THE AUDIO ISN"T PERFECT BUT THIS WAS OUR FIRST 'ZOOM WATCH PARTY' AND RECORDED IT...
** Thank you Naj for editing! 💚💚
As I told you during our watch party, this is one of my favorite movies of all time and after 35 years I am STILL furious with the Academy for completely snubbing this film. 11 nominations, *zero* wins. Disgraceful.
I TOTALLY get it now!!! YES... they were robbed 😳
You are EXACTLY right!!! There was not one weak performance in this film. Every actor put on the performance of a lifetime for an IMPORTANT piece of literature turned into an incredible ( and important ) movie!
@@StoptheInsanityofRegressivism Precisely!!
sameeeeee omg! i hear they are making a remake of it! soooo Excited! 💜
The NAACP protested this film. That's why it didn't get any Academy Awards.
I'm not ashamed to say that this film makes me tear up every time that I watch it. It's so underrated.
This is one movie that will forever make me cry. I cry when the sisters are separated, then especially at the end when they reunite.
Same. Been watching it since I was a kid and it’s still one of the best movies I’ve ever seen.
Same. Been watching it since I was a kid and it’s still one of the best movies I’ve ever seen.
I'm glad you watched this. It doesn't get much attention these days, but it's a film everyone should see at least once!
This and 12 years a slave are some good movies
I watch it a least once a year.
I cried when this movie came out in theaters - and there are scenes where I still cry and my cousins and I still recite some of those iconic lines...
In theaters I didn't even know
Mister’s mailbox is a character unto itself
This movie ALWAYS makes me cry, even when I watch a reaction video. Whoopi and Oprah were just amazing in this movie.
I was so young when I first saw this film. As an adult I look at them and I think Nettie & Celie were twin souls/soulmates. Soulmates don’t have to be romantic, they were really each others other half.
Exactly!
Man. I don’t think I could have watched this with y’all. I’m just over here weeping while watching this edit. And then her calling her sisters name at the end breaks me every time. 😭😭😭😭
You have to go and see the musical for this, it is so heart wrenching and the bit where Celie said "I'm poor, black, I may even be ugly. But dear god I'm here" they made the song I'm here based around the last bit of that one phrase.
I saw it with Jennifer Hudson!
This is one of my top 3 favorite movies. I remember watching it on TV when I was 12 with my mom. It was the first movie that ever made me cry. Such a powerful story.
This film deserved ALL the academy awards!
Most people do not know the Steven Spielberg has adopted a couple of African American children. He also directed a great movie called Amistad. About a slave ship that successfully was overturned by the chained up stollen Africans
Appreciate you taking the time to watch how my people experience life after slavery. It's still a struggle mentally but we have to be strong as if our ancestors endured slavery. The pain is past down in the DNA due to epigenetics. The Willie Lynch letters started this. They all deserved Oscars.
"Your" people? If I referred to you, or anyone like you, as "your people"... would you be offended by that? If so... doesn't it bother you to refer to it?
"if our ancestors endured slavery" If? If your ancestors were enslaved, they endured it, and I'd have to say that they did survive it. Hence... here YOU are!
Epigenetics *determines* which function a human cell will have, for example, whether it will become a heart cell, nerve cell, or skin cell. I don't believe that has anything to do with your pain. Life experience, and it's result, are not passed down through DNA.
The Willie Lynch Letter is *an account of a short speech* given by Willie Lynch, in which he tells other slave owners that he has discovered the "secret" to controlling enslaved Africans by setting them against one another. Whatever that has to do with what you're talking about.... I'm sure I don't know. But, epigenetics probably wasn't known in the early 1700's.
This film came out the year I graduated high school. I missed the theatrical release but had heard all the buzz & critical acclaim surrounding its 11 Oscars nominations the following year. I rented the video (VHS tape, not a DVD - LOL) & after the first watch, it became one of my all time favorites. The acting is incredible, each played their role superbly & so convincingly. I had only seen Whoopi Goldberg one other time & that was her comedy special (film of her Broadway show). It was phenomenal to watch her switch characters in her one woman show, but it was still comedy... To watch her in this film just blew me away. Hell, even Oprah killed it! Of course I had to read the book after seeing the film adaptation. What an epic tale & the ending of this movie always makes me ugly-cry every time I've watched it over the past 36 years, even watching these reaction videos makes me misty eyed. I get to experience seeing it for the first time again through others' eyes & watching them become fans themselves. The movie is an emotional roller coaster journey. It sheds light on a dark part of history & how difficult times were back then for women in general. But women in the African-American community had it so much worse, from both white men (racism) & those in their own households (domestic violence against them & the children).
💜 the book & movie. It got robbed at the Oscars 11 noms.
Great reaction. I don't trust anyone who doesn't cry watching this movie. My sister & I use so many lines from this movie. If she makes a cake, she says "you bet not touch that cake. I done fixed that cake so I know if it be messed with." I think every woman I know was pointing those three fingers at their husbands. I'm looking forward to the upcoming musical film version.
😂😂😂
You told Harpo to beat me!
This is one of my favorite films. One of the themes regarding the color purple, IMHO, is that it is a constant reminder for the characters that there is something wondrous in this world.
I've been watching this movie since I was a little girl in the 80's and I still cry.
if this movie does not make you cry, you have lost your soul.
An awesome powerful movie that still makes me cry.
Hey girl hey!
Hi there! I'm enjoying the reactions! I'm cracking up laughing because I had my finger on the comment button and then you flashed the msg saying you know Harpo is Oprah backwards! Lol! You know how us commenters love to have the answer for something!🤣
the color purple is also a broadway musical. the original broadway production lasted from 2005-2008. it had a revival in 2015. the musical will be adapted into a movie
Spielberg was hesitating to direct the movie. He said" I don't feel right about this, I don't know anything about black people to do such a movie " .....Quincy Jones said " You didn't know anything about Aliens either. But you still made that movie"
Lol I love to watch women watch the part when Miss Celie is going to 'shave' Mister! She didn't even get to nick him was the best reaction EVER!
Finally more people watching this
A beautiful sad story... 💜
It’s called Harpo productions because Harpo is Oprah spelled backwards. This is one of my favorite movies 💛
This was made into a wonderful Broadway musical with some incredible songs. Now there’s going to be a film version of that with Fantasia Barrino cast as Celie, which she played for a time on stage. She’ll be a knockout. Can’t wait to see it.
This is one of my all time favorites, can't wait to catch your reaction🥰
I've watched this film so much, we are family. Unfair binging overlooked as it is. As outstanding in every way, one could ask for. The book also terrific; fills in a lot of background.
One of the most amazing films in Movie History
Crying tears for this reaction
I'm so glad you decided to watch this! I can't wait to see your reaction.
Love seeing your reactions to one of my all time favorite movies
celie may not exactly be “educated“ but she’s not unwise
One of my favorite movies of all time! I know it word for word!🥰💜💜💜
If u read the book celie is a lesbian and in love with shug
I’ve watched this movie since I was a child seeing you watch it for the first time and your reactions touched my heart so deeply 🙋🏾♀️🤎
Awe hugs thanks for your reaction to this classic.
Hope you enjoyed it! 💚
I would have loved to watch this movie with you. We would both be laughing and crying together ❤
I haven't seen this since I was a kid and it first came out. I definitely want to go back and rewatch it as an adult.
Steven Spielberg Should Have Won An Oscar For Best Director
I met the director at the market in my hometown in Canada.
I first read the book...I was young and didn't really like it. Then, I watched the movie and cried so much. I've seen it so many times. It's an amazing movie.
I had the same experience, I Read the book before the movie, I didn’t think they could make a movie out of it because the subjects were so raw, then I saw the movie and it was fantastic, then, when I heard about the short on Broadway, I I didn’t think such a RAW material could be on Broadway as a Musical but when I did see it, I found it to be absolutely beautiful.I am happy to know that it well be in theaters😢
First time on your channel and I’m OBSESSED. Subscribing now
Welcome!! 💚
Hi!!!! I also cried with this movie NICE VIDEO REACTION!!!!!!
I cried with you and I've seen that movie so many times. I feel like a total wimp.
I will forever love this book and movie
A true classic.
Celie spit in the glass of water. you had put your head down, it happened that quick 🤓
Great Performances By Everyone In This Movie
I love this movie. Still makes me cry every time. I'll have to join you guys one night. I just always miss it.
We're watching Steel Magnolias tomorrow.. I'll try to remind you 😉
That sign she did to him when he was going to hit her when she was l leaving was the evil eye
NOW EVERY BODY ON YOU TUBE REACTING TOO THIS MOVIE
A line people miss "She won't make you clothe it or feed it" Celie can no longer have kids. I'm assuming it's due to her having babies so young by that creep.
Where is that line? How did I miss that?
@@marleinasmom when the step father says "I'll let you have Celie" he then goes to explain that she's been "spoiled" and won't make him clothe it or feed it.
@@jasm5213
I went back and found it afterward... ugh. Gross.
@@marleinasmom I know. It made my skin crawl.
Now now let's not lose tempers lol and by the way if miss ((see-lee) sorry can't remember how her name is spelled)) if she kills him she gets the death penalty most likely....depending on which state she's lives in
I love your reactions❤
Thank you 🙏🏼💚
She spit in his glass of water
Oprah spelled backwards is Harpo
I know... I pointed it out in the video 😉
Enjoyed your reaction to this. Have you seen 'Fried Green Tomatoes'?
Where are you from, btw?
Yes I have; I own that movie! "Secret's in the sauce!" 🤣
I live in North Carolina
💜💜💜
I'm the book her mama ask her who is she pregnant but she say it's Goss baby
Hey Mum, quick question, did your 100k youtube frame come? :)
It didn’t; she had copyright strikes, that was why CZcams didn’t give her the silver button 😔😔😔
@@najmaaustria1841 oh :( I'm sorry
@@najmaaustria1841 That's terrible! 😠
@@chaosiscoming9184 I was looking forward to her receiving that Silver Button because American Mum truly deserves it
@@Destyn2b 😢😢😢
This was a good reaction if you haven’t seen it it u can react to Tyler Perry’s madea goes to jail movie
Harpo is Oprah backwards 😂😂
Yepp 👍🏼
She spit in his water, that’s why she wanted him to drink it.
She missed it in the actual time she was reacting to it; she looked down for a split second 🙃
👍📺👀
Whoops got distracted so much in this movie but I fine her attractive then all of them
21:44Pa or not the man was still her step father which makes what he did an act of incest and he was sexualy abusing while still married to her mother...a big no no regardless since your not allowedto have relations with a woman will her mother is still alive and married to him....also its bad that the man was messing around with a woman who was not his wife....or in this case not a woman....a girl. Bottom line what the man did was disrespectful and embarrassing to himself and her to say the least....shameful man
Ya know... it's odd watching you react, with a 2022 attitude, to something that occurred close to a century prior to your birth.
As I'm sure you're aware that, had you been reacting at the time these events took place... your reaction would be quite different, because you would have been a product of those days.
You're reacting as though these events are happening now, as you watch, as though some of the characters had the audacity to behave like that, in this day and age.
My opinion is NOT here to insult your intelligence, nor to have anyone think that you couldn't sympathize with anyone in a different era.
It just LOOKS out of place. Actually... it's kinda funny. This was just an observation. No harm meant.
I wonder what those characters would have thought about us, if we could visit them, after the turn of the century.
I love your reaction to this movie but, the quality sucks.
I agree; this was a ZOOM video reaction...
@@AmericanMumReacts oof sorry love also hope that didn't take away from the fact I still found ur reaction hilarious and fun😁
Not all women put up with stuff like this.
At that time, women often didn’t have a choice, especially black women
@@moonfisher Exactly.
So easily to say. My ancestors didn’t have the choice back then. Remember the 1930’s wasn’t too long ago
@@Epiphany428 Right? Women in general had little to no rights back then. They were not even given the right to vote until 1920. But black women, or any women of color? Forget about it, especially in the deep south of Georgia. Who were women like Celie supposed to turn to, the all-male, all white police force? The corrupt and racist court systems? About the best recourse they had was to kill their abusers and hopefully be smart enough to make it look like an accident.
@@Epiphany428 1930s Wasn't to long ago? Its Been bout 80 Some Years Ago 😅
Oh woman grow up
Or, you could ~lighten up. 😉 See how that works both ways?
I bet none of you hear Celie getting rapped by her stepfather during the opening scene. Go back and listen real closely! You will her sex noises!
