In this unique woodworking project I turn a classic Magna Doodle plastic toy into a stunning piece of fine furniture. This nostalgic magnetic drawing pad will soon serve as a message board in my workshop, adding both practicality and style. With my woodworking skills and tools, I removed all the cheap plastic and replaced every single part with some beautiful walnut and maple burl, creating a modern take on a traditional project.

Love the flame of solidarity for Bourbon Moth at the end.
Very cool, but why don't you show a bit more of the final product?
Totally agree
For comments bro
Patreon tier?
Agreed! He didn't even show it being used.
No Magna Doodles where I grew up. We all used Etcg-a-Sketch!
That Delete me ad is super important, the same exact thing happened to me and my aunt about 2 years ago. She and my uncle were ready to send the money until they said they would send someone to pick it up. Can’t be too careful
Bonus points for you guys for watching Friday, that movie was awesome
Great project, great video, except for the end. The reveal was literally 10 seconds long before one of those popups covered up a quarter of the screen. I don't know what everyone else likes, but watching a 14 minute video to see a 10 second reveal was like waiting for an hour at disney to ride a 30 second ride.
That shop towel that spontaneously combusted that is on fire at the end is hilarious… oh bourbon moth 😂😂
If you know, you know
Glad to see you overcame your hatred of the router for this video. Great project!!
101! Big Pappa P is too tough to die. Good work old man
I like what you did with the MagnaDoodle. Way to think outside the box. Love that you were "watching" Friday in the background. 😂
Thanks for the complex! I never knew I needed to check for spiders in my ear protection. Now I won't be able to ever wear them comfortably, knowing there's probably a spider crawling into my ear canal
In the spirit of retro games, would be great to see some combination of the woolywilly, AI, and your face!
Love your work, your passion, and your you!
That Burlin' is 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Great video! love the ending lol
Respect the walnut… respect it!!!
11:50 At first I was like this is a wild way to segue into the Squarespace sponsorship...
Best damn way to open a box, ever!!!
Love the shout out at the very end. :D
Now that's how you open a box!
Burl-in! 😎💯👍
Awesome build. Had a Magna Doodle when I was little, child of the 80s. Best toy ever.
The rebound game build was awesome
Must have gotten a little chilly in the shop at the end! 🔥
West Burlin. Classic!😂😂😂😂
Next up...solid walnut trampoline!
Man I was loving these transformation videos but 15 seconds of the final product is insane. 😵💫
I'm going to be better about it in the future. I promise!
For a second there I thought you were going to veneer the walnut with nicer walnut.
Your commitment to the bit is strong. #favoritethingintheshop
Top notch transformation!
"OH!! my neck AND my back...." background easter egg. 😉
respect the walnut
The shop safety tip nobody talks about: Always check for spiders.
“I gotta pocket full of quarters and I’m headed to the arcade!”
Saying pocket so much reminded of this classic.
3:00 "I don't like the way it looks, I don't like the way it smells..."
Super cool!
I really like your refurbished drops and that burl looks stunning. As always great job and super funny content
It's fascinating to observe the transformation of this object!
Great design, love the #doodlemonster and thanks for the reminder to watch out for the combustible rags
This is another one of the projects you’ve teased us about on the podcast, and it looks amazing. I’m looking forward to hearing about and then seeing the next one. Cheers David.
0:11 Just over ten seconds into the video and already got me laughing out loud. Well done, David! 😄😂😄
If you're gonne be extra with your toys, be extra extra. Another beautiful and fun upgrade. Can't wait to see what's the next item to get the Piccuito treatment. Thanks for sharing!
Now that is a very cool project instant family heirloom from a cheap plastic toy
Awesome
Love how much fun you have doing this stuff! Great video!
I always love the movies that are playing behind you while at the table saw
And while I'm guessing you did to give variety behind you, I just realized it's really good it is behind you instead of in front. As the table saw is a tool you definitely don't want your attention elsewhere while using.
That was very cool. I always thought it’d be fun to do something like that. My dream project was to make a wood case for a laptop computer.
This is great! Even though you have Friday playing in the background. I love that movie, but EVERY SINGLE DAY since it came out someone says to me, "What up, Craig?", like they're the first to ever think of it. And god help my life at work on a Friday.
😂 haha. sorry man.
Listen, Craig, I know you don't smoke, but it's Friday. You aint got no job. You aint got nothing to do...
This was a fun one! I like the concept of this “bucket” of videos of yours - making something different and beautiful out of an ordinary object!
Oily shop towels! 😂
I owe a lot to this channel, including my newly unlocked fear of ear spiders 🕷️
Stunning!
Really cool project! I’m not a big fan of your plastic to wood transformation videos, but I underestimated this one!
I love that you didn’t just make a wooden version of the toy, but made it into a “cabinet” that can be hung on a wall and be a functional piece of wall furniture with a fun twist by bringing in the nostalgia of the toy instead of just inserting a white board or chalk board.
My only additional critique is that the doodle monster doesn’t really come though. If it’s not too late, I’d add black dots in the knobs as pupils and either add eye brows or a mouth to give it some expression.
David, you sir are a weirdo. I mean that as the highest form of a compliment. In today's crazy world, we truly need more weirdos. Keep doing you, brother ❤️💛💚
That came out so nice Dave! That little monster makes the piece!
So very cool it turned out amazing
At 3:41 it's giving Mr. Rogers Picture Picture vibes. :D
🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤WoW WoW 🤩 fantastic
Great project
That was surprisingly less complicated than I expected. Taking apart childhood toys is like meeting your heroes haha.
Jimmy’s baby voice probably has something to say something about your Berlin burl veneer over walnut! Cool project, David! What’s up with those skateboard blanks!? You have my attention.
Edit: Oh man, your rag at the very end. 😂
Such a great concept. Gets m' creative juices flowin'!
Side note: I'm sorry, but that laser is NOT way easier and faster to cut that groove than a router. I promise an average woodworker could cut that simple groove out with a router faster than you could even get over to the laser, turn it on, and program the shape.
Great video. Such a clever concept. Love the outcome. Gorgeous and useful! Mahalo for sharing! : )
I never thought to cut veneer that way on the table saw (I don't have a tonne of experience with veneer); I like to throw it in the laser and cut it out that way, but nice to learn a new method that isn't "use a razorblade and a ruler and hope for the best."
Dropping some bombs! 💣
Amazing work, Dave! Really well done!!! 😃
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
A wolf spider once surprised me in my respirator. Now I check every single time.
Dude. This is my nightmare!
I believe Dave has far too much free time on his hands!😆😆😆😆
I know installing hinges is a pain in the... But the video seemed somehow unfinished, like the last 2 minutes were just cut off by that promo.
Also, seeing how you grabbed the pen just laying on the display it reminds me that you have forgotten to opt in som nice groove to hold the pen actually inside the box, there's a plenty of space around that display 😉
Nice build, Dave. Maybe a little heavy for the toddlers though.
I've stayed awake all night thinking of this: someone please explain how glue can dry in a vacuum bag but not in a sealed bottle?
ha! Now I'm wondering the same thing?!?!?!?!?!
@@MakeSomething must be science or magic.
Ya got something going on in the background when you're finishing that pen....ah ya know what it's fine...it's fine.
@@jeremyspecce #TeamBourbonMoth
Ya know, dude. I was never worried about the spiders until you mentioned it. 😊 Now it’s like my childhood fear of quicksand.
OMG... I swear we're brothers from another mother. I never put on my earmuffs without checking for the spiders. LOL
😂 Yes! And a firm Stomp on the gloves that I left on the floor the day before 😂.
The same thing happened to my grandpa. They told him I was helping someone move in PA and got arrested for drunk driving. They told him not to tell anyone because I was embarrassed. They even Google street viewed his local bank and told him to use the drive-thru. Luckily he called me before doing anything.
Missed opportunity for a Dee-lite "Groove is in the..." reference. Made in Burl-in!
Your sponsorship story happened to my wife's grandmother as well. Except they didn't have anyone's info. The scammers just grandson and then she asked if it was me and they said yes.
I'd love to see you remake the game crossfire the ad for that game has been living rent free in my head since the 90s.
Great video, David! Looks like you had so much fun with the project.
That "always check for spiders" tip you dropped... You have no idea how relevant that is to life in Australia 😂
Also, I feel this video was quite lit. Especially at the very end of the video 😉
Can you add 10-15 more seconds of b-roll of the finished piece? You jump from the add, 5 seconds of beauty shots then links to other videos which darkens/takes up 75% of the screen. We wanna see more of the finished piece you worked so hard to make. 😢
Science clamp!
DAMNNNNN. Lol looks good 👍
have a little spontaneous combustion at the end there? can't see it over the video card or whatever it's called.. haha
I feel like that little bit at the end was intentional...😄
Always check for spiders! I had that happen with my headphones in my office I my basement recently. **shudder** So so so unnerving
You sound like the VP. I’m going to veneer the wood with veneer for the purpose of veneering.
A lil dig at Bourbon Moth at the end?
More of a dig at AVE
I have now seen fancy.
how do you get your miters?
Was this channel previously called Drunken Woodworker? He looks a lot like the woodworker from that channel.
Many years ago, yes.
Those were the days.
It's almost like how the singer from Foo Fighters and the drummer from Nirvana look similar.
That veneer is surprisingly pretty, especially after you oiled it to really bring up the colors.
Bro, I expected a doodle on the inside of the final piece! Looks great though.
Who else got that remix stuck in their head? 😂
Spiders in your headset? New fear unlocked 🤣
Uh oh... David has entered the combusting rag drama...
I don’t think the knobs were straight 😮. But that’s minor bc the project was awesome. DO MORE ONLINE BUYS!!!!
Are we supposed to believe you didn't get arrested and needed to be bailed out?
Unlike Australia where the spiders will kill you, North American spiders are just like raspberry kisses from your mum.
😂😂
Ozzie spiders also don't fit in your earmuffs. 😂😂
I walked into my workshop this morning, wiped the over night spider webs off with my hand and got to work. Just a normal day in Australia.
@@Goalsplus wait until they come to use an Australian dunny
@Anthony Seiver I've worked with people from other countries and they do indeed get a little freaked out by our blase attitude.
That box cutter...
...the burning rag
Off topic but what are your thoughts on your CO2 R400 laser is it worth the purchase? I am in the market and just wanted to pick your brain. Thanks
