- Ride along with Formula One World Champion Fernando Alonso during the opening laps of the 101st Running of the Indianapolis 500 in 2017.
McLaren Racing announced recently that it will contest the 103rd Running of the Indianapolis 500 in 2019 with Fernando Alonso at the wheel.
Competing in his second Indy 500, Alonso will attempt to become only the second driver ever to secure world motorsport’s unofficial Triple Crown: victories at the Formula One Monaco Grand Prix, the 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance sports car race and the Indianapolis 500, the pinnacle race of the IndyCar Series. The feat was achieved by Graham Hill in 1972 with his win at Le Mans, following his 1966 Indy 500 victory and four triumphs in the Monaco Grand Prix. - Sport
He's simply quits Monaco GP to drive Indycar for 500 miles and almost nailed it! Fernando is a beast and is now getting podiuns at age 42, quite old for an F1 driver.
Looks easy on tv, but 200 laps must be brutal
Never has to me. Any motorsport.
Yea I’m sure the 50+ guys who have died at Indy thought it looked easy too.
Not to mention open wheel oval is basically the only remaining auto racing category when drivers regularly die. So, add insanely dangerous to the checklist too. Anyone who has raced knows the camera captures basically none of the speed.
IndyCar does not have power steering as well. Drivers have to physically turn the wheel.

Yooo this is crazy. As a new F1 fan and a guy who used to go to the Indy 500 every year, it’s wild to think that I probably saw multiple F1 legends race for 500 laps when I was younger and never knew who they were
It's 200 laps, the 500 comes from how many miles it is
Can't believe we are gonna see him again🙌
nah
This aged well
Alexcov welp
nope

Great to see. I think race start onboards are very interesting but rarely shown.
Indy1977TX , it gives a whole new perspective; especially for Indy.

Its fucking scary how close and how fast these dudes are actually driving.
And they need to nail those turns just right or it’s into the wall
Hope he has more luck in the years to come.

Starting 3 wide is madness!

Look TK overtaking 4 cars in the first turn, i love him
Yeah him and will power had big balls to send it 3 wide into the first turn😂
Wd love to see him win

I hope he gets another chance at the 500
@@nostalfanQue dices si antes de la rotura del motor estaba en los puestos delanteros adelantándose con los líderes, iba a luchar claramente por la victoria pero el motor Honda decidió parar

the good OLD days 🥲
Alonso este año si se puede. Animo!
If Fernando every wins the Indy 500 and gets the triple crown I think he would have a case for being the greatest most complete driver in the world
I hope he return again after his f1 days end for the second time.
I still believe he could go all the way and get the triple crown
Bom dia !!!!
Fernando é fantástico !!!!
Muito obrigado pelo vídeo e parabéns pelo canal......
VERY NICE - interesting how they have to maneuver that steering wheel !!!
@@mabra33 Ah yes I guess you conveniently forgot that these cars go over 220mph in extremely close proximity, as well as the fact that over 60% of the IndyCar schedule is made up of road/street courses.
That's why there are tons of different racing classes. If you do not enjoy one, don't watch it, it's that simple.
@@mabra33 Actually, 800 times. The race is 500 miles, but the IMS track is 2.5 miles long. So the race is 200 laps, not 500.
Show.. F. Alonso, grande piloto.
his driving is perfect
Wow what a start
He slipped a bit at the start. But just as soon as he got settled he was really good
He was?
@@Dragon83GT yeah up until his engine failes
I remember watching this race, the the first indy I'd seen (was really good, I'd recommend to any race fan) and yes he was really good, you could tell he was new to ovals though. Just like in this clip, after every green flag restart he seemed to lose at least 2 places. But I guess that's just experience and timing on ovals. Had the pace to win though.
Watching this really makes me miss and how I also unappreciated being able to watch the drivers in the cars. They are fighting that wheel hard and you can't see that these days easily due to the screen
He needs to try again
Just goes to show how difficult that first lap is, man
"the engine feels good, much slower than before"
Amazing
Unusual to see the rocket starter lose places in the first lap. Rolling starts quite different eh?
Are u serious? Anyone is going to win a 3h race in the start...
@@javiersanchez384 Exactly, he was being smart. It means nothing to be safe and give up a few places at the start. If you do the right things with your setups and adjustments over the 3+ hours, as he did, making up those places is a given. It’s being in the top 3 or 4 with ten laps to go with the best adjusted car that matters. He was running 7th on lap 179 and moving forward like Sato, just not as quickly, when his engine failed.
these dudes are insane.
Alonso is the true goat, he’s done Indycar, 24hr lemans and F1
Kanaan the start restart master
He should try race in F1 to see how he does there.
Is this when Button peed in his seat?
You can see him flinch when Will Power zooms bye on the start
The physical stress that the body deals with, that alone is too much for regular human beings. These drivers are truly special.
Imagine turning the wheel at 220+ mph.
With no power steering too
Seems like he uses deeper line than other drivers
His experience with dirty air in F1 means he always tries to get further inside than the driver in front, it gets clean air on the front wing and gives more grip despite being tighter. A lot of other F1 drivers don't do this, but I've always noticed that he does
Very good top top
Rollin start threw him off.
0:24, he was NOT ready for Will and TK to blow by him into 1.
Tbh it looked like his primary goal was to not wipe out in the opening laps, he leaves a lot of margin everywhere.
He is now back in F1
Wow, Real racing 3
Have you seen how the prompter was ahead of him?
Please..
Where i can find the Full Race With Audio..⁉️⁉️
CZcams has it
Alonsooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
Why did the camera pan right at :33? Is it controlled remotely?
yes, IndyCars have onboard cameras that can rotate 360 degrees
Is Alonso was trying to get the triple crown?
Yes but mostly for the show
Longer clip would’ve been nice...

Just got done watching mario andrettis. Laps at indy. But it was 1966 at 165mph. Than i watched this omfucking god. Im getting old. 58 turning 59 oct 25th
You've gotta have absolute balls of steel to race wheel to wheel at maximum speed around this type of track. This is far more scary than f1

I could watch the whole 200 laps with out commentary. 🤫

If the engine hadn't blown I'm sure he would have won.

That race is anti clockwise. Isn't It? It must be hard for his neck.
Alonso was racing in the Indy 500? I thought that he was driving the pace car ........ :)
Nascar driver did way better in previous indy 500, hmmm.
Damn I'm out of the loop. I thought Alonzo was in the F1 grid
He skipped Monaco in 2017 to take part in the 500
Alonso is trying to win the coveted Triple Crown of Motorsport. He has an F1 Championship and Le Mans Championship wrapped up, so now he has to win the Indy 500 to make History.
@@jcampo4He also won at Monaco twice
@@jcampo4 you're not exactly wrong, but the triple crown is based on race wins rather than championships. He won le man 24hr, monaco, and now needs indy.
Why was he letting everyone past without contesting or defending?
Gp2 engine for f1 and gp4 for andycar
It’s a YOKE! A YOKE!

I wouldn't want to be a right front wheel of an Indy car.
