Sophia didn't go to jail for punching the mayor, she went to jail for punching a WHITE man. Celie had no interest in becoming desirable to Mister. She didn't want to be like Shug because of that. Shug was the closest thing she had to finding love like she had with her sister.

I did not know he was the mayor. Maybe he was just pointing out he was the mayor.
The shot where Danny glover separates them.. the director told the girls that no matter what he does DONT let go of each other.. the scene was shot once and it was perfect and heartbreaking
Actually, in the making of, Spielberg said they had to do the scene multiple times, to get all the different angles, and he knew how hard it was on Danny Glover, who hated having to do it. But you are right, he told the girls don't let him separate you
I was pregnant in 1986 when I saw this movie. I was crying my eyes out. So was the man sitting in the row in front of me. I still cry.
No matter how many times I see this movie, I am in tears when Mister forces Nettie to leave and then again at the end when the sisters reunite.
My favourite film of all time and can't believe I met the director, Steven Spielberg, randomly in my home town in Canada
Spielberg is a master at capturing emotion and making the audience feel empathy for the characters. Between his and the actor's talent and the score, holding back tears is impossible! LOL
The woman Sophia worked for as a maid was a Karen. This aint new. Its in the story because Karens have been around since the beginning.
this movie was nominated for 11 oscars and it won NOTHING. such a travesty

She told him to beat her because that's been her entire life. It's all she's ever known and it's normal to her now, disgusting as it is. 😞
I've watched this movie a million times and I think when people watch it, especially with commentary (which is great), they miss some cues. Especially so with the ending, which is set up perfectly. Shug is singing and hears her church sing, and decides then that "God Is Trying to Tell Me Something," which she sings and reunites with her father. Mister, sitting on the porch can hear the singing, and God is trying to tell him something too. That's when he decides to "Do right" by Celie, for once. Remember, she told him. "Until you do right by me, everything you even think about is going to fail?" So he does, leading the way for Celie to be reunited with her sister at the end. One of my all time favorites films.
I've seen this movie a billion times, one of my favorites. I believe the reason Celie told Harpo to beat Sophia was that that's all she's ever known. Also, the actress who played the sister is actually a real princess from Ghanaian royalty. She was married to a famous director.

I think it's great that you're teaching your son to treat everyone with respect, however I caution you to not ignore others' rich culture and heritage. it's okay to recognize that someone is african or arabic. it's okay to notice our diversity, that's what makes the world interesting. the problem comes when we use that diversity to treat others with disrespect or put other down. our differences should be celebrated, not seen as a negative. that being said, I really enjoyed your reaction to this and I hope you enjoyed this movie. it's a heavy one with an amazing message.
I 100% agree. Peopleks differences should be celebrated, not ignored. That’s how we learn from each other.
I always say that. There is nothing wrong with being different. You having a different style, culture, language should not be feared or hates. Celebrate, recognize and appreciate other cultures.

It wasn't really about men gawking over her but more about having a voice. In the book its very highlighted. When Celie's father told her to not say a word, it deeply marked
and made her almost mude, even with all the suffering she endured. Her letters to God was her way of not forgetting her own persona and seeing Shug Avery sings and their relationship is what started a change of this dynamic.
Your commentary and reaction really suprised and touched me. I always figured Aussie guys wouldn’t care about black women and the pain they experience. Being black OR a woman is hard enough but both is truly a difficult and often invisible experience in this world. Its healing to be somewhat seen for a moment. This kinda restored my faith in humanity.
I’ve seen this so many times and it took me to be an adult to realize Mister paid for Nettie, Olivia, and Adam to get into the country. That part now bring me to tears every time I watch it. I quote this movie so much lol… The actors all did a phenomenal job.. they were so deep into their characters.. this movie should be studied in acting classes
Don't feel bad, I just realized that Nettie probably sent the money that was with the letters.
She told him everything you think about will fail until you you do right by me. And he got her family home from Africa. He did right by her in the end.
All Ciely knew was getting beat. That's why she told Harpo to beat Sophia. It was literally all she knew. That's how Mister handled her.
Very good reaction. This story sadly mirrors from my great grand mother growing up in the fields of Mississippi and the south. She was 14 married to a 30 something old man. When he died she had to marry another old man because she could not own property.

In this timeframe there were a lot of (then) politically correct (now would be slurs) terms for African Americans.

I’ve always wondered what Tina Turners version of Shug Avery would have been like if she would have took the role when Spielberg offed her the part. The Color Purple was filmed in North Carolina about an hour from where I live in South Carolina. They got the dialogue correct. My grandmother was born here in 1901 and a lot of the words and phrases said in the film was exactly the way she spoke.

It took him until the end of the movie to cry. My entire face is saturated for the entire time the movie is on every time I see it or read the book and the musical makes me cry hard too! Tough guy not crying until the end 😂
Shug’s dad (the minister) didn’t talk to her because she had children out of wedlock by Mister (Albert). Mister wanted to marry her but didn’t because his father didn’t approve.

Celie was actually gay and in love with Shug in the book. Steven Spielberg said he regrets not including the more romantic aspects of their relationship in the movie
You can blame anti-LGBT sentiment in the 80's, with the help of the Reagan administration.
...Also, I don't think she was actually gay, as she was finally feeling love and affection from someone FINALLY in her life... It just happened to be a woman. If anything, I think her sexuality is a little more complicated in the book.

Its possible that had she not been treated badly by men she still would've preferred women anyway or even identify as bi with a preference for women either way. the opportunity to explore was robbed from her by the time period and the abusive men surrounding her

I remember as a kid my aunt called & said Spielberg was shooting across the street from her house-about an 1-2 hrs outside of Rutherfordton, North Carolina? I have no idea which scenes cause never got 2 ask b4 she died, but remember visiting as a kid & she had the most beautiful flower garden imaginable! I need 2 re-watch...it's been yrs.Good movie!✌ ❤

Fate tried real hard to break Sofia's spirit. Celie's confrontation with Mister revived her!
Thanks for doing this! This movie has always had a special place in my heart. Even as a young child, it was a video I often gravitated to when browsing the video store, and frequently left the store with me.
Once I’d grown up I watched again and suddenly realized it is a bit strange movie for an 8 year old to watch repeatedly.. definitely has some heavy subject matter for a child. But I guess something in my soul (even at that age) understood the message of humanity, and finding eventual happiness and self-respect despite such a terrible life.
I always shook my head at the irony of the fact that it was her husband’s MISTRESS that was the first person who treated Celine like a human being and with any respect and basically the only one who told her she “mattered” so to speak.

I'm so glad you were able to experience this movie. Something to think about, Albert Sr (Mr.'s father) was more than likely born into slavery. Slaves were controlled by fear and intimidation ( beatings, lynchings, separation from family). How would his father know anything different? I'm certainly not making any excuses for their behavior, but they did what they were taught to do. If you want to control someone then you beat them. It's the same reason people spank their children, to control their behavior. Just food for thought. I love this movie and always will.
Given your reaction, I’d recommend you read the eponymous novel the film is based on. It’s by Alice Walker and won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction. You might also enjoy the film _Moonlight_ (2016).

God bless you. My sons best, best friend they meet in 2nd grade and remained this way till my son went to live w/Jesus. They were not the same race. I was intentional about my son coming up w/lots of other races. God rest his international soul. Continue raising your children to not be a respecter of persons and to Love as the want to be loved.

Shug Avery was actually drunk and also delirious from illness when she first met Celie. When she was young, she was in love with Albert, but her father would not allow the marriage because she came from a very religious family. Of course sugar ended up following her music career and was quite successful at it, but her father than disowned her and by then Albert was married to another woman. Highly recommend, you read the book🙂
I think it was implied that she had to give another one of her and Albert’s children to her parents , and that’s why she showed up at the house delirious and out of it , that’s also why her first question to Celie is “Got any children?”
That last scene of this movie will make anybody tear up

Loved this reaction! Thank you so much for this. One of my personal favorites from Steven Spielberg- remember going to see this at least six times with friends and family when it was released in 1985 . Nominated for 11 Oscars and unbelievably did not win a single one 🤔 !
If you're wanting more 'serious' Spielberg, I would suggest "Empire Of The Sun" (1987) and of course "Schindler's List" ('93). 'Empire' has a VERY young and impressive Christian Bale in one of his first theatrical films. Again, Great Job! 👏 👍
The book obviously goes into a lot more detail, but Celie told Harpo to beat Sophia in the beginning because she was jealous that Sophia was strong, from a loving family, and could hold her own against a man when she couldn't. Also, Celie and Shug Avery did have sex that night. Shug describes how sex is supposed to feel good and connected with somebody. Completely different to what anything Celie had experienced before with men, so she decided to show her. Celie loved her a lot.
It was because being beat was all she knew.

Anyone who is confused about Celie and Shugs relationship, here it is in the book they are lovers. In a way Celie finally discovered what genuine love was besides her sisterly one with Nettie. In the endof the book they live out their lives together.

I saw this for the first time in July of 1986 at a US government owned theater in Wiesbaden Germany
This is an awesome movie!! A movie I would love to see you do a reaction to is 12 Years A Slave. It is a difficult movie to watch but it is based on a true life story of Solomon Northup who was a free man and illegally sold into slavery pre-civil war times. Very emotional and eye opening to the horrific reality of the lives they had to endure back in those days. It won an Oscar for Best Picture in 2014

People always mean well when they say they are color blind, but trying to be that way isnt natural. Like Shug Avery said, it pisses God off when you walk past a field of purple flowers and you dont notice them.
The problem isnt seeing color. The problem is seeing color and assuming things about a person based on that.

EXCELLENT reaction to such an amazing film. For me, it feels a BIT dated and some parts seem a bit overacted... but it's really excellent. There are SO MANY lessons to get from this film and it can hit people in so many ways. I see that some people in the comments are say you didn't get parts... well my answer is that you're seeing it through your eyes as a modern man in Australia so of COURSE you will have a different respective. But, you got so much meaning from the movie anyway! In the end, it IS about forgiveness and redemption. This is a difficult film but it's beautiful as well. Thanks for watching it. It's a GEM of African American cinema.

This was a first time for me to see this movie to be honest I haven't seen it exactly, but I just now watched it with you, and through your eyes. It was hard to watch. Another hard movie to watch that I can think of is. Radio
PG 2003 ‧ Drama/Sport. and then the other one two. A Time to Kill
R 1996 ‧ Drama/Thriller. And also, An American Crime
R 2007 ‧ Drama/Crime. But all good movies and a good add on. So, if you get the time and haven't seen either check them out.
