My buddy showed me this one drunken night and I couldn’t for the life of me remember what song it was I knew it was a Johnny Cash Dylan cover but I could not remember what song. He committed suicide before I could ask him. I stumbled across this today. I am so glad.
It took me years to really appreciate Cash's music ... the man really sings from his heart. I am going to have to find a copy of his autobiography for 2014. I am glad I found this on CZcams. Frank
I remember went from ND to AZ in 76' in a 72' Cadillac, all painted white with that bright red leather interior. Dad was just listening to JC on the 8n track the whole way, and dad and I were just singing along. About the time we had went 1600 miles and just about to Flagstaff, that old 8 track started over again....... mom grabbed it and thru it out the window and said "Johnny hitchhiking from here!" .......... I sure miss mom!!
LOL I'm in the middle of "Johnny Cash The Life", the bio by Robert Hilburn. (Very nice.) So, I decided to give my eyes a rest and do some listening on CZcams . . . then stumbled on your story, right off. Fits right in with the book. Yea! I'm thinking I would like your mom and your dad. Thanks for sharing. What a hoot.
Cowdog... that's hilarious. My mother was the one who got me on Johnny Cash along with my uncle Kenneth. He's the one who taught us how to play guitar and sing
Some of my favorite songs of Johnny is when he does Dylan - love his duet with June "It's Ain't Me Babe" and his duet with Dylan, "North Country Girl."
A great song by two of our nation's greatest treasures. I love the simple, spare, haunting melody. Johny Cash and Bob Dylan will still be loved centuries after Toby Keith, Faith Hill and their ilk are long forgotten.
For the first time ever, I get Johnny... He could be me, but with a voice and talent... He just tells it.. It's everyman's story, and song. Rhythmic and timeless.
It's tough company Cash has at least one other version, Clapton has at least two and counting . Odetta, Elvis and others , noto speak of various instances of them with Dylan.
I love how Cash, a country man, takes Dylan's city-boy lyrics and tweaks them to his liking. From "babe" to "gal". That's how folktales are passed down!
he was not a city boy.. he was working at a logging camp in the north woods at the time... he didn't write that stuff because he was a rock and roll star... he got there the hard way, brother.. still.. more than likely
@@SEHC95 Dylan grew up in Deluth MN and moved to the city to branch out and increase his sphere of influence. When he released his first two albums (which this song was on), he was still a son of folk, the influence of the city and city life wouldn’t really appear in his music until Bring It All Back Home and Highway 61.
This is incredible. I am a big fan of the Dylan and Jerry Reed versions, but this is like the middle point between them. I'm sure this was the version Jerry knew first.
My FB friends are tired cause I keep sharing Johnny's songs every fucking day ! every single day ! can't stand a day without listening to Johnny ! even the thought of it makes me sick :P ;)
The best you'll do is on Martin Scorsese's documentary on Dylan- No Direction Home, this is the only live footage to emerge as yet of Cash's performance in Newport, this clip is in the documentary. The show was recorded on tape, but not all of it filmed, or at least the film has not fully emerged if there is more footage. Which i kind of doubt there is.
I always wanted to sound like that when I sing... took a few more miles than expected... but.. sure enough.. sounds good to me;;☆》 . harmony with a lifetime hero
hi...I'm rick Carew does not have the same ring of authority and authenticity.. hi I'm Johnny Cash.. gave me shivers the first time.. and every time since
Interesting artist Johnny Cash. Not that great a singer. Not really that good looking. But the intensity he could bring to a song made him mesmerising. The very definition of having an X factor
I have to say that I have heard many versions of this song and Dolly Parton does it best. The other versions don't even come close to being as good as her version.
The thing he is singing into looks like a massive lolly, ken those ones that are made of like sherbit n have two different sides, usually white n green
***** If pissing on someone else's tree makes it your own, then Cash succeeded. Cash didn't even make new lyrics, he just re-arranged, and edited Dylan's. This was kind of like making La Giaconda "his own" by using Golda Meir as a model. Nevertheless, the lyrics are inferior to Dylan's. Cash was a singer, and a good one. Dylan was not only a singer but a poet. Cash, not being a poet, made a hash of it. If he "filtered" the lyrics through his own experience, he was using an inferior filter.

I'm sorry about your friend
I feel so lucky to be part of America that had, Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, and so many others.
Roy Orbison. Waylon. Williams… real rock. Real country. *AMERICA*

Amazing!
You can see how gaunt his face is from drug abuse and the rockstyle life taking a toll on him.
Still at his best here.
The GOAT.
so glad he recovered from the pain that was showing in his face at this time of his life -
I don't need to think twice! I know that I enjoy his music, the world is at a loss without him.
May you sing in your next life.
RIP. Mr. J. Cash.
Straight but Johnny Cash was not only a legend but a very handsome fella!
Wish there was a full video for this
A great song by two of our nation's greatest treasures. I love the simple, spare, haunting melody. Johny Cash and Bob Dylan will still be loved centuries after Toby Keith, Faith Hill and their ilk are long forgotten.
I think this performance is Johnny Cash at his absolute best.
This is a beautiful and thoughtful arrangement. It's a cover, but not an attempt to pretend he's the original.
For the first time ever, I get Johnny... He could be me, but with a voice and talent... He just tells it.. It's everyman's story, and song. Rhythmic and timeless.
This is the best version of this song on youtube
Check out Johnny Mar's version, better again IMHO
It's tough company Cash has at least one other version, Clapton has at least two and counting . Odetta, Elvis and others , noto speak of various instances of them with Dylan.
I have been looking for this for years.
I love how Cash, a country man, takes Dylan's city-boy lyrics and tweaks them to his liking.
From "babe" to "gal".
That's how folktales are passed down!
Dylan uses "gal" in one of the last verses
Dylan ain't no city boy
Austin Lyle He is though.
he was not a city boy.. he was working at a logging camp in the north woods at the time... he didn't write that stuff because he was a rock and roll star... he got there the hard way, brother.. still.. more than likely

I was born very late but I didn't think twice to idolize him and his great compositions .
I really love dylan, and the entire tape he has with this song...but boy does Johnny make me wanna cry
People like you embody everything that's wrong in this world.

This is incredible. I am a big fan of the Dylan and Jerry Reed versions, but this is like the middle point between them. I'm sure this was the version Jerry knew first.

THis Great song is nicely done By Johnny Cash.GARYV,
wait wait wait where's the full footage? iconic Cash right here!
Yeah... he definitely wrote a lot of what he sang, and lots of poetry that wasn't released until his death. He's a phenomenal writer.
He didn't write it.
Lordy, don't you recognize Dylan?
yes he did he wrought over a 1,000 songs and he sang all of those and more
he,s such a legand that the the wind came to HIM.....
