  • This was the first video footage of the nest. I've compiled 10 minutes of the best nest building moments from the 1st day. My microphone pop filter lasted about 10 seconds.

I have watched a beautiful and dedicated pair of pied currawongs in the inner west for the past 2 breeding seasons build a gorgeous nest, initially starting with 4 successful eggs with hatchlings, and of which my neighbours have destroyed their raising of their young both seasons back to back and I have had to step in with WIRES to rescue their babies from my neighbours deliberately hurting them . It has broken my heart and I love the mumma and dadda bird so awfully much! Just last night I had to organise an emergency rescue.... I am tears over seeing the parents so desperately still looking for their young babies today! The babies were less than one week away from flying away with the parents .. my neighbours are horrible individuals... Last year they tried to organise an illegal cull with a pest controller and this year ran over one of the young babies within hours of them leaving the nest....when the baby was clearly to the side of the driveway in our garage (it's a massive apartment building) I am so grateful for all the wires carers! I can't stop crying listening to the parents calling and so actively searching for the babies! I begged my strata this morning to put up some bird spikes to prevent them being hurt by my neighbours again - when in fact I just wish I could have the neighbours punished instead! Last year's rescue - I had the privilege of taking the last baby (there were 4 initially) into my apartment and taking care of it.. he was a beautiful little boy who grew to such a strong handsome bird and was successful in his soft release. Last night I had to have 2 babies rescued ( there were 4 initially again.) They are beautiful and friendly, dedicated birds! I miss having the babies in the garage so so much! Their parents are confused and searching non stop for them... Just so sad!

That's horrible! I can't imagine anyone being able to even think of doing such a thing!
I'd absolutely lose it if anyone were to hurt my Currawongs, I've helped raise a pair of siblings (With the help of their actual parents of course). But if anything were to happen to them I don't know how I'd cope. I hope your neighbours realise that what they're doing isn't right at all. There are far more humane options to discourage birds from nesting around houses that don't involve hurting or killing them.

Are they breeding already over there? Where are you located? I followed a pair in Sydney-Pyrmont they started mid-spring, the chicks fledged early november

Yes, these 2 Currawong do seem to be getting in early. I'm expecting them to lay eggs around the beginning of September so this nest will be mighty impressive by then. I am in Adelaide, South Australia.
