I feel like the second son had the most appropriate answers. He was still calling his mum beautiful and without making 'excuses' (like saying 'it happens')for the men on the street. He understands that it's disrespectful to women.

The son who said "it happens" wasn't making an excuse; in fact, he said he hated it immediately afterward. It was simply an acknowledgement that yes, cat calling does happen, especially in the case of an attractive woman. I'm a woman and I get cat called. No, I don't like it, but it happens.

If he just said “It happens” then yeah that wouldn’t be okay. But context matters. He said “It happens... but I hate it.” He’s acknowledging that there’s a problem here that has become common place. I’m not saying normalizing this behavior is okay but he’s not doing that and in a video he voluntarily agreed to participate in to raise awareness, I don’t think he needs to get dunked on for saying it. Pick your battles. That way, when someone who is trying to justify this behavior comes along, you’re stronger and more likely to be taken seriously.

As I live on my own as a 19 year old now, catcalling does not happen as much as when I was 13. This video reminded me of it, and thought I would share.
In my small town, the 7-12 grades were all combined. I was a reserved and quiet person who was insecure; When I was 13, I had already hit puberty young so had some curves and not as much baby fat on my face, and I looked older than even some of the 17-18 year old girls. I HAD to pass through a certain hallway to reach my English class during 5th period.
Well, in this hallway most of the time these SENIOR guys would whistle at me as I walked by. This would only, of course, happen when I walked to class alone, which was most of the time. If someone walked with me, or other people (especially guys) walked in the same hallway they just stared instead of being vocal. Somehow, the staring was all the creepier tbh.
Looking back, I wish I had the confidence to at least glare at them. Now a 19 year old, in my area that I have moved to for college (which is still small), i get occasional stares but it does not happen all the time (at least the stuff i notice). My seventh grade year was when i experienced the more "vocal" creepiness. Freaked me out when these guys who were five years older than me and at least a foot taller than me (I am 5'10") were being major weirdoes. This is actually the only time I have ever shared this uncomfortable story.
I am honestly so happy that my confidence grew in high school to where I am a no nonsense type of person.
Sorry this was long and 5 years too late, but oh well. And anyone going through this, talk to someone. I wish I did.

I highly dislike when guys are like "what can you not take a compliment?" "Can't a guy tell a girl she's pretty?" "Can't we flirt?" Like YES you can but not every time is the right time. If a girl is minding her own business walking down the street trying to get somewhere and you yell "Hey sexy!" "Hey beautiful!" It's like wtf. You don't even know her and you're yelling like a maniac at her. It's disrespectful and you're only talking to her because of how she looks. If you want to flirt then go to a bar, a club, school, etc. And don't yell say some thing like "hi I'm ___ what's your name?" or "hello beautiful how's it going?" (Lol idk how to flirt like a guy) but something like that. And if a girl rejects you then she isn't interested JUST LEAVE. Okay rant over.

+natalia berron There are always going to be jerks. Men, women, it doesn't matter. When it started out, women were fighting for the right to vote, to be independent, to expand their job options and education, which was great. However, the movement brought about a ton of terrible things for women like being proud to be a "slut" and treating stripping, prostitution, and porn as if they were empowering women. Barely anything, getting wasted, acting aggressive, sleeping around- those were things the women who started the movement never wanted to happen. What started out as a dignified movement of ladies seeking legal equality, has turned into an entitled, aggressive, hypersensitive, destructive hoard of girls who want to act like fools without any repercussions.. That's not equality, that stupidity. Saying hello or how are you, or some variation of "you look great" is hardly "assault". I totally get you have the right to be offended by whatever you want, however, you don't have a right to blame your insecurities on the crudeness of others. Don't let immature comments like that define you or hurt you so deeply like that. You're special and I mean that. We all are. If someone catcalls you, you can either 1. ignore them and keep walking. or 2. address them and end up having to deal with an even longer conversation with them. It's not worth it. Take the compliments and ignore the crude remarks is my suggestion. js God bless!

So one time we were visiting him and we went to the Westwood CPK and got food ya know ya know. I was there with my mom, my older brother and my twin brother. (I'm a girl btw) My mom was 49, my older brother was 20, and my twin brother and I were 13. This man sat a the table next to us. Idk how old he was, but I think he was around my mom's age. He started complimenting her and saying how well she raised her children even though we were bashing each other's heads in like the immature children we were. She was also wearing her wedding ring so idk how he "didn't" see it. I'm never going to forget what he said. He was like, "Hey mama, wanna go get a coffee sometime? Just give me yo numba." It was kinda funny because my siblings and I just froze and stared at him and he got so uncomfortable that he ran to the bathroom and an employee came to the bathroom door asking if he was okay. Absolutely disgusting, but funny that he got the public humiliation that he deserved.

A few months ago my friends and I were walking down the street in Tokyo and these group of guys zoomed past us in their car and yelled “you’re beautiful!” And honestly that made me happy. For some reason I get really uncomfortable when it comes to people staring at me, following me and catcalling but those guys made my day. I can’t explain it.

It’s one thing to go up to someone and say “hey look, I just wanted to tell you that you look really nice.” And then leave them alone, if they ignore you, they are just trying to protect themselves. but it’s another thing to call out stuff like “hey pretty lady” etc and touch them and follow them.
