be found walking through a crowd of real humans or next to a photo realistic dragon.
it took my five fucking years to catch the Middle Earth: Shadow of War reference.
There is only one time the two player mode is actually beneficial. The volleyball slog. Cappy's faster speed and lack of momentum actually plays to your advantage here and makes two really boring moons slightly more bearable.
I have to say, I disagree with your "grasslands desert forest ice world fire world boss" bit. Unlike, say, New Super Mario Bros, very few kingdoms in Odyssey simply use a "vanilla" terrain as their theme. The forest world has this interesting fusion between industrial metal and lush vegetation, the desert world has a Day-of-the-Dead flair to it and is frozen when you first find it, and the snow world has a bizarre obsession with racing. I also don't know why you dismissed the "wildcard" worlds, which are quite creative!
You can tell there's nothing really wrong with this game that even Yahtzee has to spent three-fifths of his video on a tangent that has to do with nothing at all.
It's kind of annoying that you have to complete a main objective before all the collectibles in the kingdom are unlocked. And Mario is a little bit more slippery than I'd wish.
Other than that... yeah, flawless.
Honestly two player has been very useful for me and my family! I let my niece and nephew take turns as the hat and they fell in the game and mario in general! They can't stop talking about it and they wanna play every time they're over!

What exactly is the "fire world" of the game, if the Luncheon Kingdom is instantly tagged as "a wild card"? For that matter: What the fuck is the "grass land"? The Mushroom Kingdom you unlock after you beat the game? I know, it's a joke, but ... a really confusing joke, since it seems like just flat out wrong.

It makes me so mad that no one is ripping off Shadow of Mordor. Everyone should be copying that game!

Why stop there? The bucket from Color Splash, the Lakitu from 64, the squirt gun from Sunshine, the minis from Mario v DK, the flyswatter from Mario Paint, the pixie from Mario v Wario, the Fairies from 3D World, the hands from Mario Maker...
Just making sure nobody misunderstands, you can play co-op with any Switch controllers you want, not just the single joy-con, two joy-cons each or a pro controller is totally fine. Also if the second player (and the first player too, that would also help) knows what they're doing Cappy can be op as hell. He can jump and move around way faster than Mario, can make Mario jump much higher than normal and can turn bosses into a joke since on top of all that he's invincible and can ground pound at any time in the air. The second player can even use Cappy while Mario is inside an enemy or object (which honestly is pretty weird since throwing the cap on them is what transports you into them) and he can make you jump from one captured thing to another without even jumping out yourself first, or he could do lots of other stuff like beat enemies in your way or collecting coins and hearts.
Btw this was an entertaining video as usual.
