    We welcome your comments on the open blog thread for this show.
    ► freethoughtblogs.com/axp/
    CZcams comments are at present disabled in our channel, to the displeasure of some. However, each video has a prominent link to the associated open thread that appears on our blog. In the past we've tried opening up the channel to comments, but we found that a very high number of episodes wound up being flooded with a combination of spam, long winded apologists, and various obscene or misogynistic comments directed at various hosts by people with an axe to grind. This seems to be the nature of CZcams comment sections, in our experience.
    We do moderate the blog, the same way that we moderate chat during the show, as well as comments on our Facebook group. For comment sections that are "officially" associated with our show (and, to a much lesser extent, channels that may give the unintended appearance of being official), we prefer not to play host to straight up ad hominem attacks and bigotry. As a general policy we do not block commenters simply on the basis of disagreement with our point of view. However, we do prefer discussion environments that don't actively chase off more reasonable contributors.

    MYTH: Slavery was confined to the South.
    America always had its abolitionist movements, but slavery existed in every colony. Massachusetts, in the northern United States, was the first colony to legalise slavery. And in 1720, around a fifth of New York's population were slaves. George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, among other founding fathers, owned hundreds of slaves.
    It wasn't until after the Revolutionary War that the abolitionist movement began to be a significant political force. At that point, it was up to each individual state to outlaw slavery. Vermont was the first state to abolish the institution, and more northern states followed soon after that. By the Civil War, it was only the states under the Mason-Dixon line that hadn't abolished slavery.

    • @richdandanell2911
      @richdandanell2911 Před 5 lety +14

      But still ..... Slavery is wrong and an a all knowing god should know that . Any god that endorses it , is not worthy of worship . That's the main point . But the history you relate is well worth knowing about . Nothing is as black and white as religion portrays it .

    • @brifox
      @brifox Před 5 lety +6

      I don't think anyone believes that slavery was confined to the South. Admittedly plantation slavery certainly was, since plantations in the north were just a bad idea. Most northern slaves were domestic, which is also why abolition gained so much traction there. When you only have one or two slaves and they do stuff like wash your clothes, it's easy to give them up as opposed to giving up a labor force of literally hundreds.
      Also, when trying to argue that slavery wasn't confined to the South, might not be a good idea to use the example of two Founding Fathers who were from the South themselves.

    • @TmRnBn
      @TmRnBn Před 5 lety +11

      Nor was it confined to the U.S. Or Europe. Or Eurasia. Or the far-east, near-east, north and south. Slavery has been on every continent (except maybe Antarctica) and virtually all human cultures. Slavery was a pox among the tribes of Africa, the indigenous Americans, the Legions of Rome, the horse-tribes of the Khans, Cossacks, and Mongols. Though it has been largely curtailed, it still persists if not in name, in essence, and in all but the previously excluded land masses. None of that changes the fact that slavery is immoral and anyone (or anything) who supports it or makes excuses on how it might be done within the codes of a culture should also be considered immoral. Slavery is a diaper-stain from our primitive past, as is religion, war, and disco, and they should be expurgated permanently.

    • @ichigogeek
      @ichigogeek Před 5 lety +4

      This is more of a comment about consumer society than about slavery in the west but I think it'd be a fair comparison to say that sweatshops in Africa, Asia and India are somewhat a kind of slavery for the first world, maybe a member of our society doesn't directly have slaves, but in order for part of our culture to function we need that population to work for us in conditions that in our world would be considered inhumane.
      Any thoughts? If I'm misrepresenting the issue I'd be glad to know.

      @@josmalig-on2907 I once asked my Mom, "How long have I been a girl?" I'm physically a male. Her reply was "Always since you were born." I then asked her "Why then, did you never treat me like one?" She said, "I must have had blinders on." Well, I know what those blinders were. We were a fundamentalist independent baptist family, and my parents were, at one point, missionaries in my early childhood. My Mom did admit though that her biggest mistake with me was to send me to a private christian school. My problem there was not the teachers, it was with the other students. Being called faggot, and fairy fag was not something I would wish on anybody. I had been so sheltered (being that my parents did not want me to know any such thing existed) I had no idea what they were talking about, other than it was an insult. After my parents got divorced, my Mom became my best friend. She helped me deal with much of the pain that came from this, and other sources. Once I was ready to deal with this, she was always ready to listen. One thing I am grateful for was, when my Mom died, there was nothing I still needed to share with her. I just enjoyed being by her side until the end. There is much more to this than I can share here. I have left comments on other videos - if you can find them - which would shed more light on this. It was, however, a part of my journey.

The ones that hurt was my Dad's suicide (he thought his family had abandoned him, though that was not the case) and the murder of my brother. Those hurt much worse. If you wish to know about the murder, look up Joe and Michelle Gable on Google. The location is Helena Montana. My sister in law had been talking to me about suicide. Little did I know that violence toward one's self could turn outward and become murder. My dad never confided to me the difficulty he was in. I was renting an apartment at the time, and could have given him a place to find his feet again had he only told me what he was going through. For that matter, he could have had his retirement even without his company funded retirement (the company went bankrupt, taking his retirement with it). I was willing to do that, but he never told me. And no, my dad never knew what I told my Mom. He died much too early for that conversation.

    An interesting thought - something tells me this caller has never considered how he would feel if HE was a slave and was treated as the bible permits. In such an instance, in his mind, I'm betting he's always just automatically assumed he would be the slave-owner and not the slave. He's never considered the opposite possibility - I wonder if he would change his views should that scenario be posed to him...

    Matt, for me, I think this was your best argument regarding the Bible's support for slavery. Yes I watched your video on slavery but somehow I found this discussion more passionate. Christians are confused, desperate, and embarrassed when it comes to the issue of slavery in the Bible. Every argument they try to use makes things worse for them. I feel so sorry that they are trying to defend something that asked people not to kill but that thing was afraid to forbid slavery because nobody was going to listen. Poor heartless, confused, disoriented, and stupid being, that thing.
