  • The Atheist Experience 21.20 for May 21, 2017 with Matt Dillahunty, Tracie Harris, and Chris Johnson.
Call the show on Sundays 4:00-6:00pm CDT: 1-512-686-0279
We welcome your comments on the open blog thread for this show.

CZcams comments are at present disabled in our channel, to the displeasure of some. However, each video has a prominent link to the associated open thread that appears on our blog. In the past we've tried opening up the channel to comments, but we found that a very high number of episodes wound up being flooded with a combination of spam, long winded apologists, and various obscene or misogynistic comments directed at various hosts by people with an axe to grind. This seems to be the nature of CZcams comment sections, in our experience.
We do moderate the blog, the same way that we moderate chat during the show, as well as comments on our Facebook group. For comment sections that are "officially" associated with our show (and, to a much lesser extent, channels that may give the unintended appearance of being official), we prefer not to play host to straight up ad hominem attacks and bigotry. As a general policy we do not block commenters simply on the basis of disagreement with our point of view. However, we do prefer discussion environments that don't actively chase off more reasonable contributors.

    WHAT IS THE ATHEIST EXPERIENCE?
The Atheist Experience is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared at a non-atheist audience. The Atheist Experience is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop and support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing and friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of state-church separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists and to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

Thanks to the atheist community and the responses. Thanks to you guys, I’m starting to feel liberated from my lifelong fears of God and hell.

There was a mountain climber that climbed K2. Someone asked him what he would do if there was an avalanche. He said "If it happens, it happens." That's kinda how I feel about hell. If there's a douchebag God that sends me there, there's nothing I can do about it so if it happens, it happens.

I think fear of hell is really unresolved childhood fear of being punished. My dad was cruel to me, physically abused me even. He was a man of his word though. If he promised a beating/punishment then he’d deliver. Now, when I think of Hell, the scary bit about it is the fear that it’s inevitable. Like with my dad, he would deliver on his punishment. So when I fear hell, it’s really tapping into those emotions.

I was actually going to make Tracie’s comment when I started watching the video. Christians (and others) are so traumatized by fear of hell that it’s hard for them to reason their way out. They’re victims of massive, systematic spiritual abuse.

Pascal's Wager is actually an insult to God (if there is one) as it implies God is an unjust, unfair, cruel, unkind, irrational, thoughtless, and savage dictator that punishes those who didn't believe based on bad evidence (faith).

The "which Hell worries you" made me curious. Many non-Christian religions DO have hells. Islam, Norse, Egyptian, Roman, Greek. But I didn't know about one of the current Biggies. Hinduism. So I googled it....
Naraka (Sanskrit: नरक) is the Hindu equivalent of Hell, where sinners are tormented after death. It is also the abode of Yama, the god of Death. It is described as located in the south of the universe and beneath the earth.

Suppose I am a preacher and you think I am making a lot of money by lying to small children.
If I am not lying, I will be rewarded in Heaven and you will be punished in Hell.
If I am lying, I will not be punished in Hell, but I will still live a comfortable life.
So my best strategy is to continue lying to small children.

As a life-long, never indoctrinated in any religious theology, My first question would always be: who told you that stuff and why did you buy into it?
The hosts never do, most are former theists, and once the damage is done, all are forever scared and tainted.
I know how it was done in the overwhelming cases, of course. Great effort are expended to get 'em as young as possible, long before kids have any real experience in the outside world, nor developed the natural, very nessessary skepticism to protect themselves from such scams.

Matt says "... not accepting it because there wasn't sufficient evidence...". Matt lives his life as he chooses, making up his own purpose and own morality and anyone who argues for God is a threat to that freedom. As long as he controls the judgment, there will never be sufficient evidence.

    • @matthewharrison7127
      @matthewharrison7127 Před 4 lety +1

Arguing for a god doesn't threaten that freedom at all. Even if someone could demonstrate the existence of some god and Matt accepted it, Matt still has the freedom to evaluate that god's ideas and morals and agree or disagree with any of it. He isn't bound by whatever that god declares to be. But first the god claim must be sufficient to justify the claim that the god exists, and so far they don't get even remotely close.
